2010 RICE OWLS BASEBALL 23 R Coaches & Staff Head Coach Wayne Graham Pick whatever criteria you want to use and you’ll get the same result: Wayne Graham is synonymous with outstanding baseball. Using the year the NCAA Tournament expanded to its current 64-team/Super Regional format (1999), Baseball America recently made a comprehensive study of every Division I program in the country. A lengthy list of key criteria that in- cluded composite win percentage, NCAA Regional bids, trips to the College World Series, winning a national championship, conference champion- ships, All-America honorees, major league draft picks and other factors, were all taken into con- sideration. With a decade worth of data the publication concluded that since 1999 (and with the Graham era firmly in place) Rice has been “the nation’s top-ranked program.” The Rice community had long-known that their head coach, now starting his 19th season at the helm of the program, had made the Owls the nation’s best. Baseball America just made it official. Are all-America selections the criteria for an outstanding coach? Graham has coached 29 dif- ferent Rice players to a total of 42 all-America awards. Perhaps it’s molding a player into a pro prospect. More than 30 former Owls were playing professional baseball in 2009, including nine in the majors and (at one point) three right across town for the .
