June 9, 10, 11 Nashville News-Leader Wednesday, June 8, 2016 News 5B White Cliffs News by Mary Crosslin There were no emergencies in the community this week. Everyone enjoyed Memorial Day with family and friends giving thanks for the gift that many of our family members have made, and for the contribution of all the American military participants. We give thanks to God for this great time in history, that we have set aside this special time to celebrate all Veterans. Thank you again. My grandson, Wilbert Maceo Crosslin, and his family visited with me this weekend. My great grandson will graduate from Beasley Academy middle school next week. We are happy for him. I apologize for the errors made last week on the spelling of several Veteran names in our honor roll of veterans. We so value what you did for the cause. Piggee Memorial Baptist Church will host their Women’s Day on Saturday, June 18, 2016. They will have two dynamic speakers. First Lady Rose Dixon is the sponsor, along with the women of Piggee Memorial. The women will be dressed in white. The public is invited to come and be Spiritually inspired. Blacks in History: Serena Jameka Williams (September 26, 1981) - She is an American professional Tennis player. She ranks number one in the women’s singles tennis by the WTA. She was the second Black woman to ever win a Grand Slam title; Althea Gibson (1927-2003) was the fi rst. Serena is a very colorful player, and has her own unique style of tennis wear. Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, an ordained Baptist Minister (1894-1984) was a career educator serving various times as a professor at South Carolina State College, Dean of the Howard University school of religion, and President of Morehouse College. He also served as the fi rst Black President of the Atlanta school board. Mays was a vocal critic of segregation and racism in America. He was an important early mentor of many Civil Rights leaders, who were the product of Black colleges including Martin L. King Jr. Additionally, his written work and widespread respect in the academic community helped to coalesce support for the Civil Rights movement among the Nation’s intellectual elite. It was my privilege to hear Dr. Mays deliver the gradua- tion address for the George Washington University in Washington D.C. in the 90’s.
