Pilgrim DEPT, OF ZOOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY, NEW ZEALAND Abstract: Anisodactylus binotatus Fabr. 1787 (Col.: Carabidae), an introduced species now established in Canterbury (South Island), New Zealand, is reported for the first time. The literature respecting other carabids sometimes recorded as introduced is reviewed; Ago- nochila binotata (White, 1846), Agonum submetallicum (White, 1846), Hypharpax australasiae (Dejean, 1829) and Pentagonica vittipennis Chaudoir, 1877 are shown to be better considered as endemic to the Australia - New Zealand area. Other species are classed as either native to New Zealand, clearly introduced though not all established, or of doubtful occurrence in New Zealand. Introduction: The Carabidae of New Zealand are predominantly endemic species, but a small number of exotic species has been recorded. This paper reports a further introduc tion to the carabid fauna of this country and concludes with a survey of recorded exotic Carabidae in New Zealand. Specimens of the newly-recorded species were collected in domestic gardens in Christ church, and were included in a collection sent for identification to Dr. E. B. Britton, British Museum (Nat. Hist.), who kindly drew the writer's attention to the fact that they were so far unreported from New Zealand. Description of adult (from New Zealand specimens) Fig. 1. A species list, identification key, short diagnoses and illustrations of all taxa are given. Brief information on known ecological preferences of species is given. INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species. -

New records of Cleopomiarus distinctus Boheman, 1845 (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) and Stricticollis tobias Marseul, 1879 (Coleoptera, Anthicidae) from Norway. Norwegian Journal of Entomology 65, 175–182. Two new beetle species for Norway were recorded from field surveys in power-line clearings located in predominantly forested areas in Southeastern Norway; Cleopomiarus distinctus Boheman, 1845 (Curculionidae), and Stricticollis tobias Marseul, 1879 (Anthicidae). A total of 81 specimens of the weevil C. distinctus, were found across four sites in Buskerud over the course of three years (2013–2015). C. distinctus has never been recorded in Scandinavia previously. Three specimens of the ant-like flower beetle S. tobias, were found at two sites in Hedmark in 2015. S. tobias has a wide distribution in other Nordic countries and has been recognized as a “doorstep-species” to Norway from Sweden. The biology of the two species are presented and the potential distribution of the species are discussed. The whole region is characterized by common geomorphologic features, constituting three different natural environments. In the Atlantic east predominates extensive lowlands cut by a multitude of branched rivers. They cover a karstic underground formed by unfolded limestone. -

The Eurasian beetle Harpalus rubripes was discovered as early as 2009 on annu- ally surveyed beaches along Lake Michigan in southeastern Wisconsin. -

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots. -

Kaufman2 Introduction Taxonomy and Synonymy The hister beetle Carcinops pumilio (Erichson) is a predator The taxonomic history of this hister beetle is complicated and natural enemy of the pestiferous house fly, Musca and marked by confusion of the scientific names Carcinops domestica Linnaeus (Figure 1). Carcinops pumilio has a pumilio (Erichson) and Carcinops quattuordecims- broad world distribution and is associated with wild bird triata (Stephens) that stems from uncertainty surrounding nests and bat guano piles. This species’ ability to limit house the publication dates of these. However, Stephens’s (1835) name Carcinops quattuordeci- mstriata, described from England and referring to the same organism, was considered the senior synonym (i.e., it was thought to be the older name) and the valid name for the species because it was thought to have been described before Carcinops pumilio (Erichson). -
