From the Deputies The ‘T Element’ – Adding Breadth to the Depth of Knowledge This week, both of us attended a conference that included a keynote presentation from Associate Professor Alison Beavis, Deputy Dean of the UTS Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. This faculty has been credited as being at the leading edge of tertiary education models. Over the last 7 years they have developed and offered both diploma and bachelor degrees in technology, creative and innovative thinking that focus on developing future work skills.

These courses no longer have exams; instead the faculty is focusing on assessments that include problem- solving, projects and collaboration to develop real-world solutions. They are attracting highly capable students (average ATAR of 94), and whilst they are currently the smallest faculty, they have the largest amount of industry partnerships across a broad range of sectors. All of the learning experiences developed for the courses are underpinned by the ‘T element’.

The ‘T’ in ‘T element’ refers to a taking a trans-disciplinary approach to learning and problem-solving - an extension of multi- and intra-disciplinary approaches. As one can see in the diagram below, a trans- disciplinary approach involves a higher-level synthesis of knowledge and understanding. There is a strong recognition that, with future workplaces impacted by automated technology, increased global connection and career longevity; people will have to move not just across and between but BEYOND disciplines.

What Alison and her faculty present is an affirmation that a holistic, well rounded education is more relevant than ever for our young people to thrive in future workplaces. As educators, it is our role to encourage our students to engage and collaborate with others in the breadth of curricular and extra-curricular activities that we strive to offer at Manly Campus.

Year 11 English Report This week, 11ENAB2 have been working on a range of critical and creative activities to explore and represent the concept of coming-of-age, alongside the novel The Catcher in the Rye and the film Juno. Each student selected four tasks from a Pirozzo Matrix, which combines Bloom’s taxonomy (identify, understand, apply, analyse, create and Cam T and Alex L’s Mindcraft recreation of the carousel evaluate) with Gardner’s multiple intelligences in Central Park from Catcher in the Rye (verbal, mathematical, visual, kinaesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intrapersonal) to create a truly differentiated experience for students who can select activities based on interest and skill. Here is a taste of what they produced.

In Week 7, the Year 9 and 10 teams won Student Report both debates during an enjoyable competition against . The Year 11 and 12 teams were also successful in their debates against High School in Week 8. The Year 11 team successfully argued that ‘ should not subsidise print media’ and the Year 12 team presented a convincing case that ‘Australia should distance itself from the United States’.

Last term, we participated in the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge. Each team was given the task to create a mathematical model to help possible patients to decide which hospital is best for non-emergency situations, taking into account factors such as evitable mortality rate and travel time. We had great fun competing in this challenge over three days, and created the equation above, as well as a twenty-plus page report. Our team were one of 12 teams in the entire country to be chosen as National Finalists. We’d like to thank Ms. Munro and Mr Harris for all of their help in organising this great event, and hope to compete in this challenge next year.

P&C Financial Roles The P&C Treasurer and Canteen Financial Assistant role will become available at the end of this school year.

The P&C Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial position of the P&C. This includes preparing a budget, agreeing money owing and payable to the school, receiving and depositing money, authorising expenditure, reporting income and expenditure at P&C meetings, and preparing the year-end accounts. The Treasurer is an executive of the P&C. The role takes on average 1 hour per week.

The Canteen Payroll Officer manages the wages of the canteen staff. This includes setting up for authorisation the fortnightly wage payments, payments to the ATO, employee’s super funds and workers comp. Annual group statements need to be sent too. Basic accounting and MYOB knowledge is useful, but not critical. The role takes on average 30 minutes per week.

We would like to identify interested parents now so that an orderly handover of these roles can occur during the second half of this year.

These are great opportunities to help our wonderful school.

If you are interested in either role, please contact Paul Nuttall (P&C Treasurer) on 0403 960 002 or [email protected]
