PRESIDENT’S REPORT President’s Report for U3A Redlands District June Newsletter

President Julie is overseas on a well-deserved holiday, enjoying the English and European summer. Meanwhile, winter has come to – we seemed to have an endless summer and have skipped autumn altogether. We hope that you have enjoyed your classes and activities for Term 2. Remember to check our website regularly to keep up to date with new courses. Some of the new courses for Term 3 are Introduction to Music, Thai Cooking, Buying & Selling Online, and Laughter Club is returning. Why not also check out our new Facebook page at U3A Redlands District? This will give you up to date news on our U3A and interesting information for Seniors.

Another avenue for information is the Tutor News sheet which your Tutors receive each month. Thank you to the Tutors for sharing this with their students – through this, we have been able to find volunteers for a Venue Coordinator, assistance with MYOB and also with AV equipment at Life in Australia. We haven’t yet found a Newsletter Editor to take over from Doreen at the end of the year – if you would like to help, please phone the office and Doreen will be happy to have you on board.

Several Redlands members attended the U3A Network Qld State Conference on 2nd and 3rd of June at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs. The conference was hosted by U3A Sunshine Coast and was a special celebration for their 30th birthday. A full report on the conference will be posted on the Network website u3aqld.org.au and in the upcoming edition of Grey Matters.

We have a very busy time coming up for Seniors Week in August (14th to 21st). U3A Redlands members will provide helpers at water stations for the Seniors Walk on Sunday, a Golf Day (with prizes!) will be held on Monday, a free concert “Redland Variety Showcase” on Tuesday afternoon at RPAC, “Back to School” on Wednesday, and an information table at Stockland on Friday.

Enjoy your classes and meeting old and new friends during Term 3. Iris Murray (Secretary) on behalf of Julie Porteous – President – ([email protected])

Please Note -Smoking is not allowed on the school premises. Please Remember- that U3A is an apolitical and non-denominational organisation.

Redlands U3A Choir Annual Concert Directed by Margaret Ward

Saturday September 10th at 2pm at Star of the Sea Parish Hall

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on. 7

The new Network Committee was elected at their AGM held at the State Conference on the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations to Julie Porteous who is the new President and Iris Murray who is the new Secretary.
