Page 2 of 94 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu While recognition of any kind is welcome, acknowledgement from one's peers is the best there is. On that basis, the annual awarding of the Master Pork Producer honors during the Iowa Pork Congress is a major highlight of the three-day convention. For members of the Iowa Pork Producers, selection is more than just a nod in their direction; it is tantamount to industry-wide approval for a job well done. Producers are nominated by county pork producer associations and, after farm visits made by Iowa State University and Iowa Pork Producers Association officials, the master producers are selected from the nominees. The awards program is a cooperative effort between the Iowa Pork Producers Association and the ISU Extension Service. Proceeds from this luncheon benefit a cancer research clinic focused on identification and early detection of BRCA gene mutations in women at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center—home to the Davidoff Cancer Center—a world class facility whose sole focus is on the treatment and prevention of cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer afflicting Jewish women in the United States and Israel. Throughout their lifetimes, one in eight Jewish women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Genetic mutations in the BRCA genes cause breast cancer and are known to be more prevalent among Ashkenazi women. With each passing year, more women diagnosed with breast cancer are surviving. This can be attributed in part to a number of factors: improved primary care at diagnosis, enhanced treatment facilities, advances in radiation equipment, and above all, early detection.

  • Martin Balsam and the Refining of Male Character Acting in American Films, 1957-1976 John Thomas Mcguire, Siena College
Man In A Hat: Martin Balsam and the Refining of Male Character Acting in American Films, 1957-1976 John Thomas McGuire, Siena College [email protected] Volume 8. 1 (2020) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2020.235 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This article attempts a definition at what constitutes “character acting” in mainstream cinema in the United States and argues that throughout the peak of his film career—roughly, 1957 through 1976--Martin Balsam refined the definition of male character acting in American film, a parameter previously established by such skilled practitioners as Eugene Pallette and Claude Rains. Balsam did this through his ability to portray what can be termed “a man in a hat” portrayals: tartly humorous, reliable, and sometimes authoritative supporting characters, usually wearing a chapeau. This is clearly seen in such performances as the private investigator in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) and most interestingly, a partner in an unusual subway hijacking in Joseph Sargent’s The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three (1974). Keywords: Character acting, male, in film, United States; Martin Balsam; Academy Award for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor; Claude Rains; Alfred Hitchcock; 20th Century film acting. STATEMENT OF NATHAN LEWIN BEFORE THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS ON THE REAUTHORIZATION OF THE INDEPENDENT COUNSEL ACT MARCH 3, 1999 My name is Nathan Lewin. I have practiced law in Washington, D. C., for the past 30 years after serving in the Departments of Justice and State during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. I was a federal prosecutor in the 1960’s and have been a white-collar criminal defense lawyer since joining my present firm, Miller Cassidy Larroca & Lewin, in 1969. I have also taught at Harvard, University of Chicago, and Georgetown Law Schools, and gave the first course ever given in a national law school on "Representation of the White-Collar Criminal Defendant" when I was a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Law School in 1975 – shortly after Watergate. I might add that among the students in that course was Jamie Gorelick, who came to work for our firm, became a partner, and then provided distinguished service for several years during the Clinton Administration as Deputy Attorney General. I am presently teaching at Columbia Law School and George Washington University Law School. I have also had the privilege of arguing 27 cases in the Supreme Court of the United States, many of which have involved issues of criminal law. And in May 1987 I was asked by then Attorney General Edwin Meese to represent him in the Independent Counsel investigation that was initiated against him. For the next 14 months, assisted ably by my partner Jim Rocap and other personnel in our firm, I represented the Attorney General in what was – to that date – the most highly publicized Independent Counsel investigation.
