Grunow, Byrd Polar Research Center, Ohio State University INTRODUCTION Conglomerate throughout the Boston Basin in eastern Massachusetts (Fig. 1) has long been called after the Roxbury district of Boston (early references in Holmes, 1859 and Shaler, 1869) and subdivided into three members typified by strata in the encircling communities of Brookline, Dorchester and the Squantum section of Quincy, MA (Emerson, 1917). NEIGC field trips, beginning with one led by W.O. Crosby in 1905, and also GSA-related field trips have provided regular opportunities for generations of geologists to debate the depositional settings of all of these rocks, particularly the possible glacial origin of the Squantum "Tillite". It appears, however, that none of these outings has ever included a stop in Roxbury itself (Table I and lettered localities in Fig. 1). A main purpose of this trip will be to visit the nominal Roxbury type locality in a section of the historic quarries where recent re-development includes the newly opened Puddingstone Park. Other stops will permit comparison of type Roxbury Conglomerate with other rocks traditionally assigned to this formation and highlight geochronological and paleomagnetic data bearing on the ages of these units. Nearly Forty Years Ago, a Proposed but Ultimately Defeated Highway Project
A Jackson Square Timeline Late 1800s-1950s: Jackson Square is an important factory and brewing center with thousands of residents employed at the Plant Shoe Factory on Centre and Walden Streets, Chelmsford Ginger Ale Company on Heath Street, Moxie Bottling Company on Bickford Street and four other breweries or bottling plants within a few minutes‘ walk. The Boston and Providence Railroad had a Heath Street station and trolleys operated on Columbus Avenue and Centre Street. See JP Historical Society. Approximately 14,000 people lived in the three census tracts comprising Jackson Square, roughly 35% more than today. 1948: Mass. Dept. of Public Works calls for the construction of multiple highways to go through and around Boston. The proposal includes I-93 and I-90 (both of which were eventually built), as well as an ―Inner Belt‖ (looping from Charlestown through Somerville, Cambridge, Brookline, Roxbury and the South End) and the ―Southwest Expressway‖ (to connect the Inner Belt and I- 95, from Roxbury to Dedham). 1962: The proposed Southwest Expressway, originally aligned with Blue Hill Avenue, is realigned parallel to the Penn Central Railroad through Jamaica Plain, Roslindale and Hyde Park. The highway will be eight lanes wide. 1965: Community and church leaders in Jamaica Plain found ESAC to promote positive social change in the neighborhood. ESAC members are leaders in organizing against the highway. 1966: A ‗Beat the Belt‘ Rally brings together highway opponents from Cambridge, Roxbury, Chinatown, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park and suburbs including Canton and Dedham and Canton. 1967: Jamaica Plain-based highway opponents hold one of their first meetings at a home on Germania Street, near the abandoned Haffenreffer Brewery (now the JPNDC‘s Brewery Small Business Complex). -

Arlington Master Plan REVISED Working Paper Series: Natural Resources and Open Space Introduction Arlington’s landscape is defined by natural features that influence the location and intensity of development. Lakes and ponds, brooks, wetlands, and protected open space provide important public health and ecological benefits, as well as recreational opportunities. Activities in Arlington also affect neighboring towns, so local policies and practices relating to water and other natural resources have regional consequences. This master plan element focuses on irreplaceable land and water resources that must be considered in Menotomy Rocks Park trail. decisions about where, what, and how much to build as Arlington continues to evolve. A. GOALS FOR OPEN SPACE AND NATURAL RESOURCES • Ensure that Arlington’s neighborhoods, commercial areas, and infrastructure are developed in harmony with natural resource concerns. • Value, protect, and maintain the Town’s physical beauty, natural habitats, water bodies, parks, and other open spaces. • Use sustainable planning and engineering approaches to improve air and water quality, reduce flooding, and enhance ecological diversity by managing our natural resources. • Mitigate and adapt to climate change. B. KEY FINDINGS • Arlington’s beauty is influenced by many factors – its varied landscape and topography, the presence of water resources along its borders, and its historic architecture. Arlington’s distinctive street trees and urban woodlands also play a critical role in Arlington’s appearance, walkability, and environmental health. Increased investments in tree maintenance and replacement, including enough personnel to carry out a comprehensive tree and streetscape management program, will be important for Arlington’s future quality of life. • Arlington’s ability to address critical environmental challenges will hinge, in part, on the policies it adopts to guide and regulate future development, and in particular along the corridor encompassing Massachusetts Avenue and the Mill Brook. -
