General. The Battle of Osan was the first engagement of the ~orean War involving American troops. It was fought by a battalion size force to delay the enemy's advance while its parent 'unit--the 24th Infantry Division--entered Korea through the port of Pusan and assembled around Taejon in early July 1950, soon after the beginning of North Korean Communist invasion of South Korea. The battle is of special interest because it illustrates the importance of fire effectiveness, unit training, reliable equipment, leadership, and military discipline. The holding action at Osan revealed many weak nesses in the equipment and personnel of the American Army of 1950 and in its uses of fire and maneuver in a delaying action. 2. Background. On 25 June 1950 (local time), the North Korean A~ (NKA) launched a surprise invasion of South Korea. When the forces of the Republic of Korea proved unable to contain this communist onslaught, the United States intervened under the auspices of the United Nations. In late June the 8th Army occupying Japan mobilized its four divisions and ordered the 24th Infantry Division to prepare to move by sea to Korea. At that time the chief American concern was to keep control of the port of Pusan in friendly hands as the harbor which was most suitable for 8th Army's entry into Korea. -

Guilmartin __________________ Professor William R. Childs Advisor Department of History ABSTRACT The atomic bomb created a new military dynamic for the world in 1945. The bomb, if used properly, could replace the artillery fires and air-delivered bombs used to defeat the concentrated force of an enemy. The weapon provided the U.S. with an unparalleled advantage over the rest of the world, until the Soviet Union developed its own bomb by 1949 and symmetry in warfare returned. Soon, theories of warfare changed to reflect the belief that the best way to avoid the effects of the bomb was through dispersion of forces. Eventually, the American Army reorganized its divisions from the traditional three-unit organization to a new five-unit organization, dubbed pentomic by its Chief of Staff, General Maxwell D. Taylor. While atomic weapons certainly had an effect on Taylor’s reasoning to adopt the pentomic organization, the idea was not new in 1956; the Army hierarchy had been wrestling with restructuring since the end of World War II. Though the Korean War derailed the Army’s plans for the early fifties, it returned to the forefront under the Eisenhower Administration. The driving force behind reorganization in 1952 was not ii only the reoriented and reduced defense budget, but also the Army’s inroads to the atomic club, formerly the domain of only the Air Force and the Navy. -

CHARACTERISATION OF EXPLOSIVE WEAPONS EXPLOSIVEEXPLOSIVE WEAPON EFFECTSWEAPON OVERVIEW EFFECTS FINAL REPORT ABOUT THE GICHD AND THE PROJECT The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) is an expert organisation working to reduce the impact of mines, cluster munitions and other explosive hazards, in close partnership with states, the UN and other human security actors. Based at the Maison de la paix in Geneva, the GICHD employs around 55 staff from over 15 countries with unique expertise and knowledge. Our work is made possible by core contributions, project funding and in-kind support from more than 20 governments and organisations. Motivated by its strategic goal to improve human security and equipped with subject expertise in explosive hazards, the GICHD launched a research project to characterise explosive weapons. The GICHD perceives the debate on explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA) as an important humanitarian issue. The aim of this research into explosive weapons characteristics and their immediate, destructive effects on humans and structures, is to help inform the ongoing discussions on EWIPA, intended to reduce harm to civilians. The intention of the research is not to discuss the moral, political or legal implications of using explosive weapon systems in populated areas, but to examine their characteristics, effects and use from a technical perspective. The research project started in January 2015 and was guided and advised by a group of 18 international experts dealing with weapons-related research and practitioners who address the implications of explosive weapons in the humanitarian, policy, advocacy and legal fields. This report and its annexes integrate the research efforts of the characterisation of explosive weapons (CEW) project in 2015-2016 and make reference to key information sources in this domain. -

The bazooka was the serendipitous conjunction of two new technologies: the shaped-charge antitank warhead and the shoulder-fired rocket launcher. This book looks at the development of this iconic weapon, and traces its combat use on the World War II battlefield. One of the widespread myths to have emerged about German tank design during World War II was the notion that German sideskirt armor was developed in response to the bazooka, and its British equivalent, the PIAT (Projector Infantry Antitank). American and British troops began encountering the new versions of German armored vehicles with extra armor shields in 1944, and so presumed that this new feature was in response to the Allied shaped-charge weapons. The shields received a variety of names including “bazooka shields,” “bazooka pants,” and “PIAT shields.” In reality, their development was not a response to Allied shaped-charge weapons, for most German innovations in tank technology during the war years were prompted by developments on the Eastern Front. This book examines the real story behind the bazooka shields. It also traces the many specialized devices developed by the Wehrmacht in World War II to deal with the threat of infantry close-attack weapons. A remarkable variety of curious devices was developed including a wood paste to defend against antitank charges, and a machine gun with a special curved barrel to allow armored vehicle crews to defend themselves from within the protective armor of their vehicle. -

Blitzkrieg World War Two Rules By Kevin White (Originally published in Lone Warrior 169) Introduction This is my attempt at a simple rule set for WW2. As well as the opposing forces you will need three six sided dice and a normal pack of playing cards with the Jokers removed. Long time members will be aware that I have a 1.5 inch grid superimposed on my table so just multiply by 1.5 for distances on a plain table. I suggest that when you throw for movement on a plain table you take the number of spots as the number of inches to be moved. Organisation Infantry battalions consist of 3 Rifle Companies (8 figures in each) plus a support company (MMG/HMG/Mortars/Light AT weapons such as panzerfaust, bazooka, PIAT, etc.), plus a HQ Company. Infantry companies (HQ, rifle and support companies) can sustain a total of eight damage points before being destroyed. An armoured regiment consists of 3 Squadrons (one tank model in each; i.e. 3 tanks). Command and control Make up one chit/card for each rifle company, tank squadron and artillery battery. Add one blank chit or card marked STOP. When a unit’s chit/card is turned up it can move, manoeuvre or fire in whatever order the commander wishes. When the Battalion HQ chit is turned up the whole battalion may move, fire or manoeuvre. S. OWEN-SMITH, M.S., F.R.C.S. Professor of Surgery, Royal Army Medical College THE war between the Arabs and Israelis in October 1973 resulted in the most extensive tank battles since World War n. Indeed in one area involved they were claimed to be the most extensive in Military history, exceeding the 1600 tanks deployed at El Alamein. In.association with these battles some 830 Israeli tanks and about 1400 Arab tanks were destroyed. The Israelis have recorded data on the wounded from this war in a number of articles and presentations. The most striking figure is that just under 10 per cent of all injured suffered burns. Virtually all these burns occurred in Armoured Fighting Vehicle (A.F.V.) crews. The problems I want to discuss are: a. Does the total incidence of burns from major tank battles create a definite departure from previous experiences and must we, therefore, include this figure in pre- planning for conflict in N.W.
