March 2021 u Four Sweet 16 teams - equaling the most-ever for the Conference (1997, 1998, 2001) - with a combined 9-1 record and eight wins by double digits through the first two rounds. u Three Elite Eight teams - matching the most-ever for the Conference (2001) - with a combined 12-2 record through the first three rounds. u UCLA advancing from the First Four to the Final Four - only the second Final Four appearance for a Conference program during the Pac-12 era (since 2012) - and pushing No. 1 overall seed Gonzaga to overtime in one of the most memorable games in NCAA Tournament history. Thanks to the efficient performances of its five NCAA Tournament participants, the Pac-12 (+16.21) finished the 2020-21 season at No. 3 in the KenPom.com conference rankings behind only the Big Ten (+18.68) and Big 12 (+16.55). 3 u It marked the highest ranking and rating for the Conference since finishing No. 1 in 2008-09 (+16.15) and 2007-08 (+16.86). Five Pac-12 programs earned top-25 rankings in the final post-NCAA Tournament USA TODAY Coaches poll - No. 7 UCLA, No. 9 USC, No. 17 OREGON, No. 20 0REGON STATE and No. 23 COLORADO. 5 u The five ranked teams are the most ever for the Conference in an NCAA-recognized final national poll (AP 1949-present, pre-NCAA Tournament poll; USA Today Coaches 1994-present, post-NCAA Tournament poll). In the 2021 NCAA Tournament, Pac-12 programs combined for: u Six upsets (team seeded five spots lower than opponent) 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 u Seven victories over Associated Press Top 25 teams u Eight wins by teams seeded lower than opponent u Nine wins over Power Conference opponents (inclusive of USC/Oregon), the most ever for the Conference in a single NCAA Tournament u 10 victories by double digits Pac-12 programs combined for a national-best 13-5 record* (.722 win%) in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. *OREGON was advanced past the First Round via No Contest vs. VCU. 13-5 u The 13 wins tied for the most for the Conference in a single NCAA Tournament (2001). 2021 NCAA TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE & RESULTS FIRST FOUR REGIONAL SEMIFINALS Thurs., March 18 11-UCLA 86, 11-Michigan State 80 (OT) Sat., March 27 12-OREGON STATE 65, 8-#17 Loyola Chicago 58 Sun., March 28 11-UCLA 88, 2-#5 Alabama 78 (OT) FIRST ROUND Sun., March 28 6-#24 USC 82, 7-OREGON 68 Fri., March 19 12-OREGON STATE 70, 5-Tennessee 56 Sat., March 20 5-#22 COLORADO 96, 12-Georgetown 73 REGIONAL FINALS Sat., March 20 6-#24 USC 72, 11-Drake 56 Mon., March 29 2-#6 Houston 67, 12-OREGON STATE 61 Sat., March 20 11-UCLA 73, 6-#23 BYU 62 Tues., March 30 1-#1 Gonzaga 85, 6-#24 USC 66 Sat., March 20 7-OREGON vs. 10-VCU - No Contest Tues., March 30 11-UCLA 51, 1-#4 Michigan 49 SECOND ROUND FINAL FOUR Sun., March 21 12-OREGON STATE 80, 4-#11 Oklahoma State 70 Sat., April 3 1-#1 Gonzaga 93, 11-UCLA 90 (OT) Mon., March 22 7-OREGON 95, 2-#8 Iowa 80 Rankings listed are AP poll Mon., March 22 11-UCLA 67, 14-Abilene Christian 47 Mon., March 22 4-#14 Florida State 71, 5-#22 COLORADO 53 Mon., March 22 6-#24 USC 85, 3-#12 Kansas 51 OFFICIAL BRACKET PRESENTED BY 20162021 DIVISION NCAA I MEN’S DIVISION I MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FIRST ROUND SECOND ROUND SWEET 16 ELITE 8® NATIONAL SEMIFINALS NATIONAL SEMIFINALS ELITE 8® SWEET 16 SECOND ROUND FIRST ROUND MARCH 20 MARCH 22 MARCH 28 MARCH 30 APRIL 3 APRIL 3 MARCH 29 MARCH 27 MARCH 21 MARCH 19 FIRST FOUR® 16 Norfolk St. (16-7) 54 11 Wichita St. (16-5) 52 52 Mt. By Joe Kaiser ESPN Smith had a great 2011 -12, but he is an unrestricted free agent after this season. It took Danny Ferry exactly seven days in his new role as the Atlanta Hawks' president of basketball operations and general manager to completely change the face of the franchise. His ability to swiftly orchestrate separate deals to part with high-priced veterans Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams signaled a commitment to rebuilding and shed as much as $77 million still owed to the two veterans beyond next season. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months to today, and Ferry's rebuilt roster has only a handful of contracts that go beyond the 2012-13 season: • Al Horford : Signed through 2015-16. • Lou Williams : Signed through 2013-14. • John Jenkins : 2012 first-round pick. • Mike Scott : 2012 second-round pick. • Jeff Teague : Due to become a restricted free agent at season's end, barring an extension. Notice one big name we didn't mention: Josh Smith . The tantalizingly talented, yet often frustrating, forward is among the many Hawks entering the final year of their deals, and he represents arguably the biggest challenge for Ferry to date: what to do with Smith. If handled correctly, this could be the next step toward eventually turning the Hawks into a perennial playoff contender. Mishandled, and this could undo everything good that came out of the trades of Johnson and Williams. So the question is, what's the smarter move for Ferry and the Hawks? a) Negotiate an extension that will keep Smith in Atlanta for the long term.
