A M ESSAGE FROM THE D EAN

Our Law School is blessed to be located in Hawai‘i, a uniquely beautiful gathering place that is also the crossroads of the Pacific and a vital link between the and Asia. We are unique in our diversity and in our face-to-face learning environment. At the same time, we have assembled a faculty recognized throughout the world for their stellar teaching, their first-rate scholarship, and their unparalleled commitment to public service within Hawai‘i as CONTENTS well as far beyond our beautiful shores. 1 A Message from the The last three years have been filled with exciting change and innovation at the Law Dean School. We boast of new programs and new people, finding significant new ways to carry out our obligation to assure access to a first-rate legal education and to advance the public good. Despite all the change, however, we remain committed to our 2 Faculty mission. And it is the leadership of our faculty members-- illustrated through their Accomplishments publications and service sampled in this Triannual Report -- that makes our Law School such an extraordinary learning community, increasingly known for excellence 16 Student around the world. Accomplishments

Our students are our core. They do many things to create an incomparably diverse, 19 Student Journals supportive, and enjoyable law school experience. We learn from and teach each other with sparkle and humor as well as with rigor. We do so within a close community, 26 Student Publications and we attend with remarkable success to the distinct human qualities that are crucial to the best of life and law. This Report lists but a few of the multiple accomplishments of our students. 27 Donors

The Report concludes with a wonderfully long list of those who have donated to the Law School. Their involvement and great generosity have been invaluable in making possible our exemplary teaching, learning, scholarship and service. We are extremely grateful to all who make it possible to be the kind of Law School we aspire to be.

35 Ke Kānāwai Māmalahoa , The Law of the Splintered Paddle: As a young warrior chief, Kamehameha the Great came upon commoners fishing along the shoreline. He attacked the fishermen, but during the struggle caught his foot in a lava crevice. One of the fleeing fishermen turned and broke a canoe paddle over the young chief’s head. The fisherman’s act reminded Kamehameha that human life was precious and deserved respect, and that it is wrong for the powerful to mistreat those who may be weaker. Years later when Kamehameha became ruler of Hawai‘i, he declared one of his first laws, (the law of the splintered paddle), which guaranteed the safety of the highways to all. This royal edict was law over the entire Hawaiian kingdom during the reign of Kamehameha the Great. Considered one of the most important (royal edicts), the law gave the Hawaiian people an era of freedom from violent assault. Artwork by Sanford Mock and original concept by Ruby Hamili (‘82) and Michael Moore (‘82).
