Underrated Gem of a ComicBy GrimlockThe Nemesis the Warlock comics are very underrated, as are most of 2000AD's series. The artwork is top notch, and the story of the comic is very different and actually works. Pat Mills' best work in my opinion. The first review here states that the comics were originally printed in color which is WRONG. The original 2000AD printings of the comics were in black and white, and it does not deter from the amazingly detailed artwork of Kevin O'Neill, Jesus Redondo, and Brian Talbot. This is the comic that put Kevin O'Neill on the map. This volume is a great deal, as you get the first stories of the Nemesis series and a nice bunch of artwork and cover artwork that the artists did for the 2000AD progs they were first printed in. A Classic and Legendary ComicBy metalheadtakesthesquareThe illustration and story of Nemesis is quite simply top notch. In this first collection the first four books as well as the original strips that started it all are presented in black and white. While it would have been nice to see some full color illustration the continuity and flow of the story is well supported by the monochrome presentation. The story, though not typical of the superhero crazed comic culture of the time, is creative, original, and innovative living up to the standard of the other great works of the 2000 AD universe. The social commentary woven into the characters and dialogue is both humorous and thought provoking, affording the reader an opportunity to enjoy a well paced and action packed story while still providing the depth necessary to reflect on higher meaning. If you enjoy atypical storylines, antiheroes, and epic alien battles, Nemesis is one of the greats. One of the eighties’ best comics stories collected in it's first US editionTermight, a world at the heart of a cruel galactic empire. A world devastated by nuclear warfare. Deep below ground its inhabitants try to eke out a mere existence, continually threatened by the Terminators, lead by the diabolically evil Torquemada. There is a resistance though, and a new kind of hero. Meet Nemesis the Warlock, champion of the coming rebellion! About the AuthorKevin O’Neill worked as an art assistant on the very first issue of 2000 AD and quickly became involved in the creative side of the comic, co-creating classics like A.B.C. Not being entirely embedded in the genre, the BBC’s recent adaptation of Sherlock Holmes was, I regret to say, my first experience of the London deducer (I assume I don’t count Basil The Great Mouse Detective?). I obviously had my preconceived ideas; deer-stalker hat, pipe, drugs, smoggy Victorian London blah, blah, blah. The slightly archaic boy’s-own feel I get from just holding one of Conan Doyle’s books has never attracted me to actually open it, let alone choose to spend my time watching one of the myriad of adaptations available. But, having also recently ‘found’ Doctor Who, I found myself eagerly awaiting each of the ‘Moffatiss’ episodes with bated breath. I am aware this post is a little late in the game, but it only really hit me today just what a profound effect the show has had on me. I was simply walking down the street when a very muscular chap crossed to walk in front of me. Instantly my womanly judgement mode kicked in as I could see he had gone to the effort of cutting one trouser leg higher that the other. I have often heard tell the tales of such fashion stylings but had never actually seen it for myself, and here was quite a scary looking gentleman sporting a custom designed Adidas version.

From the weirdly twisted and hugely detailed artwork to the constant invention going on with the story and world-building it comes across as some sort of demented stream of consciousness at times this is a great read. This book also gives the explanation for Torquemada's "grandfather" Nostradamus' words in the previous book about Termight ending in "a sea of fire and blood". Reading to reach some ultimate conclusion misunderstands the process, and mind you, reading is first and foremost a process. Labels: A.
