The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – 2nd Collection for the Poor On Saturday October 28th and Sunday, October 29th, there will be a second collection to benefit the St. Benedict Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Society is an association of men and women who volunteer to serve the needs of others. This is accomplished through a home visit to help people like you and me. Single parents, sick children, families experiencing job loss, extraordinary medical bills, the homebound senior, the handicapped, the working poor. It has become increasingly evident that poverty today differs from the poverty of the past, particularly as it affects our own nation. Whereas, in the past, the poor could claw their way out of poverty, the poor of today are condemned to sink even deeper into it, usually through no fault of their own. It is not just a scarcity of material goods which can ultimately be overcome, but a poverty accompanied by hopelessness and helplessness which few but the poor themselves can define and from which very few will ever rise. Poverty today is total deprivation, compounded destitution, hopeless disadvantage. Poverty can no longer be solved by pushing breadcrumbs off the table for the needy who await them. It seems that there are so many of us who are willing to serve the wealthy and middle classes, and so few of us who are willing to be poor with the poor, who after all, need us most. What can you do? Show your appreciation to God for the many blessings you have received and contribute generously to share some of your blessings with the poor. If you would like to join your parish “Vincentians” in prayer and good works, we meet on the last Monday of the month at 6:30 PM in the rectory.

When asked a bit of a trick question by the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not?” Jesus responds by asking them whose image is on their Roman coins, to which they respond simply “Caesar’s.” Jesus’ response to their reply is known to most of us, “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” The Lord’s answer is far more perceptive than we might think, and it gives another message to us, one we must always remember. If we are followers of Christ, and if we work to be His disciple, the Lord might ask us, “Whose image is on your soul?” We have learned in the First Chapter of Genesis that God created us in His image. The coin may be stamped with Caesar’s image, but each of us is stamped with God’s image. Thus, Jesus is implying that the coin may be Caesar’s but each of us belongs to God. In that regard, we should be striving to be all those things to which Jesus called us. That is in effect what a stewardship way of life is — recognizing that God is in each of us, we are to place ourselves in service to God and to one another. That is what is really meant by “Then repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”
