  • Bill Oppenheim, Dec
Bill Oppenheim, Dec. 16, 2009–Roll The Dice FROM THE DESK OF... Bill Oppenheim ROLL THE DICE Predictability. Well, who wouldn=t like a crystal ball? Mine might be slightly less clouded than others, but anybody who tells you they can predict which sires are going to be successful, and which aren=t, is deluding somebody. There=s a long history of can=t-miss stallion prospects who ended up on foreign shores, and equally a distinguished roll-call of relative nobodies (Distorted Humor, Pivotal) who=ve become household names in the breeding world. Write it down a 100 times: what they do on the racetrack isn=t necessarily what they=re going to do as a sire. In recent years, stallions that were unproven when the horses were bred have sired more than their share of good horses in their first or second crops. It wasn=t just a sales ploy, though for a while there you had a better chance of making money by using first-year sires regardless of whether they ended up good, bad, or indifferent. Rather the opposite is the case during recessionary times--breeders tend to fall back on the proven commodities, and the unproven sire becomes a more difficult sell. You can particularly see this when, as now, the prices on proven sires have fallen so much. Thus, I have knocked out from consideration as When you have legitimately good stallions standing for >value= unproven sires five horses who stand for more $7,500 and $10,000, the unproven horse at that and than $40,000: F2008 Bernardini ($60,000 first all higher prices has to offer something really special to two-year-olds 2010); F2009 Street Sense ($50,000); attract those breeders who were fighting over them and F2010 Curlin ($60,000) and Big Brown ($55,000)-- two years ago.

  • Mister Arapahoe Get Happy Mister Has Never Lost a Race in His Home State, and He Earned His Most Impressive Victory to Date in the $100,000 Arapahoe Park Classic
Mister Arapahoe Get Happy Mister has never lost a race in his home state, and he earned his most impressive victory to date in the $100,000 Arapahoe Park Classic. Colorado-bred Since even before the first Kentucky Derby in 1875, the Bluegrass State has far and away Get Happy Mister is been the leading breeder of Thoroughbred racehorses. But there are exceptions to every rule; putting his name in Secretariat was bred in Virginia and Cigar in Maryland, and a Montana-bred even won the Run the record books for the Roses (Spokane in 1889). In recent years, state-bred programs around the region have • produced some stellar horses of their own—Oklahoma has millionaire and graded stakes winner By Denis Blake She’s All In, Texas can boast about one of the nation’s top 3-year-old fillies in Fiftyshadesofgold Photos by Coady and Vicar’s in Trouble won the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby for his home state. Now, Photography Colorado is getting in on the game with Get Happy Mister, who just might be the best horse ever bred in the Centennial State. The safest bet at Arapahoe Park near Denver has been on the nose of the 4-year-old gelding, who in nine races at his favorite track has visited the winner’s circle every single time. Consigned by breeder Willard Burbach to the 2011 Silver Cup Yearling Sale put on by the Colorado Thor- oughbred Breeders Association, the son of First Samurai sold for $46,000 to Annette Bishop’s Tangarae Farms LLC.

Bill Oppenheim, Dec 7, 2012-Value Sires VALUE SIRES: KENTUCKY $15K & UNDER Two things steer me to start this December series of touting stallions with Kentucky sires due to stand for $15,000 or under in 2013: first, it becomes very difficult, diplomatically, not to endorse wholesale the 93 stallions we identified last week as standing for $17,500 (or equivalent) or more. Of course, some we like better than others, and the same will be true of anybody looking at the list, but it=s a fair point they wouldn=t be standing for that much if they didn=t have good credentials. Second--and this is certainly the case for European stallions at that level (^12,000/i15,000), from what we were told at the Tattersalls= December Sale in Newmarket this week--most of them are full anyway. It=s all very well for us to say ALawman is the buy of the year at i20,000@ (which he is) if he=s completely full. Of course, it=s entirely possible that some of the sires we do mention this week are full as well, but at least they are all scheduled to stand for $15,000 or under in 2013 in Kentucky. These are organized in two alphabetical lists: first, those which have stood at stud already, and second, those retiring for 2013. Apologies in advance if your deserving stallion didn=t get a mention. As always, nominations from the floor are encouraged. The ones we=ve selected are simply those we think have the best stories for the money.

  • Old Fashioned
OLD FASHIONED A brilliant, undefeated graded stakes winner at two, and a graded score again at three, Old Fashioned ranks as one of the most talented sons of Unbridled’s Song. He’s off to a stellar start to his stud career, as a leading second season sire of 2014, his trio of graded stakes winners including multiple grade one scorer Fashion Plate. Old Fashioned is free of Northern Dancer, and his daughter Fashion Plate – winner of the Las Virgenes Stakes (gr. I) and Santa Anita Oaks (gr. I) – is out of a mare by Citidancer (IRE) (by Lomond, a Northern Dancer half-brother to Seattle Slew). Old Fashioned’s dam is closely related to the dam of French Deputy, one of the most important sons of Northern Dancer line stallion, Deputy Minister, so mares from that line will have considerable appeal, with candidates including daughters of French Deputy – who gives inbreeding to the family of Old Fashioned – Dehere, Silver Deputy, Salt Lake Touch Gold, Awesome Again (sire of Ghostzapper), Deputy Commander, Forest Camp and Service Stripe. The cross of Unbridled’s Song and his sons with mares descending from Northern Dancer through Storm Cat has been one of the most prolific from this sire line, and there are already Unbridled’s Song line stakes winners out of mares by Tale of the Cat (sire of Lion Heart), Storm Boot, Storm Creek, Sea of Secrets, Forest Wildcat (sire of Wildcat Heir), Forestry, Tabasco Cat, Giant’s Causeway (sire of First Samurai), Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg, Cactus Ridge and Wiseman’s Ferry, grandsire of Scat Daddy), Catienus and Menifee (by Harlan, also the sire of Harlan’s Holiday), while other possibilities include Stormy Atlantic, Bernstein, Stormin Fever, Freud, Bluegrass Cat, Yankee Gentleman and Pure Prize.
