University College Dublin Wintersemester 2015\2016 Aktuelle Berichte über einen Studienaufenthalt innerhalb Europas sind auch im Goethe Globe veröffentlicht Erfahrungsbericht über das Auslandsstudium an dem University College Dublin Wintersemester 2015\2016 Roman Scholten; [email protected] Nachdem ich vier ereignisreiche Monate in Dublin verbracht habe, möchte ich gerne meine Erfahrungen teilen, bei der Entscheidung für einen Auslandsaufenthalt helfen und wertvolle Tipps für den Fall, dass du eine Zusage für Dublin erhalten haben solltest, geben. Zunächst einmal möchte ich auf die Universität eingehen, da diese im Nachhinein betrachtet dem entscheidendsten Faktor für einen guten Auslandsaufenthalt gleichkommt. Das University College ist eine wahnsinnig gut organisierte und ausgestattete Universität, die sich um die Erasmus-Studenten kümmert. So hat sich das International Office immer binnen kürzester Zeit auf E-Mails gemeldet und hatte in Person von Esther Sanz stets ein offenes Ohr für Fragen. Der Campus Belfield ist extrem groß und zudem extrem gut ausgestattet. Er befindet sich im Süden der Stadt und man braucht ca. 20 min mit dem Bus in die Innenstadt. Der Campus deckt mit zahlreichen Sportflächen, insgesamt 5 Fitnessstudios, einem Schwimmbad und mehreren Turnhallen den Bedarf aller Studenten. Die Universität bietet jede erdenkliche Sportart an. Man kann sich ab der zweiten Woche für den Beitritt in sogenannte Societies entscheiden. Den Ruderclub kann ich sehr empfehlen. Futbolito -ebenfalls zu empfehlen- ist eine Gemeinschaft von internationalen Studenten, die sich über Facebook organisieren und zweimal wöchentlich zum Fussball getroffen haben. Eine Society ist hilfreich, um neue Leute kennenzulernen. Nicht nur die Ausstattung der Universität in Bezug auf Sportstätten hat mich überzeugt. Es gibt mehrere Bibliotheken sowie sonstige Lernecken, an denen man sich auch in einer Gruppe treffen kann. Auf dem Campus gibt es auch eine Bank, einen Supermarkt, einen Friseur ein Studentenpub, eine Mensa sowie zahlreiche Kaffees. Allerdings sind die Preise vor allem in der Mensa deutlich höher als in Frankfurt. Dies gilt aber nicht nur für den Campus alleine, sondern für Dublin allgemein. Lebenshaltungskosten: Wie gerade schon angedeutet sollte man sich in Dublin auf höhere Lebenshaltungskosten einstellen. Zunächst wären die Kosten für den Nahverkehr zu nennen. Eine Busfahrt in die Stadt kostet, 2,80 € pro Strecke. Natürlich gibt es auch Monatskarten bei denen man allerdings ca. 70 € einplanen muss. Ich habe mir hingegen in der zweiten Woche ein gebrauchtes Fahrrad gekauft, welches ich zum halben Preis am Ende meines Aufenthalts wieder zurückgeben konnte. Mit dem Fahrrad ist man schneller, günstiger und zuverlässiger unterwegs. Auswärts essen oder das Besuchen von Pubs wird den Geldbeutel ebenfalls deutlich schneller leeren als hierzulande. Ein Pint Bier im Pub kostet im Schnitt 5,50 €. Deshalb sollte man die zahlreichen Studentenpartys nicht auslassen. Empfehlen kann ich das „Howl at the Moon“ am Mittwoch und „Dicey’s“ am Sonntag. Da gibt es alle Getränke für 2 € und es sind fast nur Studenten unterwegs. Immer eine Option sollte auch das auf dem Campus liegende Clubhouse sein. Dort ist gute Stimmung garantiert und es stellt eine weitere gute Möglichkeit dar in den ersten Wochen neue Bekanntschaften zu machen. Es ist extrem schwierig konkrete Beträge für den monatlichen Bedarf zu nennen, da dies individuell sehr verschieden sein kann. Lidl und Aldi gibt es auch in Dublin an vereinzelten Stellen und dort findet man Lebensmittel zu ähnlichen Preisen wie in Deutschland. Man sollte bei der Wohnung im Schnitt 200€ für eine vergleichbare Wohnung und ca. 100-150 € für den monatlichen Gebrauch an Mehrkosten einplanen. Diese Summe von ca. 350 € lässt sich von dem Erasmus-Stipendium jedoch gut decken. Vorbereitung: In Dublin wirst du in puncto Wohnungssuche einen schweren Stand haben. Da will ich nichts beschönigen und gleich darauf hinweisen, dass es extrem schwierig wird, eine bezahlbare Wohnung zu finden. Zudem will ich dir nahelegen keine Privatwohnung von Zuhause aus anzumieten, falls Vorauszahlungen involviert sind. Stell ausreichend sicher, dass die Wohnungen auch wirklich existieren. Die zweite Variante wäre eine Wohnung vor Ort zu suchen. Man wird mit der Zeit eine Wohnung finden aber für schwache Nerven ist dies sicherlich nichts. Da ist es gefordert aktiv auf die Vermieter zuzugehen und immer wieder zum Hörer zu greifen. Ich habe mir vor Ort eine Wohnung suchen müssen und möchte dir im Nachhinein ans Herz zu legen schon vor Ankunft die Wohnverhältnisse klarzustellen. Hierfür könnte man vielleicht ein Wochenende mit den Eltern vor Antritt des Auslandsaufenthalt Dublin ansteuern oder man sucht ein Zimmer in einem organisierten Studentenwohnheim. Einen Platz im Studentenwohnheim der Universität haben lediglich Studenten aus Ländern außerhalb des europäischen Raums bekommen. Das kann sich in kommenden Jahren durchaus