Abstract The Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank, the first wetlands mitigation bank in the Blue Ridge Province of North Carolina, was created to compensate for losses resulting from highway projects in western North Carolina. The overall objective for the Tulula Wetlands Mitigation Bank has been to restore the functional and structural characteristics of the wetlands. Specific ecological restoration objectives of this Phase I study included: 1) reestablishing site hydrology by realigning the stream channel and filling drainage ditches; 2) recontouring the floodplain by removing spoil that resulted from creation of the golf ponds and dredging of the creek; 3) improving breeding habitat for amphibians by constructing vernal ponds; and 4) reestablishing floodplain and fen plant communities. -

The Nikwasi Indian Mound
The Nikwasi Indian Mound The Nikwasi Indian Mound is the last remnant of a Cherokee town of the same name which once stood here on the banks of the Little Tennessee River. The Cherokee Nation towns were divided into Lower, Middle, and Over the Hill Towns. The Middle Towns, of which Nikwasi was one, were found every few miles along the Little Tennessee and its tributaries from its headwaters to the Smokies. While the mound was probably built during the earlier Mississippian Culture, it was the spiritual center of the area. A Council House, or Town House, used for councils, religious ceremonies, and general meetings, was located on top the mound, and the ever-burning sacred fire, which the Cherokee had kept burning since the beginning of their culture, was located there. Thus the mound was a most revered site. The town of Nikwasi was a "white", or peace, town. It was believed that the Nunne'hi, the spirit people, lived under this mound. When James Mooney was studying the legends of the Cherokee for the Smithsonian in 1887 - 1890, he was told the legend of these Spirit Defenders of Nikwasi by an old medicine man name Swimmer. Today it stands as a stately and silent reminder of a time, a culture, and a people of a bygone era. The mound has never been excavated for any reason, agricultural, archeological, or commercial. It stands at near its original height. One cannot truly experience the mound by merely driving by. One must stand at the base to appreciate the size and grace of Nikwasi, and try to envision a time from the past when the mound was surrounded not by busy 21st century traffic and businesses, but by fields, orchards, and a people who lived in complete harmony with the land and the river. -

Rooted In the Mountains Program Schedule Rooted in the mountains is an annual symposium that intersects traditional/local knowledge with health and environmental issues. Participants will go away with a new sense of urgency and tools to use in valuing our common ground. This year’s theme is duyuk’ dv’ I, an important and essential Cherokee concept that translates to “the correct way” or the “right way.” Cherokee culture attuned itself to its understanding of the science that is life. Cherokees understood that life is at its core, an energy that moves forward. The law of that science grows out of the knowledge of systems working together in a correct or right way. Duyuk’ dv’ I is the natural order of things, it is a way, a road, that is Native Science which brings meaning to life and purpose in how we interact. It is a consciousness of being that is rooted in where you come from, which determines who you are. “We believe that life is a gift and we take care of it out of gratitude. Being disconnected is contrary to duyuk’ dv’ I because the ‘correct way’ is being connected to all else and all others.” (T. Belt) Meeting to be held at the Blue Ridge Conference Room on main campus. The film brings attention to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians as they fight to revitalize their language. The Cherokee Indians have been living in the southern Appalachian Mountains since at least 1000 CE. Later named one of the “Five Civilized Tribes,” they, along with the Choctaws, Chickasaws, Creeks, and Seminoles, maintained complex agrarian civilizations in what is now the Southeastern United States even as colonial settlers encroached on their ancestral homes. Despite boasting a literacy rate well above that of the European Americans throughout the 19th century and producing the Cherokee Phoenix, one of the earliest newspapers in North Carolina, the Cherokee language became critically endangered in the 20th century mostly as a result of government policies. Among the most destructive policies was the creation of Indian Boarding Schools, which separated children from their culture and punished them for speaking their heritage language. This movement was spurred by Captain Richard H. Pratt, who described the aim of the so-called civilization program by noting his belief that “A great general has said that the only good Indian is a dead one…In a sense, I agree with the sentiment, but only in this: that all the Indian there is in the race should be dead. -

