New Release Information Media Contact NEW RELEASE INFORMATION MENDELSSOHN: THE COMPLETE WORKS FOR CELLO AND PIANO MARIE MACLEOD, CELLO MARTIN STURFÅLT, PIANO CD RELEASE DATE: 3 February 2014 Marie Macleod and Martin Sturfålt are a wonderfully talented cello and piano recital duo who have been performing together since 2003, when they were still students at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Having played hundreds of concerts together, including most of the standard works from the classical and romantic eras alongside contemporary music, they decided to make this live recording of Mendelssohn’s complete works for cello and piano. The result is a thrilling account of the repertoire, brilliantly performed and wonderfully recorded. The disc stands as a testament to the performances that have been heard by audiences around the UK (Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Bridgewater Hall), and in Sweden, Holland and Germany. She is the cellist in the award winning Lendvai String Trio who regularly perform at major European concert halls. In 2009 the Lendvai String Trio was selected for the Concertgebouw’s Young Artist Series in Amsterdam. Between 2006 and 2008 Marie was principal cellist of the Västerås Sinfonietta in Sweden, and in 2009 she was appointed cellist in Ensemble 360. She enjoys regular chamber music collaborations with artists such as Pekka Kuusisto, Alexei Ogrintchouk, Natalie Clein, Nicholas Daniel, Andrew Kennedy, Ailish Tynan, Angela Hewitt, Tasmin Little, Charles Owen and Alison Balsom. She studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she was awarded the prestigious Concert Recital Diploma. Martin Sturfält enjoys a busy international career as a concerto soloist and recitalist, and is also a passionate chamber musician. In December 2009 Sweden’s main classical music magazine Opus placed Martin as number five in their New Year’s list of the most significant Swedish musicians. He studied at the Stockholm Royal College of Music and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, and has since performed extensively throughout Scandinavia, UK and the rest of Europe, as well as in Asia and the USA. His father, Franz Joseph, was principal French horn at the Bavarian Court Opera and a particular favourite (musically, at least) of Richard Wagner – although he detested both ‘the Master’ and his music. He nevertheless played in the premieres of four major Wagner operas, including the first two instalments of the Ring Cycle (Das Rheingold and Die Walküre). Although Franz was not the easiest of men, money was never a problem at home and music was everywhere, enabling the young Strauss to develop his almost supernatural talent in an entirely natural way. In this respect, his early development was closer to the wunderkind Mendelssohn’s than the ceaseless international parading of talent that Strauss’s beloved Mozart had to endure. Although he had piano and violin lessons from an early age, Strauss never became an instrumental virtuoso – his true destiny lay as a conductor and, most especially, a composer.

    Welcome to the 36th Season of Ray Law Concerts at Leamington Hastings Dear Music Lover, It is with pleasure that I am writing to tell you about the coming series of concerts. Once again we have invited some favourite musicians to return, they are all people who never fail to impress with the sheer quality of their music making and presentation. Some of them like Emma Johnson, Nicholas Daniel and Julius Drake are old friends, while others, are making their first return visit to us having given exciting performances here a couple of years ago. At Christmas we will welcome Laudate, a superb mixed voice choir conducted by Howard Ionascu which has not been here before. I have asked for a Christmas Celebration in words and music and having heard several of their CDs including ‘On Christmas Night’ I think you will enjoy this choir immensely. We begin the series with Nicholas Daniel accompanied by Julius Drake. Their total rapport in performance stems from inspired musicianship and the meeting of minds of two old friends. In June the Barkham Harp Quartet are returning to play again by popular request. These talented young women with their harps make a wonderful sound and also introduce their music with enthusiasm and panache. In July the Yehudi Menuhin School Orchestra pays us its bi-annual visit. It is always a joy to hear these youthful musicians who give their all in performance and are superbly conducted by Malcolm Singer. As time goes by it is interesting to follow the development and careers of the most outstanding such as Tasmin Little, Mary Wu and more recently Alina Ibragimova.

Our Schumann Song Series will explore in depth the great composer’s extraordinary output, which is amongst the most rewarding within the entire Lieder tradition. I am very pleased to welcome Florian Boesch who, with Malcolm Martineau, will open the series. As the season progresses, we will be focusing on Robert Schumann’s highly personal art with the Elias String Quartet interpreting his great string quartets. Whether as classical violinist or improviser, composer or orchestral director, Pekka Kuusisto certainly Director’s enlivens the musical scene with levels of energy and engagement few can match. While maintaining local support, filming opens the Festival up to a new audience worldwide for a truly unique experience, going behind the scenes at one of Britain’s most celebrated historic houses, the childhood home of Elizabeth I.
