CHRISTOPH NIEMANN Portfolio & Exhibition List www.christophniemann.com [email protected] Christoph Niemann (* 1970) is an artist, author and animator. His work appears regularly on the covers of The New Yorker, National Geographic and The New York Times Magazine. Christoph Niemann’s art has been subject to numerous museum retrospectives. He has drawn live from the Venice Art Biennale, the Olympic Games in London, and he has sketched the New York City Marathon — while actually running it. He created The New Yorker’s first Augmented Reality Cover as well as a hand drawn 360 degree VR animation for the magazine’s US Open issue. Clients include Hermés, Google, LAMY, and The Museum of Modern Art. NEW YORKER COVER (Selection) Christoph is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale. In 2010, he was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall Of Fame. He is the author of many books, including the monograph “Sunday Sketching” (2016), “WORDS” (2016) and “Souvenir” (2017). His most recent book “Hopes and Dreams” is about a trip to meet the artist David Hockney in Los Angeles. With Jon Huang he created the kids’ apps PETTING ZOO and CHOMP. His work is subject of an episode of “Abstract”, an original Netflix series. For many years, he has been designing covers for THE NEW YORKER, The New York Times, TIME Magazine, WIRED, and ZEITmagazin, creating distinctive adver- tising campaigns, illustrating texts, producing apps, and writing children’s books. The MAK is dedicating an exhibition to this many award-winning master of his craft, showing CHRISTOPH NIEMANN: Drawing the Line in the Works on Paper Room: an overview of his broad creative work with 170 illustrations, graphics, screen prints, pencil and ink drawings, books, apps, and animations. After finishing his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Christoph Nie- mann (* 1970 in Waiblingen, Germany) moved to New York where between 1997 and 2008 he rapidly took his place alongside the graphic design elite. He has since re- turned to Germany and produces drawings from his Berlin studio for clients around the world. His humorous and ironic portrayal of not only serious current affairs but also mundane everyday scenes is unparalleled. Niemann prefers to combine tradi- tional techniques such as pencil and ink with digital tools. However, he also frequent- ly uses unconventional visual tools—such as dough, leaves, toys, paper clips, coat hangers, coffee cups, and salt shakers, which he places in occasionally ludicrous con- texts—to capture his creative ideas.

    23. 09. 2017 — 07. 01. 2018 ZUR AUSSTELLUNG Mit einer Werkschau des Künstlers und Illustrators Christoph Niemann präsen­ tiert die Galerie Stihl Waiblingen einen der gefragtesten Zeichner und Grafik­ designer unserer Zeit. In Waiblingen geboren, studierte Niemann an der Stuttgarter Akademie der Bildenden Künste bei Heinz Edelmann; von 1997 bis 2008 lebte er in New York. Berühmt wurde er durch seine Illustrationen und Coverbilder für Zeitschriften wie The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine oder WIRED und American Illustration; daneben arbeitete Niemann für das Museum of Modern Art und Google. Nach intensiven Jahren im „Big Apple“ kehrte er 2008 mit seiner Familie nach Deutschland zurück. Heute setzt Niemann von Berlin aus treffsicher aktuelle Themen mit un nachahmlichem Humor in Szene. Neben visuellen Kolumnen im ZEITma- gazin oder Covern für die Zeitschrift WELTKUNST gestaltet er freie Projekte und Bücher. Wie Niemann seine Ideen bildnerisch umsetzt, überzeugt und erstaunt immer wieder: Die innovative Erzählweise und seine prägnante, reduzierte Bildsprache lassen vergessen, dass auch die sogenannten glücklichen Zufälle meist hart erarbeitet sind. Auf sympathische Weise thematisiert Niemann in Creative Process die Selbst­­zweifel, die seine Arbeit stetig begleiten.
