    Diocese of Gloucester The next Bishop of Gloucester’s Chaplain The Diocese of Gloucester Our diocese covers the county of Gloucestershire and parts of neighbouring counties. It runs from the Welsh border in the west to Lechlade in the east, and from beyond Chipping Campden in the north to Chipping Sodbury in the south. It is home to over 600,000 people and is served by some 327 parishes, 390 churches and 117 church schools. Mission and ministry in the Diocese of Gloucester is shaped by our ‘LIFE’ vision as we seek to share the transforming Gospel of Jesus Christ so that people may know life in all its fullness. The Culture and Values for ministry can be found here. The two bishops and the two archdeacons are based at 2 College Green. In addition to the chaplain, the bishops’ personal staff includes the Bishop of Tewkesbury’s chaplain/PA, the Bishop of Gloucester’s personal secretary and an additional part-time secretary. Bishop Rachel also has a driver. Bishop Rachel seeks to know and be known by her clergy and places a high value on engaging with communities across the diocese and building positive networks of relationship. The Bishop seeks to appoint a chaplain who is personally mature and liturgically literate; a meticulous planner who is excellent with both paper and people and has a heart for the Kingdom of God. For a church not yet 300 years old Christ Church Spitalfields has had a chequered history. The church lies just outside the boundary of the City of London in the Borough of Tower Hamlets, the Council of which is one of the Parties in this case. The church is situated to the east of Liverpool Street Station, and to the west of Brick Lane. To-day, it stands on the boundary between the expanding office blocks of the City, and the curry houses of the Muslim community of the Spitalfields/Bangla Town Ward of Tower Hamlets.

Could you tell me when and where you were born please? I was born in, on November the twenty-seventh 1927 in Elizabeth Street, which is just off Eaton Square, and I am a twin and I should have been born first but my twin sister, who sadly died - wonderful person – a few months ago, pushed me aside and I came out feet first, which is not where you do want to come out, but I think the gynaecologist we had – I was born actually in the house – was the same gynaecologist the Queen had.

    Introduction On behalf of the Trustees, I am pleased to present this, the fourth annual report of the Archbishops’ Council. In what proved to be another year of change, the Archbishops’ Council saw the largest renewal in its membership since it was established in 1999. We have been blessed since our establishment with people who are committed to serving God through their engagement with the Council and we give thanks for them. We are deeply grateful for the contributions of those members who have left and we are delighted to welcome the three new appointed members amongst our number. We are already benefiting from sharing our common task with them and learning from their experiences and insights. 2002 also saw the appointment of Rowan Williams as Archbishop of Canterbury following the retirement of Archbishop George Carey. Archbishop George’s commitment to the idea and aims of the Council was deep and he was instrumental in helping it to take shape. We thank God for his ministry and offer our prayers for a long, happy and active retirement. We look forward to sharing in Rowan’s ministry in this new stage of the Council’s life. In October, following Philip Mawer’s departure to take up his new post as Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, the Council was also pleased to welcome William Fittall as new Secretary General. In expressing our thanks to Philip for his indefatigable work with the Council from the beginning, we wish to assure William of our continued prayers and support in his task of helping us to shape the future of the Archbishops’ Council.
