    ATPU102.2 Public Theology: Characteristics from the Multireligious Neighborhood Lucinda Allen Mosher* Given the multireligious neighborhood as its context, Lucinda Al- len Mosher argues that Christian public theology is characteristi- cally multidisciplinary, incamational, cognizant of other faiths and cultures, supportive of civil discourse, collaborative, And transformational. Specialists who address the specifically inter- religious concerns of the multifaith neighborhood in faith-rooted terms indeed function as public theologians. Keywords: multifaith, neighborhood, incamational, multidisci- plinary, global, civil, collabortive, transformational, public, dis- course, fear, interfaith Because I am a theologian who specializes in addressing multi- faith concerns, I often speak of the multireligious neighborhood or religious manyness when talking about the context in which I work. These terms name a state of affairs—a construction zone (to borrow an image from Terrence Tilley) calling for a theological response.*1 In the twenty-first century, that response has been answered by scholars from many religious traditions. Esposito, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Muslims in America must move beyond theological discourse and polemics to creating a dynamic apparatus that can promote indigenous and organic Muslim American culture and that accommodates ideological and cultural diversity. Muslims needs to move beyond attempting solely to correct their image and dispel stereotypes. While these are admirable goals, they cannot be the end goal for engaging in the creative arts, because such a narrowly defined, negative vision does not allow for an organic expression of the self. It is imperative that Muslims establish an artistic tradition in America, because to be an American Muslim is a creative process in itself. Laying the foundation for an expressive culture will ensure that Muslims celebrate their humanity and affirm their dignity, and they will then be free from having to define themselves in opposition to something else.     The Social Involvement of Women in Islam By Imam Zaid Shakir www.zaytuna.org One of the persistent attacks against Islam is that it is a religion which stifles the social involvement of women. By social involvement, we mean involvement in those spheres of endeavor which occur outside of the home and impact on the general nature and direction of society. Islam, it is said, desires to divest women of any meaningful social role, to keep them “trapped” in the confines of their homes, under the constant surveillance and control of men. This claim, as we will endeavor to show, does not accurately reflect the fullness of Islamic teachings on this issue. While Islam does advocate a social scheme which places great emphasis on the domestic role of women, it also creates ample space for their meaningful participation in public affairs. The purpose of this article is to examine aspects of that social involvement based on the Qur’an and the prophetic tradition. That examination will be preceded by a brief expose on the fundamental equality of men and women in Islam. The Fundamental Equality of Men and Women in Islam The Qur’an emphasizes that men and women are equal in their physical and metaphysical composition. We read in that regard, “We have surely ennobled the descendants of Adam.” [1] This ennoblement of the human being precludes any claims to gender superiority, or any feelings of inferiority based on physical, or metaphysical composition. Such feelings underlie schemes of gender-based oppression, and have no place in Islam. We also read in the Qur’an, “We have surely created the human in the best of molds.” [2] Again, this process of human creation is not gender specific.

    ABSTRACT AMERICAN BORN IMAMS: NEGOTIATING CLERICAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS by Anas Askar April, 2017 Director of Thesis: Dr. Lee Maril Department of Sociology This inductive, exploratory study seeks to understand in detail the personal perspectives and career paths that American born Imams experience as they become religious leaders. In doing so, this study will examine their objectives and goals for the religious communities in which they reside and are integrally related. More specifically, this study analyzes the responsibilities and expectations with which imams must contend on a daily basis. Symbolic interactionism frames these issues and, at the same time, is the driving force behind an understanding of the imams’ experiences as well as those of other important actors in Muslim communities. Employing structured and in-depth interviews, this convenience sample of American born imams addresses key questions which inductively give rise to three major themes: imams currently receive inadequate training for their positions as religious leaders in their communities; the relationship between the mosque board and an imam can directly reinforce or mitigate against problems within the religious community; and certain fundamental advantages along with disadvantages emerge for imams who are American born.     Desde hace ya cinco años, Madrid cuenta con un Festival Internacional de Documentales que atrae a un gran número de espectadores y es, a la vez, foro y lugar de encuentro para los profesionales del género. Un género, el cine de no ficción, que abarca una enorme variedad de propuestas, desde las puramente estéticas e innovadoras, hasta las que promueven enfoques de mayor calado, que evidencian las más variadas realidades sociales, culturales, artísticas o medioambientales. 6 En su edición de 2008, y como ya es habitual, Documenta tiene su principal foco de interés en su Sección Oficial. En ella, junto a las proyecciones de películas en sus dos formatos, corto y largometraje, en los que prima la originalidad, habrá un concurso de reportajes, que valorará especialmente el tratamiento y la presencia de la actualidad. Pero, además, el festival se nutrirá de sus siempre enriquecedoras secciones informativas. En ellas, destaca el homenaje a la figura de Michelangelo Antonioni, el enigmático cineasta, escritor y pintor italiano, célebre autor de la trilogía La aventura, La noche y El eclipse, que tanto dio que hablar a los cinéfilos españoles a comienzos de los sesenta, y sorprendente creador, más tarde, de Blow-up. It provides a brief overview of the rise of anti-Muslim and anti-Islam sentiment known as “Islamophobia”, and it investigates claims that American Muslims cannot be trusted to be loyal to the United States because of their religion. This research examines American Muslim perspectives on national security discourse regarding terrorism and radicalization, both domestic and foreign, after 9/11. The article argues that it is important to highlight developments, both progressive and conservative, in Muslim communities in the United States over the last 12 years that belie suspicions of widespread anti-American sentiment among Muslims or questions about the loyalty of American Muslims. The article concludes with a discussion of important shifts from a Muslim identity politics that disassociated from American identity and ‘American exceptionalism’ to a position of integration and cultural assimilation.