National Park Service Teaching with Historic Places U.S. Department of the Interior The Battle of Horseshoe Bend: Collision of Cultures The Battle of Horseshoe Bend: Collision of Cultures (Horseshoe Bend National Military Park) Today the Tallapoosa River quietly winds its way through east-central Alabama, its banks edged by the remnants of the forest that once covered the Southeast. About halfway down its 270-mile run to the southwest, the river curls back on itself to form a peninsula. The land defined by this "horseshoe bend" covers about 100 wooded acres; a finger of high ground points down its center, and an island stands sentinel on its west side. This tranquil setting belies the violence that cut through Horseshoe Bend on March 27, 1814. On the peninsula stood 1,000 American Indian warriors, members of the tribe European Americans knew as the Creek. These men, along with 350 women and children, had arrived over the previous six months in search of refuge. Many had been part of a series of costly battles during the past year, all fought in an attempt to regain the autonomy the Indians had held before the arrival of European Americans. Surrounding the Creek were forces led by future President Andrew Jackson, then a major general of the Tennessee Militia. The core of his force was 2,600 European American soldiers, most of whom hoped that a victory would open native land to European American settlement. Yet this fight was not simply European American versus American Indian: on Jackson's side were 600 "friendly" Indians, including 100 Creek. -

The Indians of East Alabama and the Place Names They Left Behind
THE INDIANS OF EAST ALABAMA AND THE PLACE NAMES THEY LEFT BEHIND BY DON C. EAST INTRODUCTION When new folks move to Lake Wedowee, some of the first questions they ask are: “what is the meaning of names like Wedowee and Hajohatchee?” and “what Indian languages do the names Wehadkee and Fixico come from?” Many of us locals have been asked many times “how do you pronounce the name of (put in your own local town bearing an Indian name) town?” All of us have heard questions like these before, probably many times. It turns out that there is a good reason we east Alabama natives have heard such questions more often than the residents of other areas in Alabama. Of the total of 231 Indian place names listed for the state of Alabama in a modern publication, 135 of them are found in 18 counties of east Alabama. Put in other words, 58.4% of Alabama’s Indian place names are concentrated in only 26.8% of it’s counties! We indeed live in a region that is rich with American Indian history. In fact, the boundaries of the last lands assigned to the large and powerful Creek Indian tribe by the treaty at Fort Jackson after the Red Stick War of 1813-14, were almost identical to the borders of what is known as the "Sunrise Region" in east central Alabama. These Indian names are relics, like the flint arrowheads and other artifacts we often find in our area. These names are traces of past peoples and their cultures; people discovered by foreign explorers, infiltrated by early American traders and settlers, and eventually forcefully moved from their lands. -

Former UST Site Reused As Greenspace And Access To Ancient Ceremonial Nikwasi Mound In North Carolina A former underground storage tank (UST) site fronting on the Little Tennessee River in Franklin, NC is now reused as an attractive greenspace with parking and Main Street access to the Nikwasi Mound. This ancient Mississippian period (800-1600 CE) ceremonial mound was later the center of the Cherokee Town of Nikwasi. Across the street from the Mound, the reused UST site, which is now owned by the Mainspring Conservation Trust, contains walkways leading to the riverfront, new native plantings, a rain garden, and repurposed remediation activities materials that serve as educational art pieces and functional reminders of the site’s environmental legacy. Work is ongoing to determine cleanup activities and reuse for another adjacent site with petroleum groundwater contamination. Future reuse could include a greenspace connecting the existing 4.5-mile Little Tennessee River Greenway directly to the Nikwasi Mound. Reusing the site this way would result in a continuous pathway leading from the existing riverfront greenway to a planned observation deck and new education path around the Mound itself. As other properties surrounding the Nikwasi Mound become available, the Mainspring Conservation Trust will work with several partners to further plans for eventually having a Cherokee Heritage interpretive center adjacent to the Mound.
