In what can only be described as a horrible day for the club, the A-grade Kings received a stark reminder of what happens when you don’t come to play in this competition. In a match that presented us with the opportunity to go two games clear of Scotch and keep in touch with the top 5, the effort was well below- par and we were given a lesson in winning contested ball. Most disappointing was the fact we laid 30 tackles for the day (KPI of 20 per quarter), which highlights that our pressure was almost non-existent.

Scotch dominated the stoppages - an area in which we have generally been very good - and were able to move the ball quickly into their forwards. The end margin of 25 points flattered us, as we were significantly outplayed by a side that simply wanted it more.

After a week off, we get an opportunity to redeem ourselves against fierce rival Athelstone this Saturday at Haslam Oval. With the team keen to atone for last week’s performance and the thumping this week’s opponents gave us in Round 1, let’s hope we see the effort and intensity that we know makes us a good side.

Adelaide’s football spectating community eagerly awaited its beloved Lit Grade’s Debut in the highly sought twilight time slot.

The stage had been set for an epic game against our old rivals, Scotch. The boys were as keen as mustard to put on a show for a crowd consisting of thousands of loyal supporters.

For the majority of the game, we were reasonably evenly placed with our opponents – only ever being a few kicks behind at most. Despite this, due to injuries and sheer size of some of the Scotch competitors, we were unable to get the chocolates on the night.

An honourable mention goes out to Tom Kilgariff, who was crunched harder than Matty Hayden could crunch a cover drive. Killa was running back with the flight of the footy, to be met solidly with a swiftly leading Scotch player coming from the other direction. That’s courage if I’ve ever seen it. He got the daylights knocked out of him and also wrecked his shoulder in the process, but hats off to ya Tom.

Todd “An Image of Peak Physical State” Bevan shockingly announced his decision to step out of retirement, and re-kindle a career with the Lit Grade. Not knowing whether his ankles were going to evaporate to dust by the end of the game, Toddy came out and put on quite the show, getting back to his old form of taking grabs and kicking goals. Honourable mentions to him also.

After an enjoyable weekend off, the boys are eager to get stuck into Athelstone on our home deck this week. See you there.

-9- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday June 16th 2017 Round 10 - Athelstone Home MILESTONE GAME A big congratulations to our good friend Tommy Moir on his 100th game for the mighty Kings this weekend. Top effort! ‘Moisty’ has played plenty of footy over the years and has been a great teammate to have on and off the field. Magill Primary School brought many successful years which resulted in a Year 7 Premiership at Footy Park. A great memory to have.

Modelling his game on Ben Rutten, Tom settled into Pembroke School footy as one of the more reliable defenders of our year level. Although he was seen up on a back flank from time to time, he did love taking the reins as Dungeon Master when given the opportunity. ‘Ice pick’ not only excelled at school football but took his talents for a one and done season at Walkerville FC. His imposing physique and hard-nosed defensive game sent shivers down full forward’s spine in the NEMJFA. His dominance earning him the BnF that year.

His time at POSFC has seen him take a very similar role as one of the most consistent defenders at the club. He has the ability to play in a variety of positions, however, his strength in the contest and rapid closing speed make him a difficult matchup for any forward and he is rarely beaten in a one-on-one contest.

A little known story about ‘The Towlette’ that we would like to share takes us back to Rd 1 2011, his first game for the Kings. Fresh out of high school, ‘The Wet One’ forced his way into the C-Grade, in the backline of course, for his debut against CBC at Haslam (hate the Dolphins). There was a number of representatives from the 2010 cohort playing in this game and we were all pretty nervous given it was our first game for the club. As you can imagine there was plenty of speculation pre-game about the type of operators we would be lining up against. Tom definitely drew the short straw. His opponent for the day looked like he was on day release and directed some hefty threats towards the young man on more than one occasion. Welcome to amateur league football.

Off the field ‘The Towel Man’ spends much of time studying, at Kick ‘N’ Box where we works part time, or playing guitar. He recently put his hand up to play a short set at his sister’s wedding. Sources have said that his 30 minute loop of Wonderwall was flawless. Saturday weather forecast: Mostly sunny and extremely moist in Kensington Park. Looks like your day mate. Enjoy!

