James Glaisher, pioniere della meteorologia, vorrebbe toccare con mano il cielo e comprendere da vicino le dinamiche atmosferiche. Ma per farlo gli serve un pallone aerostatico e un pilota. Imprevedibile come il tempo, Amelia Wren fa al caso suo. Moglie intrepida di un pilota esperto, morto tragicamente due anni prima per salvarla, Amelia accetta di accompagnarlo in un'avventura scientifica che gli permetterà di effettuare misurazioni di temperatura, pressione e umidità. Tra ascese e discese a piombo, rovesci e confronti dialettici, James e Amelia porteranno più in alto la cultura metereologica. Nel 2018, Tom Harper aveva diretto l''ascesa' di una cantante country (''A proposito di Rose''), che sognava di lasciare Glasgow per Nashville, accumulando convenzioni invece di rinnovarle. Un anno dopo, dirige un'altra eroina che scala cielo e gloria con uno 'charming balloon' ('The Aeronauts') in barba alle convenzioni sociali dell'epoca vittoriana. Sopra il Regno Unito il cielo è sempre grigio ma Amelia come Rose è 'wild' quanto basta per bucare le nuvole e trovare il sereno. Se la prima doveva vedersela con una madre che le ricordava le sue responsabilità a terra, Amelia trova nella sorella una zavorra altrettanto irriducibile. Ma nel cinema di Tom Harper non c'è parente che tenga. Perché i suoi film sono sempre un'ode alla follia e alla potenza del sogno, una combinazione avventurosa di eroine forti e fragili e altri ossimori da solleticare produttori e pubblico. Come i primi palloni a idrogeno, il regista carica a bordo sacchi di sabbia e poi li scarica per salire di quota e raggiungere coi suoi protagonisti il miraggio impossibile che da copione gli scettici sprezzano. A diffidare a questo giro (di mongolfiera) è la prestigiosa Royal Meteorological Society che non sembra prendere troppo sul serio le tesi di James Glaisher, membro fondatore tra i primi a effettuare rilievi ad alta quota mediante palloni aerostatici. Ad accompagnare le sue escursioni nella vita vera fu sempre Henry Tracey Coxwell, aeronauta navigato che lo condusse il 5 settembre del 1862 a 10.900 metri sopra il livello del mare. Al cinema il pilota britannico si converte in Amelia Wren, personaggio di finzione e concentrato mirabile di tutte quelle donne che non si limitarono a guardare gli uomini affrontare le imprese più rischiose. Felicity Jones incarna con piglio pionieristico tutte le 'figlie dell'aria' che hanno compiuto ascensioni straordinarie e hanno dato un contributo speciale all'attività aviatoria. Dimenticate, 'as usual', dalla storia, le donne volanti vengono riscattate da Tom Harper che propone a Eddie Redmayne il ruolo 'del secondo', uno scienziato (di nuovo) con scarsa attitudine al volo e all'avventura, e a Felicity Jones, la parte del leone, una pilota intrepida con un grande senso dello spettacolo e un paio di stivaletti vittoriani decisamente versatili. 'The Aeronauts' rivisita creativamente la storia vera del meteorologo James Glaisher, che arrivò dove nessuno era ancora arrivato nel XIX secolo. Il film rintraccia la missione che nel 1862 rischiò di ucciderlo e ci costruisce intorno un 'romance', la storia di un uomo e una donna che faranno di tutto per realizzare il proprio sogno, trovando se stessi in cielo e un po' di pace sulla terra. Ancora insieme, Redmayne e Jones (''La teoria del tutto'') consumano un sentimento platonico dentro un film a 'porte chiuse' e a cielo aperto, attraverso l'atmosfera, dove l'aria è più sottile e la vista lascia (letteralmente) senza fiato.     December 2019 Program Updates from VP and Program Director Doron Weber Sloan Hosted Reception Celebrating Congressional Gold Medal for Hidden Figures Women On December 9 at 5pm, Sloan hosted an official celebration with Senator Chris Coons and Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson to honor the real-life women scientists portrayed in Margot Lee Shetterly’s Sloan-supported book and the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. After passing in both the Senate and the House, a bill was signed into law by President Trump in November to award the women the highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal. The bill honors Katherine Johnson and Christine Darden and posthumously honors Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan, as well as the thousands of other women computers, for their contributions to science during the space race. At the event, Coons and Johnson presented an official proclamation of the bill to Darden (pictured left).
