Mike Mantler and Carla Bley, being the only two non-leader members of the Guild, had decided to organize an orchestra made up of musicians both inside and outside the Guild. This group, then known as the Jazz Composer's Guild Orchestra and consisting of eleven musicians, began rehearsals in the downtown loft of painter Mike Snow for its premiere performance at the Guild's Judson Hall series of concerts in December 1964. The orchestra, set up in a large circle in the center of the hall, played "Communications no.3" by Mike Mantler and "Roast" by Carla Bley. The concert was so successful musically that the leaders decided to continue to write for the group and to give performances at the Guild's new headquarters, a triangular studio on top of the Village Vanguard, called the Contemporary Center. In early March 1965 at the first of these concerts, which were presented in a workshop style, the group had been enlarged to fifteen musicians and the pieces played were "Radio" by Carla Bley and "Communications no.4" (subtitled "Day") by Mike Mantler.

Added inventiveness is found on Dresser’s GLOBE UNITY: BRAZIL composition “Yeller Grace”, which blends “Yellow Rose of Texas”, “Amazing Grace” and the National Anthem into a barely recognizable yet fully engaging mix. And they show plenty of versatility, as piano and bass converse equally well within the sweeping, legato passages of “For My Mother” or the jarring, playful bounces of “Big Mama”. But the true highlight is their interplay on Dresser’s composition “Mattress on a Stick”, which leads with a breathtakingly lyrical bass introduction, over Moser’s sparse and haunting choice Patience of chords. Jimmy Katz Jimmy MIGUEL ZENÓN QUARTET Miguel Zenón Alto Sax Luis Perdomo Piano Hans Glawischnig Bass Henry Cole Drums PROGRAM There will be no intermission. Saturday, February 11 @ 7 PM and 9:30 PM Prince Theatre Part of the African Roots, American Voices series. 16/17 SEASON 5 PROGRAM NOTES Miguel Zenón’s new album, Típico, is above all a celebration of his longstanding quartet. His previous releases have augmented the core unit with additional instrumentalists as Zenón looked outward to explore various aspects of his Puerto Rican heritage. This new album feels more intimate. Its focus stays closer to home, with nods to Zenón’s own personal and professional life as it zeroes in on what makes his band unique. Zenón’s quartet has been developing a common language for more than a decade. Pianist Luis Perdomo and bassist Hans Glawischnig have been with Zenón since the turn of the millennium; drummer Henry Cole joined the band in 2005. Their language is thoroughly fluent in modern jazz, with instrumental prowess. The dialect of rhythmic and harmonic complexity they’ve created together through the years is distinctive. ABOUT THE ARTISTS Miguel Zenón (Alto Sax) Multiple Grammy® nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, he has also developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American folkloric music and jazz.

Although initial reviews of the scene were largely enthusiastic, subsequent assessments of artistic work from this period have been largely negative. Artists like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf have been assessed primarily in terms of gentrification, commodification, and political commitment relying upon various theoretical assumptions about social processes. The conclusions reached have primarily centred upon the lack of resistance by these artists to post industrial capitalism in its various manifestations.

The death of postfeminism : Oprah and the Riot Grrrls talk back by Cathy Sue Copenhagen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Montana State University © Copyright by Cathy Sue Copenhagen (2002) Abstract: This paper addresses the ways feminism operates in two female literary communities: the televised Oprah Winfrey talk show and book club and the Riot Grrrl zine movement. Both communities are analyzed as ideological responses of women and girls to consumerism, media conglomeration, mainstream appropriation of movements, and postmodern "postfeminist" cultural fragmentation. The far-reaching "Oprah" effect on modem publishing is critiqued, as well as the controversies and contradictions of the effect. Oprah is analyzed as a divided text operating in a late capitalist culture with third wave feminist tactics. The Riot Grrrl movement is discussed as the potential beginning of a fourth wave of feminism. The Grrrls redefine feminism and femininity in their music and writings in zines. The two sites are important to study as they are mainly populated by under represented segments of "postfeminist" society: middle aged women and young girls.
