Sei que minhas palavras não puderam expressar toda minha gratidão, para todos e todas que me ajudaram neste caminho: muito obrigada. vii RESUMO INFLUÊNCIA DA TRANSFORMAÇÃO DA COBERTURA VEGETAL NA COMUNIDADE DE CARABIDAE (COLEOPTERA) EM DOSSEL DE FLORESTAS DE TERRA FIRME DA AMAZÔNIA EQUATORIANA As florestas de terra firme da Amazônia equatoriana estão sujeitas a dramáticas perturbações, devido principalmente às atividades de extração de madeira na região. Considera-se a família de besouros Carabidae como um potencial grupo de organismos que poderia indicar as transformações destes hábitats. Este estudo foi desenvolvido em florestas Não-alteradas, Medianamente-alteradas e Alteradas, distribuídas entre 19 locais de floresta amazônica de terra firme do Equador. Os carábideos de dossel foram amostradas através da metodologia de fumigação. Para testar se teve influência da transformação das florestas sobre as comunidades de Carabidae de dossel, se estimou a riqueza de espécies em cada tipo de floresta e se analisou a qualidade do ajuste ao modelo log-normal de distribuição de abundância entre espécies. Além disso, se utilizou a metodologia IndVal para detectar espécies indicadoras em cada tipo de floresta. As comunidades estudadas mostraram baixas abundâncias para quase todas as espécies, com poucas espécies que podem ser consideradas dominantes. A riqueza de espécies nas florestas com grau mediano de perturbação foi maior que nos outros tipos de floresta, o que suporta a hipótese do distúrbio intermediário. Contrário à expectativa teórica, nas florestas Não-alteradas a distribuição das abundâncias de Carabidae não se ajustou ao modelo log-normal. Nas florestas Mediamente-alteradas e Alteradas foram encontrados taxa bioindicadores que serviriam como potenciais detectores de mudanças ambientais. Assim, neste estudo, os padrões de diversidade das comunidades de Carabidae de dossel mudam frente às modificações dos seus habitats, o que se observa nas inúmeras formas de resposta das comunidades. Os padrões observados não suportam a hipótese de que a competição interespecífica tenha um papel importante na organização dessa comunidade, e sugerem que a dinâmica de dispersão pode ser um fator importante para a resposta dessa comunidade às alterações ambientais. viii RESUMEN INFLUENCIA DE LA TRANSFORMACIÓN DE LA COBERTURA VEGETAL EN LA COMUNIDAD DE CARABIDAE (COLEOPTERA) EN DOSEL DE BOSQUES DE TIERRA FIRME DE LA AMAZONÍA ECUATORIANA Los bosques de tierra firme de la Amazonía ecuatoriana están sujetos a drámaticas alteraciones, debido principalmente a las actividades de extracción de madera en la región. Se considera a la familia de escarabajos Carabidae como un potencial grupo de organismos que podrían indicar las transformaciones de estos hábitats. Este estudio fue realizado en bosques No-alterados, Medianamente-alterados e Alterados, distribuidos entre 19 localidades de bosques amazónicos de tierra firme del Ecuador, con muestreos de carábidos de dosel colectados a través de la metodología de fumigación. Para testar si hubo influencia de la transformación de los bosques sobre las comunidades de Carabidae de dosel, se estimó la riqueza de especies en cada tipo de bosque y se analizó la bondad de ajuste al modelo log-normal de distribución de abundancia entre especies. Además, se utilizó la metodología IndVal para detectar especies indicadoras en cada tipo de bosque. Las comunidades estudiadas presentaron bajas abundancias para casi todas las especies, con pocas especies que pueden ser consideradas dominantes. La riqueza de especies en bosques con mediano grado de perturbación fue mayor que en los otros tipos de bosque, lo que respalda la hipótesis del disturbio intermedio. La distribución de las abundancias de Carabidae no se ajustó al modelo log-normal en bosques primarios, lo que es contrario a la expectativa teórica. En bosques Medianamente-alterados y Alterados fueron encontrados taxa indicadores que servirían como detectores potenciales de cambios ambientales. Asi, en este estudio, los patrones de diversidad de las comunidades de Carabidae de dosel cambian ante las modificaciones de sus hábitats lo que se observa en las innumerables formas de respuesta de estas comunidades. Los patrones observados no sustentan la hipótesis de que la competición interespecífica tenga un rol