  • GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA Highlights
GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA Highlights Glenn Miller was born on March 1, 1904, in Clarinda, Iowa. Glenn Miller originally wrote the music for Moonlight Serenade (later to become his theme song) as an exercise when he was studying with noted arranger, Joseph Schilinger. The first Glenn Miller Orchestra, formed in 1937, was a financial failure. In March 1938, Glenn Miller launched his second band, and unlike the first band, it became an enormous success with multiple hit records and huge box office sales. At the height of the orchestra’s popularity, Glenn Miller disbanded his musical organization in 1942 to volunteer for the army. He then organized the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. On December 15, 1944, Major Glenn Miller took off in a single engine plane from England – against his better judgment – to precede his band to France, never to be seen again. The army officially declared him dead one year later. Due to popular demand, the Miller Estate authorized the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956. In 1941, Glenn Miller and His Orchestra had more hit records in one year, including A String of Pearls, than anybody in the history of the recording industry. Although other songs had sold over a million record copies, in 1941 Glenn Miller’s recording of Chattanooga Choo Choo received the first Gold Record ever to be awarded. The Glenn Miller Orchestra has been “on the road” longer and more continuously than any other Big Band ever. The Glenn Miller Orchestra travels over 100,000 miles each year, playing nearly 300 dates.

  • GLENN MILLER (1904 – 1944) Miller Was an American Jazz Musician
GLENN MILLER (1904 – 1944) Miller was an American jazz musician (trombone), arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was one of the best-selling recording artists from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best known Big Bands. While he was traveling to entertain U.S. troops in France during World War II, Glenn Miller disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel. He was born in Iowa. His parents soon moved their family from Iowa first to Nebraska, then to Missouri, and eventually, to Fort Morgan, Colorado. In each of these new cities, Miller's musical development took a new step. During his family's stay in Nebraska, Miller's father brought him a mandolin, which the boy soon traded for an old horn. While in Missouri, he first started playing the trombone as a member of a town band. When his family moved to Fort Morgan in 1918, Miller nourished his musical talents by joining his high school band. He formed his own band and found success in 1938. Glenn Miller and his orchestra enjoyed amazing popularity and commercial success. The Glenn Miller Orchestra recorded more than 60 top hits. Glenn Miller's Orchestra attained its popularity because of the band's unique style and sound. Miller himself claimed, "A band ought to have a sound all of its own. It ought to have a personality." Indeed, Miller's orchestra distinguished itself from other big bands in many ways. While jazz music is characterized by its spontaneity and use of improvisation, The Glenn Miller Orchestra played swing music, an offshoot of jazz that favors orchestration rather than improvisation.

MARCH 8 The classic sounds of Moonlight Serenade will fill the Price Center at the University of California, San Diego when the Glenn Miller Orchestra performs March 8 beginning at 8 p.m. The most sought after Big Band in the world, constantly on the road, the Glenn Miller Orchestra returns to UCSD after two years, and now, as then, invites easy listening, and better yet, dancing in the Price Center Ballroom. Trombonist Larry O'Brien directs the 19-member band including five saxophone players, four trumpeters, four trombonists, three rhythm musicians (piano, bass and drums) and two vocalists. The results original Glenn Miller arrangements, as well as modern selections, many of them in the big-band style. "Mostly we play the old songs," says O'Brien. "We manage to insert new ones from time to time, but these are songs that lend themselves to the Miller sound." In addition to Miller's theme song, Moonlight Serenade, originally written by the musician as an exercise for a course in arranging long before he organized his band in 1938, golden oldies include Stardust, Rhapsody in Blue, A String of Pearls, Tangerine, The Nearness of You, Come Rain or Come Shine, Begin the Beguine and Chattanooga Choo Choo.

