Prevention of Sports Injuries in Sri Lanka: What Do We Know About Injuries in Our Athletes?
Gamage J.P. et al. SLJSEM, 2019/2020, 2:1 DOI: http://doi.org/10.4038/sljsem.v2i1.12 REVIEW ARTICLE Prevention of sports injuries in Sri Lanka: what do we know about injuries in our athletes? Prasanna J. Gamage1, Alex Kountouris2, Caroline F. Finch1, Lauren V. Fortington1 Abstract In terms of safeguarding the health and well-being of athletes in Sri Lanka, a primary focus has always been toward the treatment of injuries after they have occurred and promoting rehabilitation back into sport. There has been little attention towards the primary prevention of injuries in Sri Lankan sports. As a developing sporting nation, the benefits of injury prevention are immense: from a public health and financial perspective, through to individual benefits for athletes’ physical, psychological and social health. Understanding the reasons behind the lack of motive towards sports injury prevention in the country, and challenges in developing and implementing injury prevention measures in the field is useful so that these reasons can be addressed and overcome. Based on recent experience in conducting injury prevention research among Sri Lankan junior cricketers, this article discusses injury prevention principles in sport and provides directions for future sport injury prevention research in Sri Lanka. Keywords: Injury prevention, Cricket, Athletic injuries Introduction In addition to the health benefits, participation in The prevalence of overweight and obese sports and physical activity comes with abundant individuals has increased over the last three social and psychological benefits [3]. This is true decades, and is projected to rise to an estimated particularly for adolescent and youth, as social 58% of the world's adult population by 2030 [1]. -
The Biology and Ecology of Samson Fish Seriola Hippos
The biology of Samson Fish Seriola hippos with emphasis on the sportfishery in Western Australia. By Andrew Jay Rowland This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Murdoch University 2009 DECLARATION I declare that the information contained in this thesis is the result of my own research unless otherwise cited. ……………………………………………………. Andrew Jay Rowland 2 Abstract This thesis had two overriding aims. The first was to describe the biology of Samson Fish Seriola hippos and therefore extend the knowledge and understanding of the genus Seriola. The second was to uses these data to develop strategies to better manage the fishery and, if appropriate, develop catch-and-release protocols for the S. hippos sportfishery. Trends exhibited by marginal increment analysis in the opaque zones of sectioned S. hippos otoliths, together with an otolith of a recaptured calcein injected fish, demonstrated that these opaque zones represent annual features. Thus, as with some other members of the genus, the number of opaque zones in sectioned otoliths of S. hippos are appropriate for determining age and growth parameters of this species. Seriola hippos displayed similar growth trajectories to other members of the genus. Early growth in S. hippos is rapid with this species reaching minimum legal length for retention (MML) of 600mm TL within the second year of life. After the first 5 years of life growth rates of each sex differ, with females growing faster and reaching a larger size at age than males. Thus, by 10, 15 and 20 years of age, the predicted fork lengths (and weights) for females were 1088 (17 kg), 1221 (24 kg) and 1311 mm (30 kg), respectively, compared with 1035 (15 kg), 1124 (19 kg) and 1167 mm (21 kg), respectively for males. -

Strength and Conditioning in Sri Lankan Sports;
GSJ: Volume 9, Issue 3, March 2021 ISSN 2320-9186 858 GSJ: Volume 9, Issue 3, March 2021, Online: ISSN 2320-9186 www.globalscientificjournal.com Strength and Conditioning in Sri Lankan Sports; Fulfilling a high performance Need Duminda Silva-Doctoral Student of University Of Kelaniya ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of strength and conditioning interventions on sports for high performance in Sri Lanka. Training for strength and conditioning is a standard occurrence in any sport that seeks to improve performance or prevent injuries. Studies on the impact of strength and conditioning on athletic results, however, are scarce; the effect of age, gender or level of competition is even scarcer. Existing studies conducted by Sri Lankan researchers do not include research on strength and conditioning which has resulted in a knowledge gap and a lack of qualified coaches, lack in knowledge of players and lack in knowledge of the sports management. Further it gives importance and prominence to sports specific skills and less importance to physical fitness area when it comes to team selection. Hence players and coaches give less emphasis to strength and conditioning in all levels of sport in Sri Lanka. Due to these reasons, strength and conditioning is in a very primitive stage in Sri Lankan sports. If Sri Lanka is to win another medal in the Olympic level or at world level, prominence should be given to strength and conditioning to achieve high performance. Gautama Buddha Was Born in Helabima 2
1 2 Gautama Buddha was born in Helabima (Volume II) The English translation of අපඋපන් මේ මෙළම 뷔න් උපන් ජන්뷊Ǔපය (මෙලන ම ොටස) (This Helabima, where we were born, is Janbudveepa, the birth place of the Lord Buddha) Introduction 3 This is the second volume of the book අප උපන් මේ මෙළම뷔න් උපන් ජන්뷊Ǔපය what I published 16 months ago. It is a must to be fulfilled by all of us, as the people who are born in this Helabima and live in this Helabima, to read, analyze and understand the absolute truth highlighted in this book. Every human being is having the mental freedom of speaking the truth, writing about the truth and recording them for the future use. After reading most of the things mentioned in this book, you will experience a total new, different understanding in Dhamma which is not going hand in hand with the opinions what you knew all this times and what you had learnt following the conventional thinking, systems and methodologies. Buddha Dhamma stands for “Penetrating in to Paramartha Dhamma through the traditions”. What you read in books and learnt from someone is the tradition, the conventional thinking. They are nothing but guessings that you have experienced based on what you heard, saw and learnt. You should penetrate in to what you learnt on traditions and based on them you should see the absolute truth. Seeing the absolute truth is limited purely to you yourself. Seeing the absolute truth for you, cannot be done by someone else. -
