Su estrecha relación con el Royal Ballet comienza cuando se incorpora a la Sadler Wells School (en la actualidad la Royal Ballet School) a la edad de 15 años. Director artístico de la compañía entre 1970-1977 y Primer Coreógrafo entre 1977-1992. Sus creaciones se distinguen por su penetrante visión sicológica de los personajes aunado a un expresivo uso del lenguaje y estilo clásico. Dichas cualidades las podemos ver en obras maestras como Romeo & Julieta, Gloria, Manón, Mayerling y Requiem.- Nace en Dunfermline (Escocia, Reino Unido) y descubre accidentalmente el mundo del ballet durante su evacuación a Rutford, durante la II Guerra Mundial. A la edad de 15 años solicita a su padre una carta de recomendación de Ninette de Valois para obtener derecho a audicionar. Ingresa con una beca completa a la Sadler Well School y posteriormente pasa a formar parte de la compañía. Crea su primer trabajo coreográfico Danzas Concertantes en 1955 transformándose en uno de los principales coreógrafos a nivel mundial. Fuera de la compañía se desenvuelve como Director del Deutsche Oper Ballet de Berlin (1969-1990) y como Director Asociado al ABT (American Ballet Theatre) (1984-1990). Continúa creando grandes obras, entre las que se destacan El Príncipe de las Pagodas (1989) y su último trabajo El Árbol de Judas (1992). Muere en el escenario del Royal Opera House mientras reponía Mayerling. Entre los grandes bailarines que inspiraron su trabajo se encuentran en lugar destacado: Lynn Seymour, Christopher Gable, Monica Mason, Marcia Haydee, David Wall, Darcey Bussell e Irek Mukhamedov.- 4 BNS ballet nacional sodre d/a julio bocca GARY HARRIS ASISTENTE REPOSITOR Nace en Londres y estudia en el Arts Educational y el Royal Ballet School. En 1978 se une a la compañía London Festival Ballet, ahora conocida como English National Ballet, siendo uno de los principales solistas de la compañía. En 1985 se desvincula para seguir su carrera como bailarín freelance, presentándose en los espectáculos de West End, incluyendo On Your Toes, La Jaula de las Locas y El fantasma de la Ópera. Ha trabajado alrededor del mundo como bailarín, maestro, repositor y diseñador. En 1991 se une al Royal Ballet, London, como anotador y repositor, trabajando con coreógrafos como William Forsythe y Kenneth MacMillan y reponiendo trabajos de Frederick Ashton. Asiste a Kenneth MacMillan en su primera puesta de Manon para el Paris Opera Ballet en 1990, y Song of the Earth para la misma compañía en 1996. Fue Director Artístico Asociado del Hong Kong Ballet y después Director Artístico del Royal New Zealand Ballet desde setiembre del 2001 hasta diciembre de 2010. Desde su retorno de Nueva Zelanda, ha continuado su trabajo como repositor de las obras de Kenneth MacMillan. 5 BNS ballet nacional sodre d/a julio bocca PATRICIA RUANNE ASISTENTE REPOSITOR Nace en la ciudad de Yorkshire, Reino Unido. Estudia en el Royal Ballet School White Lodge, graduándose en la Escuela Superior en Barons Court. Entra en el Royal Ballet Company Covent Garden a los 17 años. Muestra gran habilidad para roles dramáticos, siendo su primer rol de solista en la obra The Invitation de Kenneth MacMillan, seguido de varios otros roles desde Pineapple Poll a Giselle. En 1973 entra al London Festival Ballet donde baila Don Quijote, La Silfide, El Lago de los Cisnes, El Cascanueces, Giselle, Cenicienta, y La Bella Durmiente. Interpreta el rol de la Sirena en Prodigal Son de Berry Morealand, La Dama de Rojo en Sanguine Fan de Ronald Hynd y baila en el estreno en Londres de Rosalinda. Luego de interpretar a Aurora con Nureyev en su producción de “La Bella Durmiente”, interpreta a Julieta en su producción de Romeo y Julieta disfrutando de muchas temporadas exitosas con Nureyev en París, Australia, Nueva York y Washington, así como en Londres, Hong Kong, Sudáfrica, La Scala, Milán, Estados Unidos y Tokio. Continúa expandiendo su repertorio, tanto clásico como contemporáneo, culminando con el rol de Tatiana en Onegin de John Cranko, por el cual fue nominada para el Lawrence Olivier Award Most Outstanding Performance in a New Dance Production por la Sociedad de West End Theatres. Se retira de la danza en 1985 y desde entonces es Maestra de Danza de grandes compañías como el Festival Ballet y la Opera de Paris, principalmente trabajando con jóvenes bailarines, junto a su esposo Frederic Jahn, así como ha sido jurado en varios concursos internacionales. 