importante en la organización de esa comunidad y sugieren que la dinámica de dispersión puede ser un factor importante para la respuesta de esa comunidad a las alteraciones. ix ABSTRACT INFLUENCE OF THE TRANSFORMATION OF VEGETAL COVER ON CARABIDAE (COLEOPTERA) COMMUNITY IN CANOPY OF LOWLAND FOREST OF THE ECUADORIAN AMAZON The lowland forests of the Ecuadorian Amazon are subject to dramatic disturbances, mainly due to logging activities in the region. The family of beetles Carabidae is a group of organisms that potentially could indicate the changes in these habitats. This study was conducted in Undisturbed, Moderately-disturbed and Disturbed forests, distributed among 19 localities of lowland Amazonian forests in Ecuador. Samples of canopy carabids were collected by the fogging method. To test whether there was influence of the forest change in the communities of canopy Carabidae, the species richness was estimated in each forest type and it was analyzed the goodness of fit of species abundances to the log-normal model of species abundance distribution. In addition, the IndVal methodology was used to detect indicator species in each forest type. The communities studied showed low abundances for the majority of species, with few species that could be considered dominant. Species richness in forests with moderate degree of disturbance was greater than in

Pilgrim DEPT, OF ZOOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND Abstract: Anisodactylus binotatus Fabr. 1787 (Col.: Carabidae), an introduced species now established in Canterbury (South Island), New Zealand, is reported for the first time. The literature respecting other carabids sometimes recorded as introduced is reviewed; Ago- nochila binotata (White, 1846), Agonum submetallicum (White, 1846), Hypharpax australasiae (Dejean, 1829) and Pentagonica vittipennis Chaudoir, 1877 are shown to be better considered as endemic to the Australia - New Zealand area. Other species are classed as either native to New Zealand, clearly introduced though not all established, or of doubtful occurrence in New Zealand. Introduction: The Carabidae of New Zealand are predominantly endemic species, but a small number of exotic species has been recorded. This paper reports a further introduc­ tion to the carabid fauna of this country and concludes with a survey of recorded exotic Carabidae in New Zealand. Specimens of the newly-recorded species were collected in domestic gardens in Christ­ church, and were included in a collection sent for identification to Dr. E. B. Britton, British Museum (Nat.     RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots.

Messer1 Abstract Sixteen species are added to the checklist of Wisconsin Geadephaga. Of these, seven species are reported here as new to Wisconsin. Nine taxa from the list are affected by new information resulting in the removal of six names. The Eurasian beetle Harpalus rubripes was discovered as early as 2009 on annu- ally surveyed beaches along Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin. This discovery greatly extends the species distribution westward from its presence in northeastern North America where it was first recorded in 1981. ____________________ There appears no end to the current accelerated pace of published faunal records and regional checklists. The vast majority of such endeavors are based arbitrarily on political geographic units rather than on well-defined natural systems. The scientific and esthetic allure of the ground beetles has contrib- uted greatly to the surge in publications (e.g., Erwin 2007, 2011; Erwin and Pearson 2008) on Western Hemisphere Caraboidea, the catalogue of North American Geadephaga (Bousquet 2012), and the concerted effort among users of BugGuide.net to supplement the latter catalogue by archiving new records at http://bugguide.net/node/view/744417. Bousquet (2012) updated all 2678 valid North American Geadephaga species-group taxa along with consolidating everything known about their geographic-political distributions. The present contribution adheres to Bous- quet’s nomenclature, classification, and phylogenetic order of the tribes. The relevant hierarchal classification descends according to order Coleoptera: suborder Adephaga: superfamily Caraboidea = Geadephaga: families Trachy- pachidae, Rhysodidae, and Carabidae.

