  • Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 by Jeffery S
Delightfulee Jeffrey S. McMillan University of Michigan Press Lee Morgan Chronology 1956–1972 By Jeffery S. McMillan This is an annotated listing of all known Lee Morgan performances and all recordings (studio, live performances, broadcasts, telecasts, and interviews). The titles of studio recordings are given in bold and preceded by the name of the session leader. Recordings that appear to be lost are prefaced with a single asterisk in parentheses: (*). Recordings that have been commercially issued have two asterisks: **. Recordings that exist on tape but have never been commercially released have two asterisks in parentheses: (**). Any video footage known to survive is prefaced with three asterisks: ***. Video footage that was recorded but appears to now be lost is prefaced with three asterisks in parentheses: (***). On numerous occasions at Slugs’ Saloon in Manhattan, recording devices were set up on the stage and recorded Morgan’s performances without objection from the trumpeter. So far, none of these recordings have come to light. The information herein is a collation of data from newspapers, periodicals, published and personal interviews, discographies, programs, pamphlets, and other chronologies of other artists. Morgan’s performances were rarely advertised in most mainstream papers, so I drew valuable information primarily from African-American newspapers and jazz periodicals, which regularly carried ads for nightclubs and concerts. Entertainment and nightlife columnists in the black press, such as “Woody” McBride, Masco Young, Roland Marsh, Jesse Walker, Art Peters, and Del Shields, provided critical information, often verifying the personnel of an engagement or whether an advertised appearance occurred or was cancelled. Newspapers that I used include the Baltimore Afro-American (BAA), Cleveland Call & Post (C&P), Chicago Defender (CD), New Jersey Afro-American (NJAA), New York Amsterdam News (NYAN), Philadelphia Tribune (PT), and Pittsburgh Courier (PC).

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my professors at the University of Florida for their help and encouragement in this endeavor. An extra special thanks to my mentor through this process, Dr. Paul Richards, whose forward-thinking approach to music made this possible. Dr. James P. Sain introduced me to new ways to think about composition; Scott Wilson showed me other ways of understanding jazz pedagogy. I also thank my colleagues at Florida A&M University for their encouragement and support of this endeavor, especially Dr. Kawachi Clemons and Professor Lindsey Sarjeant. I am fortunate to be able to call you friends. I also acknowledge my friends, relatives and business partners who helped convince me that I wasn’t insane for going back to school at my age. • A Descriptive Analysis of the Fourteen Mid-American Conference Athletic Band Programs
A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE FOURTEEN MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE ATHLETIC BAND PROGRAMS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Eric W. Aho, B.M.E., M.A. The Ohio State University 2005 Dissertation Committee: Approved by: Jon R. Woods, Advisor Jan H. McCrary ___________________ Russel C. Mikkelson Advisor School of Music i Copyright by Eric W. Aho 2005 i ABSTRACT During the annual meeting of the MidAmerican Conference Band Directors Association at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago (December, 2003) it was proposed and accepted to conduct a comprehensive study describing and discussing issues and topics related to the athletic band programs of the MAC. During the meeting a model survey instrument, based on the studies of Holvik (1971), Patzig (1983), and Fuller (1995) was presented. Revisions were made by the MAC athletic band directors refreshing the model to include additional topics of value to the Association. During the spring and summer of 2004 the model was reviewed by a panel of collegiate band directors who agreed to serve as readers and advisors. In its final form the questionnaire focused on 33 topics. In April 2005, the questionnaire was sent to the 14 athletic band directors of the MAC via email in a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet format. The spreadsheet version, presented on CD-ROM, and a standard hard copy were sent via U.S. Mail. All of the athletic band directors responded fully and positively resulting in a comprehensive collection of data describing the staffing, administration, rehearsal and performance practices, traditions and trends of the athletic bands of the MAC.

  • Sonny Red Oral History 2020
BLUESVILLE: THE JOURNEY OF SONNY RED Anders Svanoe INTRODUCTION The first time I heard Sonny Red on record, I wondered, “Who is this guy?” Luckily for me, I had stumbled on Curtis Fuller's New Trombone, which started the nine-year (and still counting) love affair with Sonny Red (a.k.a. Sylvester Kyner). That particular record really caught my attention, since I had never heard that much trombone and alto saxophone pairing on the front line. But there was something almost suspicious in how these two masterful musicians blended and embellished every note together as if they were one. It seemed they knew each other well. Almost too well. Red's organic sound on the alto saxophone was a perfect match for Curtis Fuller. I couldn't explain why I liked it so much, other than to say it was captivating, heartfelt and real. Imperfectly perfect, if you can say that. In the following weeks I looked for additional record dates that featured Sonny, but found very few sessions available on CD. Not even Out Of the Blue, perhaps Red's finest effort, was available in the U.S. Now Sonny's albums are finally resurfacing on CD, and are beginning to attract positive attention. When these albums first came out in the late 1950s and early 1960s, they were sadly overlooked. This was a common problem for bebop alto players recording in the 1950s: there were just too many other great alto players recording a similar type of music, and Red's style somehow got lost in the mix.

  • Iii E. the Jazz Component: the Fantasy Collection
III E. THE JAZZ COMPONENT: THE FANTASY COLLECTION III E1. The LPs For many serious researchers into the changes and developments in jazz during the late 1940s and the early 1950s it is the LP albums which are part of the collection that will be of major interest. In particular Bill Belmont, as he assembled the Fantasy collection for the Archives, was able to locate a selection of the earliest 10” Prestige LPs which had been almost forgotten in the Fantasy warehouse. It should be emphasised, however, that these are not the original Prestige releases, which now sell for thousands of dollars on the collector’s market. To satisfy a small core of serious jazz enthusiasts, most of them in Japan, Fantasy manufactured facsimiles of many of the most important LPs in their catalog. Although the new albums are imprinted with an inconspicuous notice “Manufactured from master owned by Fantasy, Inc.” they are in every other respect identical with the originals. They are an invaluable time capsule of this crucial period of jazz’s development - and in their often primitive albums covers and minimal presentation they suggest the marginal nature of jazz as this period began. Also, in their LP format the modern listener has an insight into the programming concepts that led to the presentation of the material on the LP’s two sides. THE PRESTIGE 10”ALBUMS These have been reproduced with the original one color covers and - in the beginning - simply catalog listings on the back of the cover. The album notes, generally by Ira Gitler, begin after the first few examples.