6 BNS ballet nacional sodre d/a julio bocca ROMEO & JULIETA ARGUMENTO ACTO 1 / 6 ESCENAS En el mercado de Verona, Romeo, joven integrante de la familia de los Montesco, intenta declararle su amor a Rosaline, pero no lo logra debido a un altercado que se produce con Teobaldo, sobrino de los Capuleto, otro joven perteneciente a una familia rival de la suya. El príncipe de Verona aparece y da por terminada la pelea. Julieta, miembro de la familia de los Capuleto, se encuentra jugando con su nana. Sus padres le comunican que va a conocer al joven Paris quien ha pedido su mano en una gran fiesta que se dará por la noche. En el exterior de la casa de los Capuleto vemos llegar a los invitados. Romeo y sus amigos Mercucio y Benvoglio se cuelan disfrazados con máscaras para buscar a la bella Rosaline.- En el gran salón de baile, todos los invitados miran a la bella Julieta bailar. Mercurcio se da cuenta que Romeo no puede dejar de mirarla y baila para distraerlo, pero Romeo ya se ha enamorado perdidamente de ella. Bailan juntos por primera vez. Teobaldo reconoce a Romeo, se da cuenta de lo que pasa y tratará de confrontarlo. Ambos están enamorados. Julieta, que no puede conciliar el sueño, sale a su balcón en busca de aire fresco y pensando en su Romeo. Allí en el jardín lo encuentra esperándola y le declara su amor. 7 ACTO 2 / 3 ESCENAS Nuevamente en el mercado, Romeo fantasea con la idea de poder casarse con Julieta mientras ve que su nana se abre paso entre la muchedumbre para entregarle una carta en la que Julieta acepta ser su esposa. En la capilla, los amantes contraen matrimonio en secreto conducidos por Fray Lorenzo, quien desea que esta unión termine con la eterna rivalidad entre las dos familias. En la última escena presenciamos una discusión callejera que termina en una batalla entre ambos clanes y donde Mercucio resulta muerto en manos de Teobaldo. Romeo lo venga y es exiliado. ACTO 3 / 4 ESCENAS Romeo, en secreto, ha pasado la noche con Julieta de quien se despide al amanecer justo antes de que sus padres entren en compañía de Paris, a quien ella rechaza. Los padres, furiosos ante tanta rebeldía amenazan con desheredarla. Ella corre a ver a Fray Lorenzo. Fray Lorenzo tiene un plan: da a Julieta una poción especial que la dormirá y el resto creerá que está muerta. Así sus padres, deberán enterrarla en la cripta familiar y más tarde, Romeo, advertido por Fray Lorenzo regresará por ella en la noche y se la llevará lejos de Verona. Julieta vuelve a su casa y finge aceptar casarse con Paris. A la mañana siguiente, la encuentran "sin vida" en su cama. En la cripta de la familia de los Capuleto, donde ya yace el cuerpo de Julieta, aparece Romeo quien no ha recibido el mensaje de Fray Lorenzo. Regresa en secreto a Verona pues se ha enterado del fatal final de su enamorada. Al entrar a la cripta y encontrar allí a Paris, lucha con él y le quita la vida. Creyendo aún en la muerte de su amada Julieta decide morir envenenado. Al despertar Julieta se encuentra con que su bien amado ha muerto a sus pies. No pudiéndolo soportar decide también morir y así poder juntar sus almas en el más allá para siempre.- 8 BNS ballet nacional sodre d/a julio bocca IREK MUKHAMEDOV MAESTRO INVITADO Bailarín ruso, nace en Kazan. Estudia danza en el Bolshoi Ballet Academy de Moscú, bajo la tutela de Alexandre Prokofiev. Al finalizar su formación ingresa al Moscow Classical Ballet Company de Natalia Kasatkina y Vladimir Vasiliov en 1979. Dos años más tarde se une al Ballet Bolshoi como primer bailarín, donde estrena el papel de Boris en La Edad de Oro (1984) de Yuri Grigorovich. En 1989 baila con l'Opéra de París La Bella Durmiente, en versión de Rudolf Nureyev. En 1990 se une al Royal Ballet de Londres en calidad de bailarín principal; con esta compañía estrena Farewell (1990) de Kenneth MacMillan y Mr.

