Dear Friends, As I sit down to write this letter I am still in awe with the success of our Summer Intensive Program. I know we beg for volunteers A LOT but to make things run smoothly and efficiently it takes many hands. As the saying goes "many hands make light work". I would like to take this time to thank all of our volunteers who give of their time so effortlessly.

One of the biggest events we have for our youth in our parish is Summer Intensive PREP (Parish Religious Educa- tion Program). Every summer we have a two-week program where the youth of our parish are taught their grade level religion. This program consists of 35 hours of class time, music and art. All geared to teach the love of God. I know some of you may be shaking your heads and saying…. How can a child learn all there is to learn about their religion in just two weeks. Believe me, I was skeptical also at first but the more I do it the more I love this program. Most of the children love coming and thoroughly enjoy being here. They WANT to come. They have no other commitments. No other classes taking up space in their brain. No extracurricular activities taking precedence over their religion classes.

With all that being said it is also an intense program on the teachers, aides, and other volunteers to keep this pro- gram running smoothly. All teachers not only voluntarily give up two weeks of their time to come and teach but also need to keep these children engaged on a beautiful summer day. I do not believe these teachers know how much of an impact they have on these children’s lives. It might not show in the classroom when the kids are acting up but the kids will remember them for the rest of their lives. At some point in their lives, they will remember that wonderful PREP teacher who was so filled with the Holy Spirit and the love of God they gave up their time to teach them. And hopefully will say, I want to be filled with the love of God and share it just like they did. Maybe not all in the classroom but in everyday life.

Besides the teachers these two weeks would not have been possible without our support volunteers; our aide and snack team. Our aide would tirelessly run up and down the steps, here and there, getting whatever was needed. As for the snack team, I cannot express how wonderful it was to have someone running the kitchen for me this year. This group of volunteers took over the snack duties for me so I could continue to assist the teachers and students with their needs.

Together we made these two weeks the best they could be and I thank every one of you from the bottom of my heart!

Question: What is the Sanctuary Lamp? Answer: A sanctuary lamp, chancel lamp, lamp, everlasting light, or eternal flame is a light that shines before the altar of sanctuaries in many Jewish places of worship. Prescribed in Exodus 27:20-21 of the Torah, this icon has taken on different meanings in each of the religions that have adopted it. The passage, which refers to prescriptions for the tabernacle, states: “And thou shalt command the children of Israel, that they bring thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamp to burn always”. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal in the , for instance, states (in 316): "In accordance with traditional custom, near the tabernacle a special lamp, fueled by oil or wax, should be kept alight to indicate and honor the pres- ence of Christ." The sanctuary lamp, also called a chancel lamp, is placed before the tabernacle or aumbry in Roman Catho- lic churches as a sign that the Lord is present, Old Catholic, and Anglican churches as a sign that the Blessed Sacra- ment is reserved or stored. It is also found in the chancel of Lutheran and Methodist churches to indicate the presence of Christ in the sanctuary, as well as a belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The sanctuary lamp may also be seen in Eastern Orthodox Churches. Other Christian denominations burn the lamp to show that the light of Christ always burns in a sin-darkened world. With influence from in the Old Testament, God told Moses that a lamp filled with the pure oil should perpetually burn in the Tabernacle (Ex 27:20-21). This is the precedent for the Catholic Church's custom of burning a candle (at all times) before the tabernacle – the gold house where the Eucharistic Body of Christ is reserved under lock and key. In Jewish practice, this Altar lamp is known for its Hebrew name, ner tamid. Such sanctuary or tabernacle lamps are often colored red, though this is not prescribed by law. This serves to distin- guish this light from other votive lights within the church. In the Catholic Church, red is widely used despite the preference for white expressed by Fortescue. The use of multiple lights, always in odd numbers, i.e., three, five, seven, or more, in place of a single lamp has now become rarer, though it is still seen in some older Catholic churches and in eastern Christian churches. The lamp may be suspended by a rope or chain over the tabernacle or near the entry of the sanctuary, or it may be affixed to a wall; it is also sometimes placed on a ledge beside the tabernacle or on an individual stand placed on the floor, as seen in the image of St. Martin's church, Kortrijk, Belgium, in the article . Oil lamps or candles may be used. 7- 650 Parish Catechetical Team Page