    Section IV – Guideline for the Texas Priority Species List Associated Tables The Texas Priority Species List……………..733 Introduction For many years the management and conservation of wildlife species has focused on the individual animal or population of interest. Many times, directing research and conservation plans toward individual species also benefits incidental species; sometimes entire ecosystems. Unfortunately, there are times when highly focused research and conservation of particular species can also harm peripheral species and their habitats. Management that is focused on entire habitats or communities would decrease the possibility of harming those incidental species or their habitats. A holistic management approach would potentially allow species within a community to take care of themselves (Savory 1988); however, the study of particular species of concern is still necessary due to the smaller scale at which individuals are studied. Until we understand all of the parts that make up the whole can we then focus more on the habitat management approach to conservation. Species Conservation In terms of species diversity, Texas is considered the second most diverse state in the Union. Texas has the highest number of bird and reptile taxon and is second in number of plants and mammals in the United States (NatureServe 2002). There have been over 600 species of bird that have been identified within the borders of Texas and 184 known species of mammal, including marine species that inhabit Texas’ coastal waters (Schmidly 2004). It is estimated that approximately 29,000 species of insect in Texas take up residence in every conceivable habitat, including rocky outcroppings, pitcher plant bogs, and on individual species of plants (Riley in publication).

GENERA OF THE SUBTRIBE METALLICINA AND CLASSIFICATION, RECONSTRUCTED PHYLOGENY AND GEOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF THE SPECIES OF EUPROCTINUS LENG AND MUTCHLER (COLEOPTERA: CARABIDAE: LEBIINI) Danny Shpeley Department of Entomology University of Alberta Edmonton, Alberta Quaestiones Entomologicae Canada T6G 2E3 22: 261-349 1986 ABSTRACT The New World lebiine genus Euproctinus Leng & Mutchler (type-species - Euproctus fasciatus Solier) is removed from the subtribe Calleidina and placed in the subtribe Metallicina. A reconstructed phytogeny of this subtribe places the genera in the sequence, Parena-Metallica-Pachycallida-Euproctinus, with the ancestor of Euproctinus and that of the other three genera as sister groups. Adults of Euproctinus are readily distinguished by a ventral sensory pit on each of antennomeres 5-11. These pits also occur in the remaining metallicine genera, as well as the Old World genus Celaenephes Schmidt-Gobel, and some of the New World species o/Coptodera Dejean. Keys distinguish the two subgenera and 16 of 17 species of Euproctinus, and each taxon is characterized in terms of structural features of adults, habitat, geographical distribution, chorological affinities, and phylogenetic relationships. The geographical range of Euproctinus extends from central Chile to southern United States and Cuba. In Mexico, species of Euproctinus live from sea level to moderately high elevation. A new species of the lebiine genus Coptodera Dejean, 1825 is described from Tanimbar Islands: Coptodera bastai sp. nov. It belongs to a group of small species which occur in the Papuan Subregion of Australian Region. The species is differentiated from related species in a key. For comparison the male genitalia of the nearest related species C. fasciolata (MacLeay, 1887) are figured. INTRODUCTION The genus Coptodera Dejean, 1825 belongs to the lebiine subtribe Pericalina which is characterized by narrow and not excised 4th tarsomeres, denticulate tarsal claws, elongate labrum, and elongate female gonocoxites 2 which bear a dorso-median ensiform seta and usually two or three ventro-lateral ensiform setae. The genus is further characterized by a rather depressed body and wide pronotum, and by presence of 2-4 distinctly impressed setiferous punctures on the 3rd elytral interval. Species of Coptodera usually are small to medium sized, rather broad beetles having large, protruding eyes. Most species possess an intricate colour pattern on their elytra, usually consisting of a number of light spots or lines, and sometimes they even bear a metallic lustre. However, these patterns can vary to a considerable degree within species. Only rather few species are unicolourous piceous or black. The genus is very rich in species and is widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of all continents except Europe, with the subgenus Coptoderina Jeannel, 1949 ranging from Africa through southern and eastern Asia into the Papuan Subregion of the Australian Region.
