He became the first Cougar to record 15+ rebounds in a game since Drick Bernstine, vs. Bethune-Cookman, Dec. 22, 2017. He became the first Coug since 1994 to grab 14+ rebounds in back-to-back games after nabbing 14 against Prairie View A&M. In addition, the Cougs are one of the most diverse teams in the country with players from 11 different states or countries. The seven international players is tied for the third most in the country while the seven different countries, only trailing Maine (11) and Cal Baptist (8). PACIFIC NORTHWEST PERFECTION Midway into his second season at WSU, head coach Kyle Smith has proven dominant against regional rivals as the Cougs are perfect in the Pacific Northwest at 12-0. In 2020-21, the Cougs have defeated Eastern Washington, Oregon State, Idaho, Portland State, and Montana State to keep their record perfect. Last season the Cougs reigned supreme in the Pacific Northwest sweeping UW, Oregon, and Oregon State in Pac-12 play while beating. Seattle, Idaho, and Idaho State for good measure in non-conference play. In addition, WSU beat Eastern Washington and Montana in closed scrimmages prior to the start of the regular season.

HOME SWEET HOME In a new era under head coach Kyle Smith, the Cougs have made the most of their time at home going 8-1 to start the year at Beasley Coliseum with their lone loss coming in double-overtime to Arizona. Last year, WSU was 12-5 in home games (11 at Beasley Coliseum). The 12 wins tied for the most in a single season in the past 20 years since winning 12 in 2006-07. The big difference this season is turnover margin WSU is -0.8 at home and just -7.0 on the road. Additionally, the Cougs scored nearly 5 points more per game at home while allowing 7 points more per game on the road.

COMEBACK COUGS In four-straight games to start the year the Cougs erased half-time deficits (3 vs TSU, 6 vs EWU, 3 vs OSU, 6 vs UI). Last season the Cougs were just 3-11 in games when trailing at half with their biggest comeback coming against UCLA, winning in OT after trailing by 7 at the break. In addition to halftime comebacks, the Cougs overcame three-straight double-digit deficits including a 13-point deficit against the EWU which was the biggest comeback since erasing a 20-point deficit against Saint Joseph’s on 11/23/17. Against Oregon State, the Cougs trailed by 10 with 14:24 to play in the game. Against Idaho, WSU trailed by 11 with 4:51 to play in the first half. The three double-digit comebacks is the most consecutive double-digit comebacks for the Cougs in the three-point era. Last year the Cougs overcame just one double-digit deficit. The Cougs also snapped a 16-game winless streak in the Coach Smith era when trailing with five minutes to play in the game as EWU held a slim one-point advantage at the five minute mark before WSU took its first lead of the game with 4:48 to play, never to trail again. WSU nearly pulled off another double-digit comeback at Stanford trailing by double-digits at the break before taking the lead late in the second half only to run out of gas in the final minutes. ______ABOGIDI NAMED PAC-12 FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK Washington State Men’s Basketball freshman Efe Abogidi was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 27, the conference office announced Monday. Abogidi became the first Cougar to earn the freshman award since the honor was established prior to the 2019-20 season. He is the first Coug to earn a conference weekly honor in 2020-21 and first since CJ Elleby was named Pac-12 Player of the Week Feb. 9, 2020. In addition to becoming the first Coug to earn the freshman award, Abogidi became the first freshman to earn a weekly award since Mark Hendrickson earned player of the week honors on Feb. 8, 1993.

The 90 pts vs the Panthers was the first 90-pt performance for WSU since scoring 91 at Arizona State, 2/7/19. WSU’s scored 80+ points six times in 2019-20. His 15.3 points per game ranks fifth among returning players this season in the conference. In addition to his scoring Bonton lead the Cougs in assists at 4.0 per game, ranking ninth in the conference. Playing on the biggest stage in front of the legend Klay Thompson, Bonton dropped a team season-best 34 points while adding eight rebounds and eight assists becoming the first Pac-12 player to go 30-8-8 since 1997 when STATS began its database. Bonton did his damage from all around the court but was nails from the line in Pac-12 play setting a program record for free throw excellence at 88.6% (62-70) breaking David Sanders’ 1988 record of 88.3% (53-60).

COUGS IN SEARCH OF SCORING With the new year comes new challenges as a young Cougar squad looks to find its way after having to replace seven letterwinners and three starters from a season ago. WASHINGTON STATE IN TRUE ROAD OPENERS The Cougs improved to 58-45 all-time record in road openers since the 1916-17 season with the win at Cal. KOULIBALY OUT INDEFINITELY Freshman point guard Jefferson Koulibaly’s debut will have to wait as the Canadian ball-handler suffered an arm injury that will sideline him indefinitely. Koulibaly was the Province Player of the Year and All- Canadian Player of the Year after leading the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association in scoring at 27.9 points while also averaging 10.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.5 steals per game as a senior.

ELLEBY GOES 46TH TO PORTLAND With the 46th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, the Portland Trailblazers selected Washington State men’s basketball standout CJ Elleby. Elleby becomes the first under-classman in Cougar basketball history to be selected in the NBA Draft and the first WSU player selected in the draft since all-time great Klay Thompson was picked No. 11 overall in 2011. Overall, Elleby ended his two-year career at WSU 32nd all-time in scoring while averaging 16.6 ppg, the fifth-best scoring average in Coug history. From behind the arc, Elleby finished his career 18th overall with 127 made three-pointers while hitting at a 41.4% clip, the fifth-best shooting percentage in program history. Defensively, Elleby ended his second year just inside the top-20 for career steals, grabbing 89 in just 64 games to average 1.4 per contest, a mark which put him 13th on the Cougs’ all-time average list.