Congratulations Walshy on the 200 game milestone, it’s a huge achievement and one you thoroughly deserve. I know it’s a well-worn cliché but time certainly goes by quickly and it’s been a highlight of my own career to play in so many games with you over the years. I vividly remember when you first arrived at the club as you made your presents well-known right from the start, and if my memory serves me correctly you often roared into the Haslam carpark with your windows down and Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls blaring at top volume. When I think about your on-field contribution to the club over the years’ traits such as consistency and reliability immediately come to mind, with no better example of this being your match-winning performances in the finals last year all whilst being hampered by a hamstring injury which would have kept most players on the sidelines. These such traits, and the sheer fact that you are a bloody good ruckman has meant that M Walsh has been the first magnet put on the coach’s board for many years now when it has come to team selection. It’s not just on the field though where you have created so many great memories during your time at the club. The ease in which Walshy puts away jug skulls have become legendary at the Kings, as have some of your performances on footy trip and other club social functions. I have enjoyed sharing many of these off-field moments with you over the years, with the only exception possibly being the night I became member of the not-so-exclusive Walshy headlock club! In all seriousness though, you should be rightfully proud of your involvement with the club over the years, as amateur football clubs simply don’t survive without contributions from people like yourself. Congratulations once again on the milestone and looking forward to playing with you in the big game.

Busta

Congratulations on playing 200 games Walshy, it’s a fantastic achievement, something you should be very proud of!

For those that haven’t noticed woosha hasn’t been seen in a training drill since JC was coaching back in 2008, even your big brother moose kicked more footys at training then you! That being said he certainly holds the record for most laps ran at training! His size 18 Birkenstocks have trampled a pronounced rut around the boundary line, some say this is why haslam is such an unusual shaped oval, the ground staff keep marking the line where walshys path goes.

It has been a privilege to play a lot of footy, cricket and very poor golf with you over the years Walshy, you’re a fantastic team mate but an even better friend! Good luck on Saturday mate, I look forward to handing you that hard earned stubby after the game!

Scotty Fischer -11- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday June 16th 2017 Round 10 - Athelstone Home MILESTONE GAME

Congratulations Walshy on a great achievement in playing 200 games for the Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club.

I remember playing footy with you on the “bottom oval” at Haslam in 1995, back then playing ruck, and dishing out bruising bumps to opposition players. Fast forward 11 years to your first year at the old scholars, playing with your brother up forward, and then to your first A Grade game against Payneham Norwood Union, again as a full forward. The latter half of your career has seen you return back to the ever-consistent ruckman in the mighty B Grade, where your footy talent and leadership has seen you become a dual Best and Fairest in both 2011 and 2016 seasons.

Off the field I think everyone know that you are happy to participate in all club functions, and are happy to milestone beer challenges. I hear we will have to wait a week to see you again polish off your 200 game jug skull.

It been an awesome decade at the mighty kings, and you’re a major reason for that!! You’re the clubman that has helped maintain the POSFC as a great club, both on and off the field. Your dedication to ensuring the club is left in a better position is truly admirable. Congratulations again, and have a great game on Saturday! And HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Lingy

Congratulations Walshy on reaching the 200 game milestone and life membership with the Kings!

You have been an exceptional club man for the Kings over the last decade. On the field, you have consistently given your midfielders silver service, whether from taps outs at stoppages or quick hands after a mark. Your resume speaks for itself with 2 B grade best and fairests, numerous podium finishes in the association medal and regular stints as captain.

Off the field your work is just as impressive, whether that be helping run the club as a member of the board or being the loudest supporter on the sidelines of the A grade. You’re the type of bloke every club needs.

I wish I could be out there playing with you on Saturday, but I will settle with running out a few choice words to you instead! Good luck for the game and Happy Birthday for Saturday as well!

I remember first meeting u all those years ago....at least 120kgs with frizzy afro hair helping coach the first XI cricket team. Gee I miss facing those slow short shit balls you used to send down...I used to think he’s doing well to play cricket then years later I find out he plays football as well. PembrokeFC07 is when the true friendship began. Although we didn’t play in the same team we definitely got along after football hours....can never forget those Kensi/Toowong Avenue days!! Unlike today you were always at training, not too late to a game but I reckon being hungover has followed you through 200 games! That being said you give 110% every game, ultra consistent and always stick up for your team mates. Your voice/actions can be heard/felt on and off the footy field which shows you’re a true clubman. You don’t dazzle us with blistering speed but in turn you provide workmanship qualities to the team and always make a contest. I still don’t reckon those big feet have leaped off the ground yet...... and I can’t see it happening anytime soon. Your brother paddy got the full jug down his throat, albeit for 5secs before it all came back up, but I seem to remember a lot spilling out the sides on your 100th skull so hopefully you do it properly this time. All the best mate

