Steve was my first choice to film with for several years, up until his return to Sydney last year. In that time he filmed for BBC Sport at the World Cup and European Championships in football. He also filmed the BBC1 documentary Premiership Priory in which we spent three months filming in former England captain Tony Adams’ addiction clinic. It was a very delicate situation because we were dealing with drug addicts, alcoholics and gamblers, all in therapy. Steve was the perfect man for the job. Great pictures, great work ethic and a feel for the editorial needs of the situation. Steve is hardworking and creative. The pictures he shoots are beautiful. He also knows how to best cut his cloth when time is tight. I would thoroughly recommend him for any projects. If you need any further reference please don’t hesitate to give me a call. Yours faithfully, Steve Boulton Series Editor, BBC Football BBC Sport Television Centre London W12 7RJ (w) 0044 208 22 57308 (m) 0044 7711 984 316 Reference regarding Steve Bye: I have worked with Steve Bye on countless occasions during his time in the UK. I first worked with him in 2004 and soon found him to be my favoured cameraman. In fact, as I have also worked at rival broadcasters ITV and Sky Sports I think I would be in a good position to say he would be one of, if not the best cameraman I have worked with. The work Steve has done with me varies from beautifully lit sit? down in depth interviews to quick turnaround, quick reaction pieces where the cameraman needs to have his wits about him. Not only does he understand direction quickly and translate that to excellent images he is also able to operate with the minimum of directorial input when such events require it. He understands the need for artistic images and what makes a perfect shot and is therefore an excellent "art" or iso cameraman as well as superb in filming interviews, observational material or outside broadcasts. I would not hesitate in thoroughly recommending him. Tim Boyd * Producer, BBC Sport Room 5110 * Television Centre * Wood Lane * London * W12 7RJ M: +44 (0)7968 070120 T: +44 (0)20 857 61087 F: +44 (0)20 87493560 [email protected] To whom it may concern: Stephen bye is without doubt one of the very finest cameramen I have worked with in my 7 years producing/directing for BBC Sport. His creativity, effort, work rate and good spirit made him the perfect colleague, and his return to Australia left a hole in the BBC's camera roster which it is still struggling to fill. I was privileged to have Steve work on much of my best received work, including a short film which was short listed for this year's Royal Television Society Awards. I can say with some assurance that the film would not have been the piece it was, without Steve's input. Stuart Hutchison BBC Sport Tel: 020 8576 9550 Mob: 07870 348745 .

E-Footy RECORD 31st May 2008 Issue 9 Editorial with Marty King AFL AND AFLPA SET TO MOVE ON NEW ALCOHOL POLICY It’s terrifi c to see the AFL and the AFL Players Association working collaboratively to formulate a new policy on responsible alcohol consumption in the football environment. They are seeking feedback from each of the 16 AFL clubs, together with key national drug and alcohol experts, before framing a policy with guidelines that all AFL clubs and associated bod- ies like AFL Queensland can use to develop their own. This comes after a lot of background work was done over almost two years and the AFL Com- mission received a full briefi ng. The AFL, the Players’ Association and the AFL clubs understand that quite clearly that they have a responsibility to promote responsible drinking within the AFL and among the 16 clubs, the players and staff. But it’s not just about the elite level. The same will apply at the grassroots level and we at AFLQ will look to partner with the League on this important initiative. The guidelines within the AFL Framing Policy will provide a framework for AFL clubs and asso- ciated bodies to assist them in developing their own individual club responsible alcohol policies. The AFL Framing Policy lists a set of objectives for players and club staff, including the devel- opment of approaches for responsible consumption, effective pathways for treatment of alco- hol-related problems, creating responsible drinking cultures and using player welfare oriented and education-based approaches to promote responsible alcohol consumption.

