  • A Prototype Text Analyzer for Mandarin Chinese TTS System
A Prototype Text Analyzer for Mandarin Chinese TTS System Chiao-ting Fang Uppsala University Department of Linguistics and Philology Master’s Programme in Language Technology Master’s Thesis in Language Technology June 11, 2017 Supervisors: Yan Shao, Uppsala University Kåre Sjölander, ReadSpeaker AB Andreas Björk, ReadSpeaker AB Abstract This project presents a prototype of a text analyzer for a rule-based Mandarin Chinese TTS voice, including components for text normalization, lexicons, pho- netic analysis, prosodic analysis, and a phone set. Our implementation shows that despite the linguistic differences, it is feasible to build a Chinese voice with the TTS framework for European languages used at ReadSpeaker AB. A number of challenges in disambiguation and tone sandhi have been identified during the implementation, which we discuss in detail. A comparison of the existing voices is designed, based on these cases, to better understand the per- formance level of commercial TTS systems. The results verify our conjecture of the difficult cases and also show that there is considerable disagreement on the tone sandhi pattern among the voices. Further research on these topics will contribute to the development of future TTS voices. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT This thesis discusses the development of a Chinese speech synthesis-by-rule system and presents the structure and features of the system. The aim of the work is to produce highly intelligible standard Chinese speech with natural sounding intonation from unrestricted Chinese text, using a parallel formant speech synthesizer. The synthesis system accepts standard Chinese Pinyin text as input, either from a conventional keyboard or from a computer readable file. Text to detailed phonetic description conversion is carried out in three steps: 1) application of a group of phonological and phonetic rules to convert Pinyin text into demisyllable strings; 2) conversion of the demisyllables into a succession of phonetic elements using a dictionary look-up strategy; 3) application of prosodic rules at different levels.

  • Syllable As a Synchronization Mechanism That Makes Human Speech Possible
SYLLABLE AS A SYNCHRONIZATION MECHANISM 1 Syllable as a synchronization mechanism that makes human speech possible Yi Xu University College London, UK Department of Speech, Hearing and Phonetic Sciences, Chandler House, 2 Wakefield Street, London WC1N 1PF, United Kingdom, Email: [email protected] Abstract: Speech is a communication system that transmits information by using aerodynamics of articulatory movements to generate sequences of alternating sounds. For this system to work, the articulators need to shift their state frequently and rapidly in order to encode as much information as possible in a given period of time, and the many articulators involved need to be coordinated so as to make the central control of their rapid movements possible. These demands are met by the syllable, a temporal coordination mechanism whose main function is to synchronize multiple articulatory movements so as to make speaking possible. This coordination involves three basic mechanisms: target approximation, edge synchronization and tactile anchoring. With target approximation, articulatory movements successively approach non-overlapping underlying targets. With edge synchronization, multiple articulatory movements are aligned by their onsets and offsets. And with tactile anchoring, contact sensations during segments with relatively tight closure provide alignment references for the synchronization. This synchronization mechanism is the source of many speech phenomena, from segmental coarticulation to tonal alignment, and from normal adult production to child acquisition and speech disorders. It is also what links speech to motor movements in general. Keywords: syllable, target approximation, edge synchronization, tactile anchoring, degrees of freedom, temporal coordination SYLLABLE AS A SYNCHRONIZATION MECHANISM 2 1. Introduction That the syllable is an important unit of speech may seem obvious.

  • The Acoustic Cues at Prosodic Boundaries in Mandarin
The Acoustic Cues at Prosodic Boundaries in Mandarin Jiani Chen A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science University of Washington 2020 Committee: Gina-Anne Levow Richard Wright Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Linguistics © Copyright 2020 Jiani Chen University of Washington Abstract The Acoustic Cues at Prosodic Boundaries in Mandarin Jiani Chen Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Gina-Anne Levow Department of Linguistics Prosodic boundary labeling is an important task not only for its direct application in speech synthesis but also for constructing speech corpora for speech synthesis. However, due to the lack of quantitive study on Mandarin prosody, it is hard to provide a unified standard for prosodic boundary labeling. In this work, I study the acoustic cues at prosodic boundaries in Mandarin with a large corpus and with quantitative methods. First of all, the study of acoustic cues at prosodic boundaries is done through experimental phonetics methods. Then, the acoustic cues are used as features to study their relation to different boundary types through automatic prosodic boundary labeling and feature ablation experiments. The one-way ANOVA results indicate that the baseline is reset only after intonational phrase boundaries, and it slightly declines after prosodic phrase boundaries. The results of ablation experiments employing a MaxEnt and an SVM classifier, along with the ANOVA test results, demonstrate that silence duration is an essential acoustic cue at the prosodic boundaries. The results of ablation experiments also provide some information on acoustic-related acoustic cues: 1) Long-distance f0 variation (reset/declination) might be useful for measuring the degree of f0 variation after a prosodic boundary, and might be a useful acoustic cue for distinguishing different boundary types.

  • Chapter 23 Cslp Corpora and Language Resources
CHAPTER 23 CSLP CORPORA AND LANGUAGE RESOURCES Hsiao-Chuan Wang †, Thomas Fang Zheng ‡, and Jianhua Tao § †National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu ‡Research Institute of Information Technology, Tsinghua University, Beijing §Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing E-mail:{[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]} This chapter discusses the fundamental issues related to the development of language resources for Chinese spoken language processing (CSLP). Chinese dialects, transcription systems, and Chinese character sets are described. The general procedure for speech corpus production is introduced, along with the dialect-specific problems related to CSLP corpora. Some activities in the development of CSLP corpora are also presented here. Finally, available language resources for CSLP as well as their related websites are listed. 1. Introduction Language resources usually refer to large sets of language data or descriptions which are in machine-readable form. They can be used for developing and evaluating natural language and speech processing algorithms and systems. A language resource can be in the form of a written language corpus, spoken language corpus, a lexical database, or an electronic dictionary. It may also include software tools for the use of that resource. A written language corpus is a text corpus which can be made up of whole texts or samples of texts. The development of corpus linguistics requires the use of computational tools to process large-sized text corpora.1 A spoken language corpus refers to the speech database which is designed for the development and evaluation of speech processing systems. For example, a speech recognition system based on statistical model techniques needs to train acoustic models of speech units by using a large amount of speech data, as well as to train its language models by the use of a large text corpus.
