Double and other multiple concertos were quite common in the High Baroque, including lots of examples by Vivaldi and, under his influence, Bach, but the solo concerto dominates the Classical period and beyond, with relatively few notable exceptions—Mozart’s two-piano concerto and sinfonias concertante, Beethoven’s Triple, Brahms’s Double—remaining solidly in today’s orchestral repertoire. This concert’s variety of approaches has as its chronological and stylistic extremes Michael Tippett’s 1939 GER Concerto for Double String Orchestra—one of the composer’s first works of significance— N and the brand-new, up-to-the-moment world premiere of the Double Concerto for Baritone GRAI Saxophone, Percussion, and Orchestra written for BMOP by Pittsburgh-based Mathew CLIVE Rosenblum. -

The winners were selected by a committee of Academy members: Robert Beaser (chairman), Martin Bresnick, John Corigliano, Mario Davidovsky, and Shulamit Ran. The awards will be presented at the Academy's annual Ceremonial in May. Candidates for music awards are nominated by the 250 members of the Academy. Academy Awards in Music Four composers will each receive a $7500 Academy Award in Music, which honors outstanding artistic achievement and acknowledges the composer who has arrived at his or her own voice. Each will receive an additional $7500 toward the recording of one work. The winners are David Gompper, David Lang, Andrew Waggoner, and Barbara White. Benjamin H. Danks Award The Benjamin H. Danks award of $20,000 is given to a composer of ensemble works. This year the award will go to Sean Shepherd. Goddard Lieberson Fellowships Two Goddard Lieberson fellowships of $15,000, endowed in 1978 by the CBS Foundation, are given to mid-career composers of exceptional gifts. This year they will go to Laura Elise Schwendinger and Kurt Stallmann. Walter Hinrichsen Award Victoria Bond will receive the Walter Hinrichsen Award for the publication of a work by a gifted composer. -

SFCMP features the work of iconic and William Winant, percussion emerging composers while shining a spotlight on California artists. Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean. -

Augusta Read Thomas
Augusta Read Thomas (born 1964) began composing as a child, and in the course of four decades has become one of the most admired and feted of her generation of American composers. She honed her craft through studies at Northwestern University, Yale University, and the Royal Academy of Music in London, working with composer-teachers such as William Karlins, Alan Stout, and Jacob Druckman. In July 1990 she came to the attention of New York Philharmonic audiences when the Orchestra gave the world premiere of Wind Dance, composed the preceding year, on its Horizons series. Since then she has completed commissions for symphonic works from many leading orchestras in the United States and abroad, including the Cleveland Chamber Symphony Orchestra (Vigil in 1990), the National Symphony Orchestra (Air and Angels in 1992, Manifesto in 1995, and Galaxy Dances in 2003), the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra (Passions, 1998), the Berlin Philharmonic (Aurora, 1999), the Cleveland Orchestra (Song in Sorrow, for solo soprano, six additional solo female voices, orchestra, and chorus, 2000), the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Canticle Weaving for trombone and orchestra, 2002), Norddeutscher Rundfunk (Chanting to Paradise for soprano, chorus and orchestra, 2002), and the London Sinfonietta (Light the First Light of Evening, 2002). In 1997 she was named composer-in-residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a position she will occupy until 2006. In that capacity she has advised the orchestra on new repertoire and has worked closely with the ensemble in creating a number of her own compositions, including …Words of the Sea … (1996) and Orbital Beacons (1998), both of which were premiered under the direction of Pierre Boulez; Ceremonial, which Daniel Barenboim led in 2000; and, most recently, Tangle, which the Chicago Symphony unveiled last season under David Robertson.