  • Driving Efficiency at the BBC
Driving efficiency at the BBC To deliver quality content for the Licence Fee payer Foreword November 2014 In February 2014, Tony Hall made a speech to the Oxford Media Convention where he argued that although the BBC had done much to become efficient, we must never stop looking for ways to do more. At the same time, Tony asked me to carry out an efficiency review, looking both at the BBC’s record and where we can go further to deliver value for money for Licence Fee payers. Having completed this review, I am immensely proud of the range, depth and quality of the BBC’s content and services. I see very clearly the significant financial challenges the BBC has faced and continues to face, the extent of change taking place across all parts of the BBC and the scale of achievement in doing more for less. Over the last 20 years the BBC has significantly increased the number of services it provides to Licence Fee payers for the same price in real terms. In 2010 the Licence Fee was held flat at £145.50 for six years and the BBC took on new annual funding obligations which build up to £500 million (13 per cent of the Licence Fee) by April 2014. Funding these obligations, absorbing inflation and finding the investment needed to stay relevant to audiences in the digital world requires an unprecedented focus on efficiency. Since the start of the current Charter, BBC staff have delivered annual savings of £1.1 billion and we are on track to deliver £1.5 billion by 2016/17.

going down the hole Beaconsfield, Celebrities and the Changing News Culture in Australia JASON BAINBRIDGE We didn’t realise the hype would be as big as it has been, and it hasn’t really sunk in yet. When we were down the hole one day, I remember tapping Brant on the shoulder and asking him if he thought we’d make the front page of The [Launceston] Examiner, our local paper. Then we get out and Oprah wants to interview us! Todd Russell1 I would like my life to settle down and to be normal again … Before we could go outside and there would be no cameras on us but now cameras follow Dad and everyone wants his autograph … And I wish the media would mind its business because they say things that are not true. Maddison Russell (Todd Russell’s daughter, from a writing competition)2 — Introduction By the time this article sees print, the events at Beaconsfield, Tasmania will have joined a backlog of similar news moments, largely unremembered by all but those who were personally affected by what happened there. Yet for fourteen days in mid-2006 this small mining town became, like so many places before it, ‘the network executive’s best friend’3 and an indication of a significant change in the way television news is reported and packaged in Australia. At 9.23 pm, on 25 April (Anzac Day), a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine killed miner Larry Knight (his body was recovered two days later). On 30 April, two miners—Todd Russell and Brant Webb—were discovered to still be alive one kilometre underground.

We are currently consulting on the proposed quotas as set out in the draft operating licence published on 29 March 2017. See https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and- statements/ofcom-and-the-bbc for further details. As our new BBC responsibilities did not start until April 2017 and this report is based on 2016 data, the BBC quotas reported on herein were set by the BBC Trust. Ayo Akinwolere BAFTA Nominated & RTS Award-Winning Broadcaster Ayo Akinwolere is an incredibly versatile BAFTA nominated and RTS award winning broadcaster. With an array of credits to his name, Ayo has worked across several genres and shows, starting his presenting career on the iconic national institution that is Blue Peter. It was at Blue Peter that he set a brand new world record for the deepest location for an open water swim, which saw him battle across a 5 mile stretch of water in the Pacific Ocean. This incredible feat of endurance was even more significant, as Ayo had a deep-rooted phobia of deep water, so much so that he only learnt to swim 10 weeks prior to the challenge! After completing this, he went on to devise the Swim Challenge, a national movement looking to address the dwindling number of swimmers in Britain. Within ten weeks, he took a group of non-swimmers and taught them to swim, whilst exploring the issues that stop so many from taking part. The project was supported by the BBC’s Get Inspired initiative and Speedo. The project’s legacy has seen hundreds of adults of different ethnicities and age groups learn to swim in East London; providing a more holistic and accessible way to teach the sport. With a natural aptitude and passion for sport, Ayo has gone on to present for flagship sports events and broadcasts at the BBC, including the London mini-marathon and commentary duties on the South African World Cup for CBBC. His work within this genre has seen him interview some of the greats of sport including Pele, Usain Bolt, Lewis Hamilton and Jessica Ennis.