Name: Tom Moir Nicknames: Moisty/KFC Towelette Age: 24 Occupation: Student/admin clerk Marital status: Single Guernsey Number: 22

Which AFL team do you follow? Crows

On field goal for 2016? Win 5/9 of the remaining games

Off field goal for 2016? Cut down on pastries from the 24 hour bakery, it’s become a problem. Pepps makes a mean butter chicken pie

Who will win the 2017 AFL Grand Final? Crows are looking good!

You play your 100th game for the Kings this weekend, congratulations! What does the milestone mean to you? Do you have a favourite game from the 99 so far? My favorite would have to be the 2016 preliminary final against Walkerville. It was probably the most difficult game I have played, it felt like both teams were just running on empty the whole last quarter which made it that much more satisfying to be able to hold on to our lead and make it into the GF.

You have been an underrated backman over the last couple of years, do you think this is your best position on the ground? What’s your take on last years B Grade GF loss, is it still something that drives your footy? What do you think the B Grade needs to get back up to the top of table? I definitely feel most comfortable in the back lines, although I will take any opportunity to spend a bit of time in the midfield or kick some goals up forward. Just making the grand final was a huge boost to my motivation. I think it’s only when you actually make it to a GF that it sinks in how rare they are and how much of an achievement it would be to win one. It’s hard to say what the team needs to do in order to get back to the top of our game in short but it has been really good to see everyone staying positive and still working towards getting better. Most of the team has had a taste of a grand final so I know the squad won’t be content with being so far from the top of the ladder.

Your nickname is probably the most notable across the club, where did Moisty come from? You have built up quite a few nicknames over the years, can you please list them. Which is your favourite? Unfortunately there’s no real good story behind Moisty other than it sounds similar to Moir. It’s a bit of a curse that I can’t give a good explanation as to where it came from because I think people then come up with their own ideas of how it came about. There are too many to list, I’m sure any of my school mates would be more than happy to reel a few of them off if you asked. -14- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday June 16th 2017 Round 10 - Athelstone Home

I hear you are quite the guitarist, recently playing at your sisters wedding! How did it all go, any tears from the audience? What is your go to song? We are looking for someone to play at this years End of Season Dinner, are you a chance? No tears which I was pretty happy with considering I tried to keep the tunes pretty upbeat. I think Everlong would have to be my go to song but I wouldn’t be much of a guitarist if I didn’t take any opportunity to strum a bit of Wonderwall. If the EOSD crowd want a tune or two then I guess I’ll have to deliver.

Who are the three most underrated Kings Players you’ve seen during your time at the club? Lucas Allan – Highly underrated. Good all round footballer and can run just about anyone off their feet, hopefully that broken arm heals up sooner rather than later and we can get him back on the park! Scott Fisher – The combination of playing a couple seasons back in Lameroo and having a tough run with injuries means a lot of the Kings squad hasn’t really had an opportunity to see how good he is until this season. Oscar Ogai – Cool and calm in any situation and somehow has the ability to run out full games through the midfield despite going missing every pre-season.

If you could take one Kings team mate away with you on holiday who would it be and why? Would love to get away for bit with Tucks, I’ve heard some great stories.

What is your specialty meal to cook? Bircher Muesli

If you could appear in any reality TV show which would it be? Please Marry My Boy

What is your dream holiday destination? Skiing in Japan

What is your dream job? Dietitian

What is the coaches favourite saying? Moisty, I like your hustle, that’s why it was so hard to cut you

Best AFL/SANFL/VFL player of all time? Garry Ablett Jnr

Who is your Doppelganger? I was mistaken for Paddy Trutwin recently, but I do still get called Woody every now and t hen on the track.

Which King is most likely to: - Take their top off at training? Tom O’Flaherty - Snapchat you a photo of their dog? Oscar Richardson. - Sing at Karaoke? Jaiden Pengelly - Be late to a game? Jason Raz - Take a mid-season vacation? Oscar Ogai

Which AFL team do you follow? Port

On field goal for 2016? Finish off the year better than we started

Who will win the 2017 AFL Grand Final? Hopefully Port, but I think GWS.

