THE FIVE BEST FOOD FILMS OF ALL TIME EFF Speech on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 By Chris Palmer Mention plan for evening and EcoComedy winners at end and thank TNC. As I’ve said before, this evening is pretentiously called “An Evening with Chris Palmer.” The Festival asked me to do this event about 12 years ago, and I’ve been doing it annually ever since. Tonight I want to talk about the five best food films of all time. Now everyone please stand up, find someone you’ve never met before, and discuss for two minutes the best food films you’ve ever seen. Go! Ask audience members for their ideas! You may have noticed that I didn’t give you much structure for this question. Does food refer to nutrition, agriculture, factory farming, obesity, food waste, junk food, global food trade, or what? Also, by best food films, was I referring to impact? Did the film influence consumers’ purchasing decisions? Did policy makers take action to address, for example, the wretchedness of the standard American diet? Was there a lot of press coverage? Or by best food films, did I simply mean your favorite? As you can see, selecting the five best food films is complicated. Food is important to me for personal reasons. My father died of prostate cancer, and I have his genes. As I’ve researched and learned about cancer, I’ve become convinced that a plant-based diet is the best way to prevent prostate cancer. At the same time, a plant-based diet is one of the most powerful ways to fight climate change and to stop animal cruelty. -

The foods I served to the bears came from plants in my family’s garden on Maui, where I grew up. The bears enjoyed many feasts outdoors on lava rocks be- side a pond. After they ate, they might go sailing on boats made from hydrangea leaves or banana flowers. A nook in a tree was their woodsy cabin, a pile of rose petals was a perfect pillow, a folded geranium leaf could be a comfortable chair, a found seashell was a luxurious bathtub. -

The focus was diabetes—an epidemic among Native Americans—and how the nutrition research the Physicians Committee had conducted over the years might help. With funding from the Na- tional Institutes of Health, our research team had found that a plant-based diet of whole grains, vegetables, beans, fruits, and other healthy fare could help people with diabetes to lose weight, lower their blood sugars, reduce their medica- tions, and sometimes even make the disease disappear. THINKSTOCK Rosemary from Placitas, New Mexico, called in to the program. The healthy food groups we were discussing resonated with a Native Ameri- can tradition, she said. The tradition, called the Three Sisters, consisted of corn, beans, and—. She could not remember the third group. “Squash,” the host answered. Yes, corn, beans, and squash. These traditional foods kept her ancestors healthy. -

Once we look outside what is known as agri-food studies to research in international development, environmental history, feminist theory, cultural studies and anthropology, it is evident that a large body of research exists relating race to the production, distribution and consumption of food. However, to see how this work actually refers to race often requires reading between the lines. Authors may refer to ‘difference’, ‘alterity’ or ‘Otherness’ instead of race and some are not explicit about the theory of race upon which they draw. Consequently, it is not always evident how race matters to the study of food. This paper’s contribution is to propose how theories of race are being used in this literature. It does so by drawing on the work of geographers, but the paper seeks to engage with research outside the discipline as well. Most literature implicitly relies on the social construction of race to consider representations and performances of race in contexts of eating or producing food. A smaller body of work theorizes racial embodiment as a material process. Explicit engagement with the concept of race and its diverse theoretical foundations is important because it allows scholars to make arguments about how racism shapes food systems, to understand how race changes through food and to consider how food might enable different theorizations of race. -
