The console multiplexer cannot currently display Unicode characters. A terminal emulator that supports Unicode characters can be used if Unicode support is required.

Installation Notes and Issues iNEWS Client When installing or upgrading iNEWS on Windows XP, you must have adequate user rights to install the client software. Windows XP (1.5 and later versions only) Install as restricted user (will fail) - formerly called standard user on NT Install as standard user (Power User) (will work) Install as administrator (will work)

This is not a restriction in the iNEWS client install, but is a restriction of the Windows operating system in that it is upholding the security restrictions on the PC.

iNEWS Server Kernel version 2.4.21-37 (and 2.4.21-37smp) is now the latest qualified version of the Linux kernel. This kernel version is included with RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 ES Update 6.

5 Version 2.5.2 ReadMe

New Features in Release 2.5.2 This section provides information on any previously undocumented enhancements or new features added to this release. iNEWS FTP Server supports the cd .. command to traverse to root directory In previous versions of iNEWS, if users did not have read permission to the parent of a directory they were in, they could not use the cd .. command to traverse back up to the root directory. Beginning with this version, any user can traverse up the directory tree using cd .., even if he does not have read permission to that directory. To preserve security, the user will be unable to list contents in any directory for which he does not have read permission.

Option to disable fast protocol for Txnet links Beginning with version 2.5.2, a new joblist option has been added. The fast [yes|no] joblist command allows the fast protocol to be turned off. The default is fast yes if no option is specified.

By setting fast no the user can force txnet to use a separate socket connection for all data transfers. Normally, when txnet connects to an rxnet they agree to use the command socket connection for data transfers in addition to command exchanges. This option can help to resolve problems when connections have a router or firewall between them.

An environment variable was introduced for rxnet; RXNOFAST=1 causes rxnet to refuse attempts to use a fast connection. This can be set in the /site/env/rxnet file.

Hardware and Software Changes The following changes were made to iNEWS version 2.5.2.

User Interface

ActiveX Plug-ins Plug-in state not preserved from PC to PC. In previous versions of iNEWS, if a user would close the iNEWS client with an ActiveX plug-in open, he or she would get an error message when iNEWS attempts to automatically open that plug-in when logging in on a different computer (even though the plug-in is installed on that PC). This problem has been fixed. Plug-ins do not show up in Chinese Simplified and Traditional clients. In previous versions of 2.5, ActiveX plug-ins were not always showing up in the plug-ins menu. This problem has been fixed.

Local Printing Printing queue view with All Lines box checked for story preview only prints one line. In previous versions of iNEWS, if the All Lines box was checked to preview all lines in a story when printing the queue view, only the first line of the story would be printed. This problem has been fixed and all lines of the story are correctly printed now.

Show Timing Timing bar not updating correctly when Air-Date field not present. In previous versions of iNEWS, the show timing bar was not updating correctly if the Air-Date field was not present in the rundown. This problem has been fixed.

6 Version 2.5.2 ReadMe

Story Timing Unable to enter audio time using :00 in the Queue panel. In previous versions of iNEWS, :00 would not be accepted for audio times in the queue panel. This has been fixed.

System.Map Story Server incorrectly required a group to be entered in SYSTEM.MAP for users allowed to load monitor. The iNEWS Server was incorrectly requiring a group name to be entered in System.Map and only users in that group would be allowed to load monitor. This problem has been fixed and the ‘-‘ is once again valid, meaning anyone can load monitor.

Web Browser Web browser workspace steals focus when webpage is updated. In previous versions of iNEWS, the integrated Web browser would steal focus whenever a Web page was auto-updated. This problem has been fixed.

Server

Action Servers Polling server fails to order destination queue. In previous versions of iNEWS, it was possible to get the destination queue out of order from the source queue when using a polling action server. This problem has been fixed.

Console Commands Incorrect error message from keycheck program. The keycheck program was incorrectly reporting that the “Discard Changes” key had been redefined when using Ctrl+F5 for a macro. This problem has been fixed. Utraits clone option doesn’t get custom toolbars. In previous versions of iNEWS the clone option for the utraits command would not copy custom toolbars to the cloned user. This has been fixed.

FTP Server Default list size for FTP clients changed to 500 stories. The iNEWS FTP Server will now default to listing 500 stories instead of 300. The list size now lines up with the number of stories the monitor program can handle in a rundown.

System Options Incorrect syntax for excludedvideo example in /site/system. The excludedvideo option in /site/system was incorrectly shown as excluded_video in the example included in /site/system. The example has been fixed.

Miscellaneous RedHat updates break iNEWS commands. In previous versions of iNEWS 2.5, updating RedHat with patches could cause iNEWS commands to stop working. This was caused by the installation of RedHat packages running the ‘ldconfig’ command. This problem has been fixed.

Known Limitations This section provides information on known limitations that were not addressed in this release. Any available workaround procedures are also documented, when possible.

Note: For limitations related to compatibility of this release with previous versions/other products, see the section of this document entitled, “Compatibility Issues”.

Not Supported in iNEWS 2.5 PCUs are not supported. This includes support for System Printing and the MCT. Wire ingest must be configured through an Avid Data Receiver. MCS PCs are not supported. The SEP format is not supported for txnet. A sendpassword directive was added to replace the SEP format password element. See the iNEWS Server enhancements below for more information. Right-to-left text support (Arabic and Hebrew) is not yet supported. iNEWS Web Client is not yet supported.

Queue Panel Microsoft Sans Serif is not a recommended font for use in the Queue panel on a Chinese Simplified system

Story Body Certain English fonts will not display Chinese characters correctly In a mixed English/Chinese system, certain English fonts will not display Chinese characters correctly. Workaround: You can do what is called “font linking” to correct this problem. Go to the following Web site for details on how to link fonts. http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/getwr/steps/wrg_font.mspx Changing the Story Body font might not take effect in all stories This is only a temporary display problem. When you change the font in the story body, it is possible that not all stories will immediately start using that font. Workaround: Log out of iNEWS and re-login and all stories will begin using the correct font.

Local Printing Font limitation specific to Chinese Windows XP When using a Chinese Windows XP operating system, the Local Printing style must use a font that supports the Chinese character set. For example, the WinBodyFontFace style option must use a Chinese font in order to display Chinese and/or English characters. Selecting Tahoma or Arial, for example, will not work.

Miscellaneous Sentence and Title Casing o Users must put a space in between when transitioning between two languages. For example, a space must be placed after the last English character before transitioning to a Chinese character for casing to work correctly. o When transitioning from Chinese to English, a period and a space must be between the last Chinese character and the first English character for sentence casing to work correctly.
