The Record, which commences on 12th June 1630, is awanting from 31st October 1634 to 21st March 1666, from 14th May 1670 to 4th January 1676, and from 9th June i68i-to 7th October 1713. The Editor, as is common in all Indexes to Highland Records, has met with the difficulty of indexing the Gaelic Patronymics. As it has been felt impossible to devise any principle upon which to arrange these, they are given in chronological order at the end of the alphabetical list.     THE HERALDRY OF THE MACLEAYS AND THEIR KIN: THE ARMS OF WILLIAM MACLEAY, HIS SONS, AND THEIR MALE DESCENDANTS Stephen Michael Szabo Heraldic Consultant, Sydney INTRODUCTION In an earlier article1 I gave a brief account of the life of Alexander Macleay following his arrival in Sydney in 1826 and up to his death twenty-two years later. I noted that there had been little or no scholarly examination of the use of coats of arms and similar heraldic identifiers by Alexander Macleay and his kin by either blood or marriage, and ventured that such an examination, which I hoped to carry out, might reveal something about identity, aspiration and kinship in the Scottish diaspora in colonial New South Wales. The present article narrows its focus to look at the ancestry of Alexander Macleay, how his father acquired legitimately granted arms, and what use of these arms was made by various male family members to declare their social status. ANCESTRY The Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) tells us that Alexander Macleay was: the son of William Macleay, provost of Wick and deputy-lieutenant of Caithness.     FURNITURE MAKERS IN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY ABERDEEN: AN INTRODUCTION Janet Brinsden i. ‘View of New Aberdeen’ by William Mosman, cl 700-71 Courtesy Aberdeen City Art Gallery In August 1773 Samuel Johnson and James Boswell arrived in Aberdeen on their tour of northern Scotland and the Western Isles. In his account of the visit, ‘as Scotland is little known to the greater part of those who may read these observations’, Johnson considered it necessary to describe the city ‘with the solemnity of geographical description, as if we had been cast upon a newly-discovered coast’1. In furniture history terms Aberdeen remains ‘a newly-discovered coast’. The Trinity Hall Chairs2, the collection of sixteenth to early eighteenth century chairs held by the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen in their headquarters at Trinity Hall, and the work of the woodcarver John Fendour3 have been the subject of previous academic study, but little research has been done into the furniture makers who served the domestic needs of Aberdonians. In the eighteenth century, Aberdeen, like Edinburgh, had begun to break out of its old mediaeval plan; new streets were being laid out with new ‘flatted dwelling houses’ and town houses built on them. An exhibition by Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums in 19 804 examining the cultural scene in eighteenth century Aberdeen commented on domestic interiors, but the craftsmen who ‘plenished’ them, unlike their Edinburgh contemporaries, have remained anonymous. This article represents the beginning of a project to record Aberdeen’s anonymous furniture makers over the period 1660-1840 and to provide a foundation upon which further study of Aberdeen as a furniture-making centre can be built.

Rose family taken in 1917. We had never seen this photo before and were thrilled because we had not seen a photo of most of the family together at one time. My mother is the little girl to the right in the photo. “We can only speculate that the photo was taken on the occasion of Francis Howard Rose being home on furlough as a Baptist missionary to the Philippine Islands. Dr. Rose and his wife, Gertrude Coombs Rose, spent much of their lives as missionaries to the Philippines.

We originally became interested in the union of 1707, and the vast quantity of pamphlets and other printed materials which that union and its subsequent history provoked. Even a superficial examination revealed numerous works in almost every major repository in the United States and in Great Britain; there had never been a bibliographical survey of such works and much confusion existed in contemporary as well as in later histories as to their number and content. Since some major and many more minor figures contributed writings to the Anglo-Scottish debate, both the literary and the political historian face controversy and disagreement in handling Daniel Defoe, Charles Leslie, An• drew Fletcher, George Ridpath, James Hodges, and others. Basically, this checklist attempts to do nothing more than to clear a path for the historian who seeks to write a history of the union in any or all of its many aspects, and to facilitate the study of such men as Defoe and Ridpath.

WILLIAM RosE of Montcoffer, though a well-known man in his own day, was in no sense a historical character. He was the hard-working Factor or Agent for a County magnate in Scotland 150 years ago ; he was also, in his leisure moments, an industrious genealogist and anti­ quary, and left behind _him a vast mass of material in MS., some of which was sold by his sons, but the major part was carefully preserved. He had twelve children, and he kept nearly all the letters he received, both those on business and those purely personal. From this collection it has been possible to evolve a vivid picture of life in Scotland in the 18th Century, which always has an interest of its own. For the possession of these letters the present editors have, for the second time, to record their grate£ ul thanks to the late Mr. Edward Gordon-Duff, who presented to them the whole collection of '' Rose Papers,'' so curiously preserved in Banff ever since William Rose's death, and bought by Mr. Gordon-Duff c1:bout 30 years ago.
