His rise as a playwright in 1960s, marked the coming of age of Modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi.[1] He is a recipient[2] of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. For four decades Karnad has been composing plays, often using history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues. He has translated his plays into English and has received acclaim.[3] His plays have been translated into some Indian languages and directed by directors like Ebrahim Alkazi, B. V. Karanth, Alyque Padamsee, Prasanna, Arvind Gaur, Satyadev Dubey, Vijaya Mehta, Shyamanand Jalan and Amal Allana.[3] He is active in the world of Indian cinema working as an actor, director, and screenwriter, in Hindi and Kannada flicks, earning awards along the way. He was conferred Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India and won four Filmfare Awards where three are Filmfare Award for Best Director - Kannada and one Filmfare Best Screenplay Award. Early life and education Girish Karnad was born in Matheran, Maharashtra. His initial schooling was in Marathi. In Sirsi, Karnataka, he was exposed to travelling theatre groups, Natak Mandalis as his parents were deeply interested in their plays.[4] As a youngster, Karnad was an ardent admirer of Yakshagana and the theater in his village.[] He earned his Bachelors of Arts degree in Mathematics and Statistics, from Karnatak Arts College, Dharwad (Karnataka University), in 1958. -

Films Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Govt. of India 24- Dr.G Deshmukh Marg MUMBAI -400 026 PRESS RELEASE Dated 22st Sept., 2020 NRITYANJALI – an ode to Indian Classical Dance and Maestros Indian Classical Dance is an umbrella term for various performing arts whose theory and practice can be traced to the Sanskrit text, Natya-Shastra, the foundational treatise for the text of which is attributed to the ancient scholar Bharata Muni. Prominent dance forms like Bharat Natyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohini Aattam are traditionally regional, all of them include music and recitation in local language or Sanskrit, and they represent a unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes and expression. After the overwhelming response to Raagotsav, an online film festival on Indian Classical Music, Films Division is presenting the first part of “Nrityanjali”, an on line festival on Indian Classical Dance and Maestros between September 23–25, 2020. Ten films on the life and works of India’s leading classical dancers will be streamed on Films Division website and You Tube channel. Nrityanjali showcases “Sitara Devi” (20 min./1995/Amar Varma), a film on doyen of Kathak Dance, hailed as the Queen of Kathak by Rabindranath Tagore, honoured with many awards including Padma Shri, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Kalidas Samman. “Yamini Krishnamurthy” (20 min./1981/Balwant Gargi), is on the leading Bharat Natyam exponent who also excels in Odissi and Kuchipudi. She has been honoured with Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Natya Shastra Award. “Raja-Radha” (22 min./1989/Kunwar Sinha), a biographical film on the well known Kuchipudi dancer-couple Raja and Radha Reddy, who gave new dimension to the traditional Kuchipudi dance and honoured with Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Nritya Choodmani Award. -

HAYAVADANA Kumud Mehta Hayavadana had its premiere on May 20, 1983 at the Tata Theatre. Shri Vasantrao Patil, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, was the Chief Guest. Sponsored by the National Centre for the Performing Arts and the Goa Hindu Association, the first five shows scheduled at the Tata Theatre received an enthusiastic response from theatre-lovers and connoisseurs. Hayavadana was written by Girish Karnad during his tenure as a Homi Bhabha Fellow, and designed by the same creative team (Vijaya Mehta and Bhaskar Chandavarkar) which had successfully produced Shakuntala during the inaugural week of the Tata Theatre. Why did Vijaya Mehta and Bhaskar Chandavarkar, who had just recently concentrated their energies on a burning contemporary theme, the psyche of the dalit (Vijaya Mehta while directing Purusha and Bhaskar Chandavarkar in his film Atyachara) turn now to this play based on the Vetalapanchavimshati, the cycle of twenty-five tales related by a demon, · from one of the oldest collection of stories in Sanskrit literature? It is not difficult to surmise the reasons for the choice. For Hayavadana, as conceived by Girish Karnad, focusses on a crucial aspect of any kind of modern self-enquiry. Wherein lies an individual's identity? In mental equipment, knowledge as embodied in Devadatta's personality? Or, in the sheer evidence of the world known to Kapil through the sensat1ons of his body? Or, perhaps, in Padmini's subconscious yearning for a perfect partner embracing both these attributes? Besides, even as a modern seeks to understand the meaning of ·selfhood, does he not, with equal anguish, long to be unfragmented, integrated, whole? It is this philosophical undercurrent that runs through The Transposed Heads, Thomas Mann's renowned version of this story. -

Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government has chosen some theatre personalities for award from various States of the country including Karnataka and if so, the details thereof; (b) whether the Government has made budgetary provisions for the cooperation to theatres and if so, the details thereof along with the funds allocated and utilized in this regard; (c) whether the Government has sanctioned and disbursed funds to some theatre groups of Bangalore and Delhi during the last two years for promotion of theatre culture; and (d) if so, the details thereof? Answer MINISTER OF STATE (IC) FOR CULTURE & TOURISM (DR. MAHESH SHARMA) (a): Sangeet Natak Akademi, an autonomous organisation under Ministry of Culture, confers Akademi Awards each year to eminent practitioners of Music, Dance and Theatre. Details of the theatre personalities who have been conferred Akademi Awards for the years 2014 & 2015 is given at Annexure -1. For the year 2016, nominations have been invited by the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Awards will be decided in the next meeting of the General Council. (b)to(d): No, Madam. Ministry of Culture has not made budgetary provision specifically for cooperation to theatres. However, this Ministry administers two schemes namely, Performing Arts Grant Scheme and Scheme of financial assistance to Cultural Organization with National Presence. Under the said schemes, financial assistance is given for promotion of art & culture (including for promotion of theatre culture). -

The Fellowship of the Akademi is the most prestigious and rare honour, which is restricted to a very limited number at a given time. Presently there are only 32 Fellows of the SangeetNatak Akademi. The General Council of the Akademi also selected 33 persons from the fields of Music, Dance, and Theatre for the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards (Akademi Puraskar) for the year 2009.