verändern, da sich mehr Wohnraum auf dem Campus bereits in der Planung befunden hatte. Eine Wohnlage in der Nähe der Universität ist in Dublin aufgrund des schwach ausgebauten Nahverkehrssystems empfehlenswert. Was die Vorbereitung in Bezug auf Formalitäten angeht, versorgt einen das University College ausreichend mit Informationen per mail. Da kann eigentlich nicht allzu viel schieflaufen. Zu beachten ist lediglich, dass man sich möglichst zeitig nach Öffnung des Fensters zur Anmeldung der Kurse einträgt. Besonders beliebte Kurse können bereits binnen 5 Minuten komplett belegt sein. Bezüglich der Termine wirst du jedoch zeitig informiert werden. Ankunft in Dublin: Nachdem meine Wohnsituation geklärt war, ging es bei mir schon direkt los mit den ersten Tagen des Semesters. Diese sind mit Abstand die Wichtigsten um Leute kennenzulernen. UCD bietet viele Programmangebote an, die man unbedingt wahrnehmen sollte. Hier ist es wichtig über seinen Schatten zu springen und einfach auf die Leute zuzugehen, auch wenn man Gefahr läuft, mit einem anfangs limitierten Englisch nicht direkt beim Small talk zu brillieren. Es studieren wahnsinnig viele internationale Studenten am University College, welche sich in derselben Situation befinden. Informationen über verschieden Kurse: Nachdem du deine Kurswahl schon im Vorfeld erledigt hast, gibt dir die Universität zwei Wochen Zeit um Kurse zu wechseln. Dies kann durchaus Sinn machen, da der Schwierigkeitsgrad und Arbeitsaufwand bestimmter Kurse stark variieren kann. Ich habe sechs Kurse belegt die allesamt 5 Credits einbringen. Hier mal ein paar Informationen zu meinen Kursen: Advanced Corporate Finance: An sich ein wirklich spannendes Modul, bei dem man auf alle Fälle eine Menge lernen kann. Wichtig war es das Buch zu lesen und nicht nur auf das eher magere Skript zu vertrauen. Anders als an der Frankfurter Uni wurde mehr über verschiedene Modelle und Sachverhalte in Bezug auf Vor- und Nachteile diskutiert und weniger gerechnet. In diesem Modul habe ich zudem meine Seminararbeit im Rahmen einer Gruppenarbeit verfasst. Wir durften uns ein börsennotiertes Unternehmen aussuchen, über welches wir einen Equity Report verfassen sollten. An sich eine spannende aber auch mühsame Angelegenheit, da uns wenig Hilfestellung seitens des Professors gegeben wurde. Financial Accounting 2: Meiner Meinung nach das arbeitsintensivste Fach. Man schreibt zwei Midterms und beide erfordern eine intensive Vorbereitung. Man bekommt eine von der Professorin genannte „Bible“ zur Hand, im Grunde ein überdimensionales Skript. Um wirklich auf die Klausur vorbereitet zu sein, muss man das Skript dann auch tatsächlich sehr detailliert durcharbeiten. Auf der einen Seite ist der Wissenszuwachs mit Sicherheit enorm, aber andererseits sollte man sich gut überlegen, ob man nicht doch ein weniger arbeitsintensives Modul bei seinem Auslandssemester belegen möchte. International Financial Management: Dies war mein absolutes Lieblingsfach. Es wurde der Einfluss von Umrechnungskursen zwischen den Währungen verschiedener Länder behandelt. Hier wird ein Verständnis für die Geschichte des internationalen Handels gelehrt und es werden einem die wichtigsten Werkzeuge zur Absicherung von Währungsrisiken nahegelegt. Der Dozent ist ein ehemaliger Investmentbanker, der in den Vorlesungen von seinen Erfahrungen berichtet. Ansonsten waren die Module machbar und sehr gut aufbereitet. In vielen Kursen, wie z.B. „Marketing: Firms, Customers & Society“, musste eine Gruppenarbeit geschrieben werden. Das hat sich bei vielen schwieriger gestaltet, da viele keine Lust hatten aber die Gruppenarbeiten dennoch einigermaßen entscheidend für die Endnote waren. Mit „Economics of Public Policy“ habe ich ein Modul aus dem Schwerpunkt Volkswirtschaftslehre belegt. Der Kurs war im Prinzip nichts anderes als eine oberflächige Zusammenfassung von OVWL. Mit „Cost Management“ habe ich noch ein Modul gehabt, welches ebenfalls einen hohen Arbeitsaufwand benötigt. Allerdings zahlt sich der Einsatz in jedem Fall aus, da in den Vorlesungen viele praktisch relevante Verfahren zur Analyse von Produktionsprozessen und deren Kosten veranschaulicht werden. Wer zu den Vorlesungen und Übungen geht und sich ein bisschen Mühe gibt, wird mit einer guten Note belohnt werden. Ein paar Tipps zum Thema Sightseeing: Jeder will das Maximum aus seinem Aufenthalt rausholen und gleichzeitig darf man aber nicht das Studieren vergessen! That baby boy, born at 5.45 am at 1, James's Street, in the South Dublin Union - now St James's Hospital - was later christened James Christopher Branigan. His father was an official in the South Dublin Union and the family lived in a house within the complex grounds. The house is still there today, just past the main hospital entrance on James's Street. Even today, more than twenty years after his death, thousands of Dubliners recall him and his style of policing and it is very common to hear people say "if only we had a few like him around now".
