OVA PLAN OUTLAW STAR 2 Working Title: Sword of Wind OVA PLAN OUTLAW STAR 2 Working Title: Sword of Wind Outlaw Star 2: Sword of Wind This was planned in 1998, but became a frozen title. The story is a single episode that takes place three years after the series. The title of the anime (Sword of Wind) is the name of the second ship Gene will pilot. The ship was developed by a new friend of Gene’s, Dr. Sputnik, who is a Russian space exile. PLEASE BE AWARE!This is a draft proposal that hasn’t yet been given the full go-ahead by Morning Star Studios. (In other words, this is only an internal project so far; we’ve been working on it but without a guaranteed future for it.) We have created this document to showcase some of our ideas as fan service to those who’d like a sequel to Outlaw Star. We’re interested in fan input. Bandai Visual has less strict policies about content than Sunrise, the latter of which matters can be quite long-winded with. Therefore we can just say we’re hoping we can work something out with Bandai. For now, let’s consider it as something fun we’re working on independently. In the Oracion System, Fred Luo is aboard a transport ship when a terrible accident occurs! Dead or alive?! This is a major crisis. The status of Fred is unknown. Gene learns what has happened and disregards his current priorities to investigate this. What really happened to Fred? In his travels, Gene makes a new friend, and Jim meets a young girl aged fourteen. Nonetheless, there is some conflict, and Gene and Jim have different ideals. Where is the line drawn for pledges and promises? Keep in mind that this plot is a temporary proposal. The meetings have not yet proceeded, and thus, no final decisions have been made. There will soon be an extensive effort to make these plans and the proposal apparent, and make sure more staff oversee the project. Our company is currently taking a casual approach to the project and nothing is set in stone; it could be a couple of years until media is released. Keep in mind that the project is Morning Star Studios’ responsibility. Please do not contact Sunrise. This project is in very early planning stages. In the past we have worked with Sunrise. However, we are currently trying to liaise with Bandai Visual. Soon after reaching his destination, Fred expresses his disappointment; “These Oracion System people from the Links group just say I am poor, and insist I’m only offering bribes for men.” His two bodyguards awkwardly nod. // Translation Note: next paragraph is likely to be inaccurate and was difficult to translate // The scene changes and a Starwind & Hawking Enterprises billboard is in view. However, much of the information has been crossed out and a painted police notice is next to it requesting the seizing of such advertising, with an attached phone number: “CALL 4510 855A”. The Starwind & Hawking business is shown with even more notices in leaflet form. “Hawking” is battened making it more noticeable than “Starwind”. Gene Starwind watches a television report that panics him, stating that Fred Luo’s spacecraft mysteriously exploded with no intel as to whether Fred is alive or dead. This is where the story begins. Jim Hawking (Age: 14) He goes his separate ways and no longer works closely with Gene, but Dr. Sputnik helps him establish his own company. Melfina (Age: 20?) She is a student and starts attending college daily. Diva (Age: 15) She’s a new character and is a very mysterious girl. She is also Dr. Sputnik’s daughter. Jim feels very close to Diva, and she is the first girl he openly expresses his kindness towards. Dr. Sputnik (Age: 34) He is an exile from the Pyotr Empire, and is a very odd/eccentric character. Dr. Sputnik’s a spacecraft engineer who Gene befriends during his travels. As explained, Gene will get a new ship—his second grappler ship. The Sword of Wind’s long-range navigation capabilities are inferior to the Outlaw Star’s. However, it has a secret and very powerful third mode. Though it is not confirmed yet, Shōji Kawamori is expected to be the designer of the new ship. Are you excited by this? We’re glad to support our fans! • 2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
    2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.
