ASPEN MOUNTAIN Master Development 2018 PlanDraft This is the final draft of the Aspen Mt Ski Area Master Development Plan submitted to the Forest Service by Aspen Skiing Company 1/8/2018. A publication quality document will be produced with final formatting and technical editing. II. DESIGN CRITERIA Establishing design criteria is an important component in mountain planning. Following is an overview of the basic design criteria upon which the Aspen Mountain MDP is based. A. DESTINATION RESORTS One common characteristic of destination resorts is that they cater to a significant vacation market and thus offer the types of services and amenities vacationers expect. At the same time, some components of the destination resort are designed specifically with the day-use guest in mind. Additionally, the employment, housing, and community services for both full-time and second-home residents created by destination resorts all encourage the development of a vital and balanced community. This interrelationship is helpful to the long-term success of the destination resort. Destination mountain resorts can be broadly defined by the visitation they attract, which is, in most instances, either regional or national/international. Within these categories are resorts that are purpose-built and others that are within, or adjacent to, existing communities. Aspen Mountain and the adjacent City of Aspen is an example of such a resort that exists adjacent to an existing community that is rich in cultural history, and provides a destination guest with a sense of the Mountain West and the mining and ski history of Colorado. This combination of a desirable setting and history supplements the overall experience of a guest visiting Aspen Mountain, which has become a regional, national, and international destination resort. -

The seasonal snowpacks at five ski centers in Central Slovakia were examined over the course of three winter seasons to identify and compare the seasonal development and inter-seasonal and spatial variability of depth average snow density of ski piste snow and uncompacted natural snow. The spatial variability in the ski piste snow density was analyzed in relation to the snow depth and snow lances at the Košútka ski center using GIS. A special snow tube for high-density snowpack sampling was developed (named the MM snow tube) and tested against the commonly used VS-43 snow tube. Measurements showed that the MM snow tube was constructed appropriately and had comparable precision. Significant differences in mean snow density were identified for the studied snow types. -

In addition to improvements that seasoned skiers and riders will enjoy, CSCUSA members are also offering a wide variety of guest enhancements and learning options that brand-new skiers and riders or those returning the sport after some time away will be excited about this winter. Many will debut enhanced or remodeled rental shops including clothing rental options. Below is a summary of the many resort improvements at CSCUSA ski areas for the 2019-20 ski season. Opening and closing dates for the 2019-20 season are at the bottom of this release. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area After completing a 468-acre terrain expansion into the Beavers and the Steep Gullies last season, including the new four-person Beavers chairlift, A-Basin is continuing to upgrade its facilities. 2019-20 will be the first full season of Il Rifugo, the highest lift-served restaurant in North America at just over 12,500 feet serving charcuterie boards, wine, espresso and stunning views of the Continental Divide. A-Basin will also have newly remodeled bathrooms in the basement of the main lodge. -

Chronology of Selected Ski Lifts Notes for 2001 Exhibit, New England Ski Museum Jeff Leich The following notes on ski lifts are intended to aid in the development of a Ski Museum exhibit. In many cases it is unclear from the sources referenced below exactly when a particular lift was installed or first operated. It is also probable that sources with data on certain early ski lifts was not located. It is therefore not possible to compare opening dates to determine which lift was "the first" of its kind to operate; rather, this chronology is intended to indicate the general sequence of the development of early ski lifts of the stated types. 1870 Eureka Mine ore tramway used to transport miners for skiing (Allen, 109, 203 note 22--Vallejo CA Sunday Times Herald, 12-13-1870). "For example, the ore bucket of the Plumas Eureka Mine at Johnsville (CA) was converted on Sundays into the world's first ski tow. It was operated by steam". (Gould, p 136 (ref to Vallejo CA Sunday Times Herald, 12-13-1870). 1896 Riblet Tramways Company of Spokane, WA begins designing mining tramways (Gilbert, p. 2). 1907 Sightseeing four-passenger gondola built in Silver Plume, CO; torn down for scrap metal about 1914 (Gilbert, p. 2). 1907 "Sled lifts had been employed on the slopes of Bodele in the Voralberg region of Austria as early as 1907" (Gilbert, p. 4). 1908 Haulback tows used in Europe as early as 1908 (Allen, 109, note 20 on pg 203, from patent application, March 16, 1908). 1910 "A tow to haul toboggans was ready for the Truckee CA carnival in 1910 and then was used later by skiers following the formation of the Truckee Ski Club in 1913".
