ORG. PROFIT - NON Edvard’s Summer Vacation 2013

Do you remember those days after summer vacation when you had to report on what you did during your break? Well, the GSO Maestro has had a busy summer on multiple continents and at one of the most respected summer music venues in the world.

In June, Maestro Tchivzhel headed “down under” for a series of conducting dates. The Maestro was on the podium with the Southern Sinfonia in Dunedin, New Zealand, a beautiful city with Old English architecture. He conducted a special concert celebrating the re-opening of Dunedin’s majestic Town Hall after two years of extensive renovations. Showcasing the hall’s large pipe organ, the triumphal Saint Saens Symphony #3 (“The Organ Symphony”) was a festive finale to this special evening. A splendid celebratory party followed!

The following week, for the fourth consecutive year the Maestro conducted the distinguished Queensland Symphony in Brisbane, Australia; his return engagement for 2014 has already been booked. The program included two Ravel Piano Concerti: the Concerto for Left Hand and the G major Concerto, the latter received so enthusiastically that the fiery third movement was done as an encore! The finale was Tchaikovsky’s powerful Symphony #6, “Pathetique,” with five curtain calls and a Nutcracker encore.

Then it was on to Rio to conduct the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfonia. Offering a wonderful “American” perspective, the orchestra performed Bern- stein’s Overture to “Candide” and the Symphonic Dances Suite from “West Side Story.” The exciting program concluded with Tchaikovsky’s passionate “Manfred” Symphony and six curtain calls!

In June alone, Maestro Tchivzhel logged about 58 hours in the air and racked up more than a few frequent flyer miles! continued next page….

Edvard overlooking Rio Edvard in Rio with Sugarloaf in the background In early August, the Maestro and Luba headed to the Berkshires of Massachusetts for a weekend of splendid music created by the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood. This was a specially crafted weekend outing for the Tchivzhels and other friends created by former GSO Executive Director Ken Johnson. Your correspondent was fortunate enough to join the entourage for this incredible outing.

The group attended three concerts that weekend and heard incredible music by Ravel, Poulenc, Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Dvo- rak, and Ravel. Two of the soloists that weekend were Lang Lang in the 1st Beethoven Piano Concerto and Yo Yo Ma in the Dvorak Concerto.

Dining was one of the special treats with meals at the wonderful Highwood Estate on the Tanglewood grounds, and an elegant dinner Saturday evening at Seranak, the former summer home of the BSO’s legendary conductor, Serge Koussevitzky. The group received a special tour of the second floor private quarters of Seranak and saw Kousevitzsky’s room, preserved as though he might walk in any minute, grab one of his exquisite capes and formal outfits in the armoire and head for “The Shed” at Tan- glewood.

The highlight of the weekend was a private visit of the Tchivzhels with Yo Yo Ma following the Sunday afternoon performance. Ken had made special arrangements for this visit. Without question, one of the most exciting things was the moment when Yo Yo Ma emerged from his back stage dressing room, surveyed the crowd eagerly waiting to chat with him, saw Edvard, and im- mediately exclaimed “EDVARD!” Edvard and Luba were quickly escorted into the dressing room by trusty Ma aides and the door swiftly closed for their time together.

We often assert, with pride, that we have an internationally acclaimed Maestro. Not that we need any confirmation of that, but most assuredly the summer’s activities make the case!
