Unpublished © Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat / Georges Binder The “International” Skyscraper: Observations While using tall buildings data, the following paper aims to show trends and shifts relating to building use and new locations accommodating high-rise buildings. After decades of the American office building being dominate, in the last twelve years we have observed a gradual but major shift from office use to residential and mixed-use for Tall Buildings, and from North America to Asia. The turn of the millennium has also seen major changes in the use of buildings in cities having the longest experience with Tall Buildings. Chicago is witnessing a series of office buildings being transformed into residential or mixed-use buildings, a phenomenon also occurring on a large scale in New York. In midtown Manhattan of New York City we note the transformation of major hotels into residential projects. The transformation of landmark projects in midtown New York City is making an impact, but it is not at all comparable to the number of new projects being built in Asia. When conceiving new projects, we should perhaps bear in mind that, in due time, these will also experience major shifts in uses and we should plan for this in advance. -

Demolition of guyed masts is usually carried out by cutting down some of the supporting guy cables using an explosive in such a way that the mast can fall into the desired direction. Without the cable supports, guyed tubular masts are very slender structures which are susceptible to local buckling based on the internal force distribution. If this local buckling occurs at the early stage of the demolition processes, it can cause uncertainty in the failure mechanism. )e risk of undesirable demolition outcome due to this uncertainty can be mitigated by using controlled detonation setups. In this paper, a sensitivity analysis is presented using a case study to determine the influence of the explosive detonation time on the collapse development and pattern of the guyed mast. )en, the results of the sensitivity analysis are systematically categorized using cluster analysis to show possible types of collapse regimes which can be used to setup a controlled demolition scheme. -

GOALSSTADIUM DISTRICT CONCEPT PLAN DECEMBER 2012 Washington State Major League Baseball Stadium Public Facilities District Washington State Public Stadium Authority Dear Friends and Neighbors: As members of the two volunteer public boards created to manage and protect the public’s investment in Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field and Event Center, we are pleased to offer for your consideration this Stadium District Concept Plan. The plan represents our vision for what a Stadium District might become, over a ten-year period and beyond, to dramatically and positively impact its neighborhood. The plan was prepared in the context of breathtaking changes now underway for the central downtown waterfront, major new development in the North Lot at CenturyLink Field, and other opportunities in the historic neighborhoods of Pioneer Square, Chinatown/ International District, and SODO. The introduction of a possible new arena in the District adds to the significance of our effort. What we offer is not a finished plan or a fixed blueprint for the future. It is an initial concept that the Public Stadium Authority and Public Facilities District, along with the Seattle Mariners, Seahawks, and Sounders FC believe to be the essential elements of a successful stadium district—one that is economically successful, safe, desirable, innovative, inviting and irresistibly fun to live in and visit. This Stadium District Concept Plan states our core values and the guiding principles adopted by both boards after completing several workshops attended by members of the two boards and representatives of the three teams. Our work was facilitated, and the plan was drafted, by ZGF Architects LLP and AECOM. -

This paper reviews the evolution of tall building’s structural systems and the technological driving force behind tall building developments. For the primary structural systems, a new classification – interior structures and exterior structures – is presented. While most representative structural systems for tall buildings are discussed, the emphasis in this review paper is on current trends such as outrigger systems and diagrid structures. Auxiliary damping systems controlling building motion are also discussed. Further, contemporary “out-of-the-box” architectural design trends, such as aerodynamic and twisted forms, which directly or indirectly affect the structural performance of tall buildings, are reviewed. Finally, the future of structural developments in tall buildings is envisioned briefly. We explore the ancient idea of Harmony and Beauty and the historical confidence in the logarithmic spiral as the symbol of perfection in an un- built project for a 565 m (1,854 ft) high skyscraper that was supposed to be built on the tip of Manhattan, NYC. The role of geometry is no more exploited as an instrument for controlling architectural form, but for its liberation: the project for a helicoidal skyscraper consisted of a succession of warped wings developed on the layout of the logarithmic spiral. The helicoidal shape, works better than the others in splitting up the force of the wind in resistance, has a positive influence on the stability of the building and is the result of a strong design theory wondering about the power of invention, the power of geometry, the power of relationships among numbers, and finally the beauty of (deriving from) mathematics (in Architecture). -

Bring comfortable shoes! The culinary scene is varied. Most people think seafood, and that’s fine, but with its location on the Pacific Rim, use this opportunity to sample flavors not common in other parts of the country. Thai, Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese cuisines are common and wonderful! It does rain here. However, it’s rarely all day and almost never hard enough to actually affect most plans. Many people find layers the most comfortable way to deal with our changing weather conditions. It doesn’t rain ALL the time. Summers, after about July 5th, are usually warm and mostly dry. Starbucks is on every corner. Don’t get sucked in. You can have Starbucks at home. Seattle is a coffee-crazed city and there are numerous small shops and roasters that will give you a memorable cup of coffee, so explore. Moore Coffee, Cherry Street, and Elm Coffee Roasters are all centrally located and wonderful, and just a small sample of the excellent coffee this town has to offer. Insider’s Tip: Many of the activities listed here are covered under Seattle’s CityPass program. Save money and time by purchasing in advance! HOW TO GET AROUND Seattle is super easy to navigate, and for ease and to save money, we don’t recommend a rental car for our downtown, belltown, and capitol hill homes.
