I still have my reservations; I understand the principle but the current economic situation is going to produce some real challenges and now is not necessarily the time to extend ourselves and effectively mortgage the future of Babergh. Planning is gaining momentum as the developers seek to take advantage of the situation. Government is confusing the issue with another consultation on the future, designed to ‘speed up the process of gaining planning permission’! That seems strange when Babergh has some 6,000 permissions approved, but not started, and an annual target (set by government) of some 600 homes per year and yet more and more are being applied for every day, mostly in the villages. Development of office complexes with multiple offices in one location seem to be intended to cater for the change from commuting to big London offices to a combination of home working and local hubs. The trouble is there is no attempt to improve the infrastructure, buses, health care, water, broadband etc, and the government’s £50 cycle vouchers will only work if the ground is flat and it’s sunny every day!