  • Glenn Miller's
n Dec. 15, 1944, it had been raining in Eng- land for three days. The regular military shuttle Oflights to France were canceled. Maj. Glenn Miller waited impatiently, eager Glenn Miller’s to get to Paris to make arrangements for a Christmas performance by his Army Air Forces band. Air Force Odyssey When the opportunity arose to hitch a ride across the English Channel on a small single-engine airplane, he leapt at it. The aircraft was a UC-64 Noorduyn Norseman, the military version of a Canadian bush plane. Miller did not fully understand the risk he was tak- ing, nor did he know that the pilot was exceeding his clearance, which was for local flying only. The airplane took off into the fog from a field north of London at 1:55 p.m. and disappeared into history. For a while, there was hope that it might have landed somewhere, but it did not turn up. Eighth Air Force officially declared the aircraft missing and made a public announcement on Christmas Eve. Glenn Miller was at the peak of his fame. He had been the most popular bandleader in America before he joined the Army in 1942. In 1940 alone, his records sold almost three million copies and he had 31 hits in the Top 10 that year. His AAF band, formed in 1943, was an all-star team. Miller had his pick of top musicians who had been drafted into the armed forces. He was able to pull in several former members of his own band and others who had played with Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw.

  • Glenn Miller 1941 “Keep ‘Em Flying” America’S Number One Band
GLENN MILLER 1941 “KEEP ‘EM FLYING” AMERICA’S NUMBER ONE BAND Dedicated to the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society June 2021 Prepared by: Dennis M. Spragg Glenn Miller Archives Glenn Miller and his Orchestra, Cafe Rouge, January 1941 A Pivotal Year 1941 was a pivotal year in the history of the United States and for America’s number one bandleader, Glenn Miller. As of January 1, all ASCAP-licensed music (most popular music) was off the air. Glenn broadcast with a replacement BMI-licensed theme, “Slumber Song.” On January 17, the band recorded the classic “Song of the Volga Boatmen,” Bill Finegan’s traditional music response to Jerry Gray’s treatment of “Anvil Chorus.” If not for the broadcasting industry vs. ASCAP dispute, these two all-time Miller hits might never have been written or performed. Further changes arrived to shake up the successful Miller musical organization. A gossip columnist ran a story about Marion Hutton’s pregnancy, which pushed her to stop performing sooner than anticipated. By January 1941, Marion was only appearing on Glenn’s “Chesterfield Moonlight Serenade” broadcasts and not at the Café Rouge. Miller had to replace her. A young “dimpled darling” named Dorothy Claire from LaPorte, Indiana was singing for bandleader Bobby Byrne. Dorothy was under contract for three years with Byrne. So when Bobby learned that Glenn Miller intended to hire Ms. Claire, he promptly sued Miller for $25,000. However, Claire joined the Miller band on January 8. Glenn offered her a salary of $250 per week, a significant raise from the $75 per week she earned with Byrne.

Landmarks Preservation Commission March 18, 2008, Designation List 402 LP-2273 WEBSTER HALL and ANNEX, 119-125 East 11th Street, Manhattan. Built 1886-87 and 1892; Charles Rentz, Jr., architect. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 556, Lot 68. On October 30, 2007, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of Webster Hall and Annex and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 9). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Seven people spoke in favor of designation, including City Councilmember Rosie Mendez and representatives of the building’s lessee, Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick, the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, Historic Districts Council, Metropolitan Chapter of the Victorian Society in America, and New York Landmarks Conservancy. Two representatives of the building’s owner opposed designation. In addition, the Commission received a number of communications in support of designation, including letters from City Councilmember Tony Avella, Manhattan Community Board 3, the Friends of Terra Cotta, and City Lore: The New York Center for Urban Folk Culture. Summary One of New York City’s most historically and culturally significant large nineteenth-century assembly halls, Webster Hall was constructed for Charles Goldstein in 1886-87, with an eastern Annex in 1892, to the designs of architect Charles Rentz, Jr. The Queen Anne style original structure and Renaissance Revival style Annex are clad in red Philadelphia pressed brick with brownstone trim, and effusively ornamented with unglazed red terra cotta, that on the original building was likely produced by the Boston Terra Cotta Co.
