Nonduduzo Ngcongo reports on the implementation of stormwater projects which are expected to in minimise future flooding in the City.

HE Municipality’s Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee has Tapproved the transfer of R42 million to the Roads and Stormwater Maintenance Department, which falls under the Engineering Unit, to perform stormwater network cleaning and inspections as part of plans to minimise the impact of flooding in the City. Deputy Head of the Roads and Stormwater Maintenance Department Thanda Zulu said a total of twelve companies have been appointed to perform stormwater cleaning and inspections. In addition, a separate contractor who is an expert in the field, was also appointed to undertake pre and post inspections of the stormwater network. Zulu said they will work in various regions of eThekwini including north central, south central, and west central covering several townships and suburbs over a period of two years. “Most of the contractors are already onsite with many assuming duties at the beginning of July with others starting at the end of July. Our core objective of implementing this initiative is to ensure that the City’s stormwater network functions effectively,” he said. Zulu said it was crucial that the City urgently implements a practical stormwater management strategy to develop sustainable stormwater systems. This will prevent the accumulation of stagnant water which will minimise the threat of flooding as well as protecting the environment.
