The Purposes of Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association: Development, Literature, Performance, and Pedagogy 1973-2012 (2013) Directed by Dr SMITH, ANDREW MCLANE, DMA. The Purposes of Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association: Development, Literature, Performance, and Pedagogy 1973-2012 (2013) Directed by Dr. Dennis AsKew. 171 pp. The purpose of this project was to document the purposes of Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association, currently known as the International Tuba Euphonium Association, from 1973-2012, and to analyze the effectiveness of the organization in fulfilling the purposes found in its original mission statement. A short history of the organization, along with definitions of the parameters of the project is included. The primary print publication of the organization, the Journal, was examined for evidence of the organization’s fulfillment of its mission statement. The original mission statement of the organization was very specific to the written goals of the organization, allowing the writers of articles for the Journal to have clearly defined areas of focus. The articles found within the Journal were examined and categorized into one or more of the purposes found in the mission statement. The results of this research demonstrate that TUBA/ITEA was successful in fulfilling the purposes found in the organization’s original mission statement. The articles also reflect that the quantity and quality of articles generally grew over the decades. Further, it is recognized that the organization was able to bring about a more scholarly approach to fulfilling its mission statement. These two outcomes indicate that the members of the tuba and euphonium community will benefit from a documented history of the Journal of the organization. Two areas for further study were identified. First, there were many compositions that were freely distributed with the Journal, known as the “Gem Series.” An opportunity exists for scholarly review and analysis of these compositions. Second, an all-inclusive history of the organization would be beneficial, which would include a full listing of personnel involved in leadership positions throughout the organization’s history. Throughout its history, the organization was able to foster improvements in the literature, performance, pedagogy, and instrument construction of the low brass community. ITEA’s efforts to improve the community were made possible because of the conferences, commissions, and journals in which the organization participated. The concept of this project was twofold. First, to document the purposes of Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association, currently known as the International Tuba Euphonium Association, from 1973-2012. Second, to analyze the effectiveness of the organization in fulfilling the purposes found in its original mission statement. By documenting the history of TUBA/ITEA through the publications of the organization, the members of the tuba and euphonium community will be able to better understand the considerable development, literature, performance, and pedagogy which have occurred during the last forty years, primarily due to the efforts of TUBA/ITEA. The complete list of articles reviewed are located in Appendix A, B, and C. The results of categorization demonstrate that the organization TUBA/ITEA was successful in fulfilling the original purposes of its mission statement. 2 For this document, 150 journals of TUBA/ITEA were examined, and 1,424 articles were reviewed and categorized into one or more of four purposes: development, literature, pedagogy and performance. Definitions of categorization and how articles were selected for review were included in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, a brief history and background of TUBA and ITEA is presented. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 summarize the selected majority of articles written in specific decades. The review of articles in this document is not intended to be an all-inclusive history of TUBA/ITEA, nor a replacement for reading the journals of

    113 THE BRASS INSTRUMENT COLLECTION OF THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART IN NEW YORK HERBERT HEYDE The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses a large, comprehensive collection of musical instruments. Managed by one of seventeen curatorial departments, the Musical Instruments Department, it contains approximately 4,500 instruments. Roughly forty percent of them are of western, the rest of non-western origin. The Egyptian, Islamic, Arms and Armor, Medieval Departments, and a few other departments, house some additional instruments. Another resource consists of iconographic representations of musical instruments that are to be found in almost all departments. They are included in The Performing Arts Index of RIdIM.1 The western brass, or “lip-vibrated” instruments of the Musical Instruments Department amount to only 283 items—an indication that this fi eld was never a priority of the museum’s collecting activities. The basis of The Metropolitan Museum of Art musical instruments collection was provided by Mary Elisabeth Adams Brown (1842-1918), who donated her collection from 1889 in successive installments in the name of her husband, John Crosby Brown. Beginning with 276 instruments in 1889, the gift ultimately amounted to more than 3400 items in 1918. To be precise, before Brown’s donation there was already a collection of forty-four instruments in the museum, given by Joseph William Drexel (1833-1888), a wealthy amateur musician and philanthropist in New York. The Brown family, of British origin, engaged in international banking and graciously supported American culture, including education and theology. Besides musical instruments, Mrs. Brown collected lace, embroidery, and portraits of musicians, which are now kept in the Prints and Drawings Department of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.2 A few years after the Crosby Brown collection began to arrive in 1889, the museum provided gallery space for its public display.

Mit dabei waren: Eyal Talmudi (Balkan Beat Box), Boom Pam, Digital Me, The Ramirez Brothers, The Apples with Yoram Arbel, Markey Funk, Soulico, Kuti, Karolina, Uzi Navon, Tree, Radio Trip, LEFT und MC Goga. Gut zweieinhalb tausend Zuschauer fasst der Hangar 11 im Hafen von Tel Aviv, in dem das erste hebräische Groove-Festival stattfindet. und die meisten von ihnen schienen bereits angekommen, als die erste Band, nach einem Warm-up von DJ Markey Funk und Left die Instrumente in Anschlag brachte. Die Ramirez Brothers, ein Trio aus Schlagzeug, Gitarre und Trompete, und gab den Ton vor, der die Ästhetik des ganzen Line-Ups prägte: Hochenergetische Groove-Musik mit einem Bein im Funk der 60er und 70er Jahre, so wie er seit den Poets of Rhythm in DJ-Taschen, Clubs und Festivals wieder lebendig ist. Utley acquired a trumpet for their collection of brass instruments in which the first and the second valves are reversed (Figure 1a, b); that is, the first valve creates a descending semitone while the second valve lowers the pitch a whole tone. This is the opposite of customary practice today. This trumpet is faintly stamped on its German-silver garland, ALOIS GENTNER IN DIL[LINGEN] (Figure 2). If handed to accomplished players to blow a few notes, it would befuddle them. A few could figure it out in a few minutes but none had ever heard of this bizarre valve order before. Over the years, several more instruments with this valve order were acquired for the Utley Collection: a trumpet by Andreas Barth, Munich, with only two valves in this configuration (Figure 3a, b); another three-valve trumpet by Dominicus Leicher, Augsburg (Figure 4a, b); a soprano saxhorn by Isaac Fiske, Worcester, Massachusettes (Figure 5); an unsigned American cornet in which the player has the choice between the normal or the reversed valve order (Figure 6a, b); and finally a late-nineteenth-century trumpet by Conrad Weidlich, Regensburg (Figure 7a, b).