You play your 200th game for the Kings this weekend, that’s a terrific effort, congratulations! What does the milestone mean to you? Do you have a favourite game from the 199 so far? I’ve never taken much notice of milestones, but it’s pretty cool to be able to make it to 200 games in a Kings jumper. There isn’t one particular game that sticks out, but last year’s finals series was a highlight, except for the GF of course. Beating Mitcham, Walkerville and Athelstone to make the GF was a terrific effort.

You are known for you work on the Board, turning snags at the Haslam Oval BBQ and crushing headlocks at the Hood but you have also been a stalwart of the B grade giving first use to our midfield for over 10 years. Did you always play ruck growing up? Who has been your toughest opponent over the years? If you could take one attribute from a team mate and add it to your game what would it be? No I was a ‘big boned’ full forward for most of my school days and I would occasionally go in the ruck for throw ins/ups in the forward line. I think I fell into the ruck role because we lacked talls and I wasn’t playing particularly well at full forward at the time.

The toughest opponent I played against was probably the Phos Camden ruckman from many years ago. He was taller, bigger, faster and loved the big ovals.

Speed! I’ve got none of it L.

Everyone knows you love the humble Birkenstock shoe, when did you first slip into a pair? How many pairs do you own? What are some of the most formal occasions that you’ve managed to get away with wearing your ‘birkies’? Most comfortable shoe bar none! I think the first time this glorious piece of footwear crossed my path was when I was 14. I’ve always had pretty big feet and Mum always struggled to find shoes that would fit me, so one day when we were at the Central Market she dragged me into the shoe shop just to see what they had. The shop turned out to be -16- THE PEMBROKE KINGS PEMBROKE OLD SCHOLARS FOOTBALL CLUB IT’S GOOD TO BE GREEN 2017 pembrokekings.com.au Friday June 16th 2017 Round 10 - Athelstone Home the only seller of Birkenstocks in Adelaide and as they say the rest is history.

I own 5 pairs at the moment - 1 for general wearing, 1 for wearing to/from work and more formal occasions, 1 for mowing the lawn, 1 for fishing and 1 new pair to take over when my oldest gets retired.

There have been a couple of occasions when I’ve forgotten my other shoes for work and spent the day working in my birkies. Other than that, I wore birkies to the law school ball many moons ago and they have made an appearance at a friend’s wedding, but that wasn’t a black tie dress code. My wife did say I could wear them for our wedding but I thought that would be a step too far.

With the next federal election not likely until 2019 it seems the Liberals will be in power for some time, what do you make of the current Government and the direction they are taking Australia? Not many politicians from any party appear to be too popular at the moment, is there something wrong with Australian politics as a whole? As a close friend of politician Christopher Pyne, do you know if the Liberal Party are planning another celebration at The Hood anytime soon? Never going to live this one down. Vickie Chapman held a function there last week so I suppose there’s every chance they’ll be holding their state election party at The Hood next year.

I could spend many nights at The Hood going over everything that I think is wrong with today’s politics lol. I have a lot of time for Turnbull and I thought he would make a good Prime Minister, but unfortunately the conservative side of his party and party donors continue to undermine him and destabilize the Government. If he had stronger support from within his own party I think we would see a better functioning Government.

Not just Australian politics, in general I think society has been extremely let down by the world’s leaders and elite. Corruption is rife in politics, and when people like Donald Trump can be voted into power you know there’s a serious problem.

One of the biggest issues with Australian politics is the remuneration structure for politicians. Get rid of the golden tickets and just pay them well. If you start offering wages that are commensurate to what can be earnt in the private sector you will attract the best candidates for the role. At the moment we have a lot of politicians that sit in parliament just waiting for their pensions to come in. These people need to be moved aside and replaced with fresh blood that’s enthusiastic about tackling the challenges this country faces.

Who are the best three Kings Players you’ve seen play during your time at the club? It’s very difficult to pick 3, but I would probably go with Boothy, Fritta and Starkey. Jim Pinkney deserves to be in the conversation and Brooka, M Fish and Fras were all special players before injuries crept in.

If you could take one Kings team mate away with you on holiday who would it be and why? Michael Fischer because I know he would get in more trouble than me.

What is your specialty meal to cook? Hmmm maybe veal parmigiana

If you could appear in any reality TV show which would it be? Appearing in a Japanese reality show would be interesting …….
