Whether dancing on stage, in school, or in the street, Ballet Hispánico creates a space where few institutions are breaking ground. The organization’s founder, National Medal of Arts recipient Tina Ramirez, sought to give voice to the Hispanic experience and break through stereotypes. Today, Ballet Hispánico is led by Eduardo Vilaro, an acclaimed choreographer and former member of the Company, whose vision of social equity, cultural identity, and quality arts education for all drives its programs. Ballet Hispánico, a role model in and for the Latino community, is inspiring creativity and social awareness in our neighborhoods and across the country by providing access to arts education. Among this year’s Momentum works: Matthew Lovegood’s French Songs (left); Erika Overturff’s Connemara; and Overturff’s Rhapsody in Blue. More full-resolution photos... NEW BRAND, NEW DANCERS, NEW WORKS IN AMERICAN MIDWEST BALLET'S MOMENTUM OMAHA — The freshly rebranded American Midwest Ballet — formerly known as Ballet Nebraska — will open its ninth season in October with a fresh crop of works, artistic director Erika Overturff said. “Our mixed repertory program, Momentum, has been a must-see since our earliest seasons, because it showcases the exciting range of dance as an expressive art,” Overturff said. “For its first American Midwest Ballet edition, we're mixing some past favorites with works that will be new experiences for our audiences.” Headlining the selection is Overturff's Rhapsody in Blue, to the iconic music of George Gershwin. “When I choreographed it, I listened to the music many times until I knew all of the rhythms and notes by heart,” Overturff said. “The music is so expressive; within one piece it conveys so many different moods. It is flirty, jazzy, big and bold, whiny and sad, sweeping and romantic, daring and quick – lots of personality! “I see the dancers as a personification of the musical notes themselves, as if they floated out of the instruments and onto the stage for us to see.” ! Among the program’s other highlights are three guest works: Frank Chaves’ sultry, flirtatious At Last, is a duet set to lyrics sung by the incomparable Etta James.

Amy Seiwert’s Imagery Presents: SKETCH 3: Expectations world premiere ballets by Marc Brew Val Caniparoli Amy Seiwert July 25–28, 2013 ODC Theater 3153 17th Street San Francisco, CA 94110 All logo and bubble photography by David DeSilva in collaboration with Bubble Master Sterling Johnson Dear Patron: Thank you so much for choosing to come to Amy Seiwert’s Imagery’s SKETCH 3. By doing so, you have supported Live Arts which, in and of itself, is important. But more than that, you have chosen to participate in a unique program. Each year, Amy identi"es a theme and invites stunning choreographers that she thinks have a pertinent message to create dances for Bay Area audiences — dances and choreographers that we wouldn’t, otherwise, be exposed to. Last year, she brought in female choreographers to present their individual message, commenting on the lack of female choreographers in the ballet "eld. This year, she has chosen to focus on process, shifting the focus from who makes the ballets, to how ballets are being made, as a theme. To accomplish this she invited a marvelous local choreographer familiar to Bay Area audiences through San Francisco Ballet, Val Caniparoli, as well as a renowned Australian choreographer, Marc Brew. And, we can thrill to a new o#ering by Amy herself. Michael Smuin once introduced Amy’s choreography by saying: “Amy has more originality in 25 seconds of work than most choreographers have in their entire work.” The SKETCH series is becoming a staple of mid-summer dance in San Francisco... but it won’t be able to continue without your generous support.
