I was advised to start searching USA in Texas for such a vehicle, as it is a good port to ship the big stuff from. I was only looking for original, nothing messed with. Say Hello to a 1947 WF grain truck, 178" wheelbase, one of the longest. I'd missed out on one just like this before in CA, as the seller did not think a lady from overseas was a serious buyer. I'd just arranged the shipping, and then learned he sold it to someone else. This TX seller wanted cash only sale, he asked for Western Union, but that was too much risk, all the scammers use WU! Then along came hurricane Imelda, the highways in and out of Texas became rivers. The truck did not get swept away, it was still for sale, as no one was buying out of a flooded, storm damaged area. The seller was not an easy character to deal with (putting it politely), and I felt like telling him to trot off! But, I wanted that truck so badly, I had to keep my cool. Eventually we found a solution that worked for us both. If it wasn’t for John of Golden Chariots shipping, several times over the deal would not of happened, from payment to getting it to the docks. Thank you, became an overused phase to him. So just when you think you can relax, try not to worry about containers on boats battling rough transatlantic winter seas... there was a call. A message from “Houston... we have a problem” …the truck won’t fit in the shipping container! Non running vehicles have to ship containerized. So Golden Chariots arranged for the truck bed to be removed, and sent separately with it, so it could catch the boat over after all. Lets reflect on the history of Dodge USA. Horace and John Dodge Brothers, originally made Model T parts for Ford, then they progressed to designing and manufacturing their own cars in 1914. By the 1920s Dodge also became very successful with their truck sales, secondary to the reputation the company earned. One of Americas fast growing top car manufactures, Chrysler, bought Dodge Brothers business in 1928, after both the brothers had died. WP Chrysler was an engineer, he didn’t drive his first car he bought, he took it apart. I did that too! But, because it wouldn’t run, not because studying its construction was more interesting than driving! I’m still doing it now over 30 years on, and the arrival of the big Dodge is no exception. Seized engine, solid brakes, bent prop-shaft, leaking radiator, dangerous old exposed wiring loom, frozen starter motor, rusted out, carb full of dirt, rodent and insect infested cab, wooden truck bed rotten and heavily water logged. But hey, the steering moved and so did the gear shifter and clutch, and it certainly was all OEM! The seller did tell me it wouldn’t run, as it needed “fresh gasoline” he just omitted to tell me that was several decades ago. So with the pandemic lockdown, many have been self isolating, and keeping occupied with their USA projects. I’m in the wrong job for that as a NHS frontline nurse! But after a tiring shift working in a COVID boiler suit, I come home to the big Dodge, and its sheer presence excites me to restore it to run again. I’m lucky to have Colin Rodgers as a good friend, he’s owned and driven one of these very trucks, back in the day. He provides me with the knowledge needed, yeah rebuilding the Carter carb… set the float level 5/64”, thanks Colin. The carb feeds a reliable straight 6 ‘flat head’ side-valve engine, which was still manufactured until the 1960s. Here’s hoping I get mine going on into the 2060s. Long live the big Dodge. Nadine Geary 4 5 1935 Ford Panel Delivery truck Station Wagons Last Of The Giants - 1977 Chrysler Town and Country

My memory of road trips in a great big wagon is a huge part of my childhood. My parents car was a green Caprice wagon with the wood paneling along the side. It was big but not quite as enormous as this 1977 Town & Country wagon submitted by Pat L and found here on craigslist in Hudson Valley, New York for a whopping $15,000. This is the last of the giant wagons, big enough to fit a 4×8 sheet of plywood flat with the door closed. After the ’77 model year, Chrysler scaled down on the size of their full sized station wagons. This clean and tidy “time capsule” sports ‘Barn find' drivable 1935 Ford Panel Delivery truck, solid but the original 440 V8 with only 19,789 miles well aged. It currently has a Ford flathead engine 24 bolt cylinder on the odometer. The listing says it has a head with stamping 8BA which decodes it as a 1950 239 cid full load of power options and even provides 100 hp engine, while accompanying it is an older flathead with a photo of the original bill of sale to prove many parts with matching numbers to the chassis. All original it. Original Ford safely back on the road. For starters, the headlight lenses are still in place. fuel system is going to need a complete overhaul to get rid of the 35 year old gas. The paint and the chrome look very solid with no real signs of damage or rust. The interior is a fantastic deep brown leather that looks to be in excellent condition as well. I don’t know if this model had the rear facing third row seat like my parents Caprice but it does have the what appears to be the 3 way rear door. I would love to take my family on a road trip in this car. It screams comfort with the soft leather benches and the float-like ride. Even better, it has a working 8-track player so the music would be classic. No dance music or rap allowed! The car is in fantastic shape, has low mileage and all the power options but the asking price might be a bit high. That said, the seller is open to offers so I really hope that someone puts it back on the road. Bring back the family road trip!

16 17 1936 Ford Deluxe Flatback Sedan

This is a rare flatback, as most ’36 Fords found today are humpback. This Ford has been in the family since the mid 1940’s and was stored in California for years with the plan to restore it back to its original splendor, but the opportunity for restoration never came around. As you can see, the body is really solid on this car, and there’s a great reason for that! Steve continues: The body is in good shape with minimal rust thanks to being stored in California for so many years. You can see the California black plates in some of the photos. I personally think the rear “flat back” styling is a lot prettier than the “hump back” or trunk style. I love that tire cover, too. Needless to say, after this amount of time there isn’t a whole lot of interior left. However, I do see a lot of floor present, which reflects the California life of the car. I am not aware of any missing parts and the engine was changed over to a 1940 Mercury flathead V8 and brakes were changed I believe in 1940 as well. Original bumpers are included and wrapped up for protection. It’s pretty obvious that the engine will need some refurbishment, but at least you can get pretty much anything for a FoMoCo flathead V8.

Following retirement I purchased a succession of ERF’s and currently own a 1996 ERF EC6 which I show at the Annual Pershore Plum Festival and MyMy ClassicClassic Fulfilment of this is where my fascination with American cars was rekindled. In 2019 I was wandering around the American car section with my wife; or drooling would be more accurate! We were particularly drawn to a beautiful plum and white coloured Dodge Custom Royal Lancer, beautiful car and not a blemish. Not knowing much about the car I plucked up courage to speak a Dream to the owner, yes you’ve guessed it was John Miller. Well John couldn’t have been more helpful with technical details and explained how he had imported the car from the States. Little did I know that I had been admiring the 2019 Car of the Year winner? We decided there and then that we should buy an American car, more status than an ERF! And I subsequently joined Pre 50 AAC as a starting point. Several; friends offered their opinion on buying a classic car, including “don’t buy the first one you see” Well as time isn’t exactly on my side, you can work my age out! , I searched the adverts but nothing much appealed to me until I spotted a 1957 Chevrolet Two Ten 4 door sedan being advertised in North Yorks. I took a pal with me to view the car who was a mechanic for a team racing Mustangs all over Europe and Maurice is a fountain of knowledge. Adrian Harper at Retro Cars was a pleasure to deal with and as Maurice’s view was that we couldn’t find a better one, a deal was done, the first car I viewed! The Chevy was subsequently delivered in January and following a long search for storage it is now stored next to the ERF. I can only find one blemish on it, it has a rather smart chrome tissue dispenser under the dashboard but is it pock marked with what I can only guess are stiletto heel marks, how on earth did they get there?
