[1] In reaction to the traditional establishment, constituted especially by the École des Beaux-Arts, the Paris Salon, and the styles and techniques they promulgated, Toulouse-Lautrec cultivated his own approach to painting, while also pioneering new methods in lithography and the art of the poster. He explored popular, even vulgar subject matter, while collaborating with vanguard artists, writers, and stars of Bohemian Paris. Despite his artistic innovations, he remains an enigmatic and somewhat liminal figure in the history of French modern art. -
In the Steps of Cezanne
Aix-en-Provence GB IN THE STEPS OF CEZANNE 2018 IN CEZANNE'S COUNTRY (1839 - 1906) Paul Cezanne was passionately attached to Aix and his Provence, and summed his love up in a single sentence when he was away: ”When you’re born there, it’s hopeless, nothing else is good enough”. It was while walking in the Aix countryside as a teena- ger with Émile Zola that he realised he was an artist. The particular light of Provence guided him on his creative path to the threshold of abstraction. And it is in Aix-en-Provence and the surrounding area that you can share Cezanne's experience intensely today, as you visit the streets, places and landscapes that marked the life, the outlook and the work of the father of modern painting… ”the father of us all!” Picasso said. 2 | | 3 IN THE HEART OF AIX-EN-PROVENCE The town is home to several precious historical sites which embody the mysteries surrounding Cezanne. For today’s visitor, forays into this emblematic painter’s universe include discove- ring the Cezanne's Studio on the old Lauves hill or exploring the open-air Bibémus quarries. Walk in the steps of Cezanne and visit the city as he expe- rienced it… A pedestrian route marked by studs stamped with a “C” allows you to discover the landmarks of his early years (the houses where he lived as a child, his schools, etc), the places that marked him, the addresses of his family and ac- quaintances, the cafés where he met his friends and other artists… From classical elegance to Baroque opulence, Aix’s architectural heritage is the setting for your walk in the old town and its surroundings. -

Dossier De Presse
Renoir, Impressionism, and Full-Length Painting
FIRST COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF RENOIR’S FULL-LENGTH CANVASES BRINGS TOGETHER ICONIC WORKS FROM EUROPE AND THE U.S. FOR AN EXCLUSIVE NEW YORK CITY EXHIBITION RENOIR, IMPRESSIONISM, AND FULL-LENGTH PAINTING February 7 through May 13, 2012 This winter and spring The Frick Collection presents an exhibition of nine iconic Impressionist paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, offering the first comprehensive study of the artist’s engagement with the full-length format. Its use was associated with the official Paris Salon from the mid-1870s to mid- 1880s, the decade that saw the emergence of a fully fledged Impressionist aesthetic. The project was inspired by Renoir’s La Promenade of 1875–76, the most significant Impressionist work in the Frick’s permanent collection. Intended for public display, the vertical grand-scale canvases in the exhibition are among the artist’s most daring and ambitious presentations of contemporary subjects and are today considered masterpieces of Impressionism. The show and accompanying catalogue draw on contemporary criticism, literature, and archival documents to explore the motivation behind Renoir’s full-length figure paintings as well as their reception by critics, peers, and the public. Recently-undertaken technical studies of the canvases will also shed new light on the artist’s working methods. Works on loan from international institutions are La Parisienne from Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919), Dance at Bougival, 1883, oil on canvas, 71 5/8 x 38 5/8 inches, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Picture Fund; photo: © 2012 Museum the National Museum Wales, Cardiff; The Umbrellas (Les Parapluies) from The of Fine Arts, Boston National Gallery, London (first time since 1886 on view in the United States); and Dance in the City and Dance in the Country from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris. -
Final Weeks of Popular Jean Renoir Retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release November 1994 FINAL WEEKS OF POPULAR JEAN RENOIR RETROSPECTIVE AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART The Museum of Modern Art's popular retrospective of the complete extant work of director Jean Renoir (1894-1979), one of cinema's great masters, continues through November 27, 1994. Presented in commemoration of the centenary of the director's birth, the exhibition comprises thirty-seven works, including thirty-three films by Renoir and a 1993 BBC documentary about the filmmaker by David Thompson. Twenty-three of the works by Renoir have been drawn from the Museum's film archives. Many of the remaining titles are also from the Cinematheque frangaise, Paris, and Interama, New York. The son of the Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Jean Renoir produced a rich and complex oeuvre that mined the spectacle of life, in all its fascinating inconstancy. In 1967 he said, "I'm trying to discover human beings, and sometimes I do." Although critics and scholars disagree on how to categorize Renoir's films -- some believe that his work can be divided into periods, while others argue that his films should be viewed as an indivisible whole -- there is no dissent about their integrity. His works are unfailingly humane, psychologically acute, and bursting with visual and aural moments that propel the narratives. - more - 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019-5498 Tel: 212-708-9400 Cable: MODERNART Telex: 62370 MODART 2 Highlights of the second half of the program include a new 35mm print of La Bete humaine (The Beast in Man, 1938), a powerful adaptation of a novel by Emile Zola, previously available in the United States only in 16mm. -