A week tonight, amid flowers, Champagne and tears, Sir Anthony Dowell, the longest-serving ballet director since the company’s founder, Ninette de Valois, will end his 15-year regime. He was undoubtedly one of the great world stars of dancing, and the “Celebration Programme” will mark his achievements as such. But about his success as director of the company, opinion is far from unanimous. What makes a good director? The question has never been more of a poser than during Dowell\s captaincy of the ballet, in the most turbulent years of the Royal Opera House’s history. There are many pluses on Dowell’s account sheet - his maintenance of high classical technical standards, his welcoming of key foreign artists into the Royal (particularly Sylvie Guillem and Irek Mukhamedov), his inspiring coaching, to which leading guest stars attest opposite. The rise of Darcey Bussell to world acclaim, the forging of a superb partnership between Mukhamedov and Viviana Durante, this final, nostalgic and beautiful 2000-01 season - these are positive memories. He will be noted as a conservative, and many welcomed this after an insecure period of modernising under his predecessor, Norman Morrice. Whether conservatism has served the company well for the future, though, is debatable. In the shifting landscape of ballet, conservatism is not enough to hold steady.

Del director Tony Palmer, el que va firmar la biografia deplorable del compositor Wagner, aquest documental ens apropa i allunya del Parsifal de Wagner.     Irek Mukhamedov en el Ballet Nacional Sodre El actual Maestro Principal del English National Ballet y musa de Kenneth Macmillan en los años 90 dictará clases al BNS hasta el 1ero de setiembre. Pagina 1/4 Pagina 2/4 Irek Mukhamedov nace en 1960 en Kazan, Rusia. Recibe su formación profesional en el Bolshoi Ballet Academy en Moscú, siguiendo las clases del Maestro Alexander Prokofiev. Después de graduarse en 1978 se une a la Compañía de Ballet Clásico de Moscú, donde baila todos los papeles solistas y principales, dedicándose durante tres años a viajar alrededor del mundo. En 1981 gana el Gran Premio y la Medalla de Oro en el Concurso Internacional de Ballet en Moscú y es invitado inmediatamente a unirse al Ballet Bolshoi como bailarín principal. Allí no sólo se convierte en la musa de Grigorovich, sino que también se vuelve el bailarín más joven en desempeñar el papel principal de su versión de Spartacus. Especialmente para él, Yuri Grigorovich crea el papel principal masculino de Boris en The Golden Age. En 1990 se le ofrece un contrato de bailarín principal con el Royal Ballet en Londres, donde actúa hasta 2004. Su llegada inspira a Sir Kenneth MacMillan a crear un pas de deux de gala para él y Darcey Bussell, en tributo al 90 cumpleaños de la Reina Madre. Sir Kenneth MacMillan encuentra su última musa en Irek Mukhamedov. En 1995, Twyla Tharp lo elige para el papel principal de su primera creación en el Royal Ballet, Mr. Wordly Wise. Biographical History: Catherine Gyll was born Catherine Doolin in Dublin in 1923. After seeing a production by the Irish Ballet Club at the Abbey Theatre in late 1939, she auditioned for and was invited to join the Club by its director, Cepta Cullen. Catherine studied and performed with the Irish Ballet Club until 1943, during which time she also studied radiography at St. Vincent’s hospital, Dublin. Catherine performed in most of the Ballet Club’s repertory during this period, including Puck Fair, Aisling, Lanner Waltz, Rhapsodie, and Peter and the Wolf. In 1943, Catherine went to work in London where she met and married theatre director Peter Gyll (1913-1989) while working as an Assistant Stage Manager. Catherine returned to live in Ireland in 2004. Immediate Source of Acquisition: Donated by Catherine Gyll to the National Dance Archive of Ireland on 26 July 2011. CONTENT AND STRUCTURE Scope and Content: Photographs and memorabilia relating to Catherine Gyll's time with the Irish Ballet Club in the 1940s, and programmes, flyers, brochures, souvenir booklets, press cuttings, and books collected by her, reflecting her lifelong interest in all forms and aspects of dance.
