THUNDER BAY Chapter H.O.G.® # 9115

October 2017 - From The Director Well, another year on the road is quickly coming to an end. What a Great Year we had, aside from a little more than normal rainfall, we still lots of good riding days! We saw lots of new faces at the events this year, it is always good to meet fellow enthusiasts that share the same passion as we all do, so if you see someone new, say Hi and welcome them along for the ride! As one year closes off, the members that sit on the committee start working on next year’s events, so if you have any input, please feel free to contact one of us! While we are on the subject of the committee, I would like to personally say THANK YOU to everyone that gives their time and effort into running this Group, without these people, we would not exist. They are truly a GREAT bunch, and give selflessly of their time to try to make every members riding experience better! As winter looms down on us, remember that we are a very social bunch, and there is still lots going on through the off season! From Wing Nights to Biker Bingo Bowling, we try to still have fun, and I guess if we can’t ride, might as well Party!! If you haven’t attended our off season events, give them a try, we would love to see your smiling face! In closing, I would like to thank you all for being members of this Chapter, you are a GREAT GROUP of people and I know my life would be different for the worse, not having met you all! You are not just friends….You are ! Keep the Rubber side down Folks! Cheers, Trent

Do you know your Harley-Davidson®?

By Paul Reubsam

This month’s questions are: 1. When was the K-model produced? 2. What distinction did Harley-Davidson® claim in 1918? 3. What was special about the Hydra Glide? 4. What does AMF stand for? 5. What does CR in XLCR stand for?

by Rob K. National Rally – Ottawa Canada The rally reached its capacity of 1,500 registrants a week before the start. What I did have was a really fun trip to the rally with five other people. We visited the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre in Sault Ste. Marie. We rode through Algonquin Park. We saw a monument to Janusz Żurakowski, the first test pilot of the Avro Arrow. We enjoyed a sweet treat at the first location of the iconic Beaver Tails Pastry shop. We rode on the primary highways through the Ontario Highlands into Renfrew. Seventy-five bucks and I got a pin. What a deal? The shirt was extra, you had a short window to reply at the end of June, the colour red was not available even though it was in the picture and I thought the graphic was rather lame. However, it was a great party, the bands both nights were awesome, the food was plentiful and pretty good. I had the opportunity to chat with a lot of people. On the last night we still had not run into Ian. We were chatting with a couple from Windsor when he showed up. Very cool. We then got to hear first-hand from Jim how he parked his bike on a culvert on the hill coming down from the Quimet Canyon parking area. I think that it’s too bad that there is no date on the rally pin. For those who care this was the 19th Canadian National Rally, if the previous rallies we have been to were correct. What was cool was that the first Canadian Rally was in Ottawa in 1993. That year was the 90th Anniversary of H-D®; the 10th Anniversary of HOG® and the first Ride Home. This year was the 150th birthday for Canada and a celebration of 100 years of Harley-Davidson® in Canada.

Great Lakes Rally Starting a few years ago and fully this year, they did away with state or provincial rallies and had only “regional” rallies. In Canada we have 5 regions; Western, Prairies, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic. In the US they have six I believe. One that encompasses the states near us, is the Great Lakes region. This rally was very well organized and in an area without a Harley dealer. Interesting program and rides that were posted well in advance of the rally. They had five self-guided rides into Canada. We had two great (weather) days prior to the rally, riding to the Soo. Then the first two days of the rally, RAIN and lots of it. People coming over the Mackinaw said in addition to the rain, there was lots of wind through the straits. The entertainment each night was very good. Stunt riders performed in fairly heavy rain and got lots of applause. The riders used Sportsters. Due to the rain we missed out on a guided ride in order to do something else. The ride we eventually did on

www.thunderbayhog.com

the way home was to Whitefish Point, where there is a lighthouse and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. We have been trying to get there for several trips and run out of time or have gone a different way. Another ride for your bucket list, is H-58 between Munising and Grand Marais, Michigan. Not the most direct route, but part is through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Leo Boz and his group rode this one too. On the way home, we completed the circle route of Lake Superior, again.

Highway 129 ON – Ontario’s “Tail of the Dragon” Our plan was to stay in Wawa for the night and ride Hwy 101 to Chapleau and then Hwy 129 to Thessalon. Well due to poor planning on my part, we were not able to stay in Wawa. Since we left a little late and spent the day doing things on the way to Wawa, we arrived in the Soo at about 8:00 PM. We were getting hungry so we had a nice, but late supper. We now had a whole day to ride whatever. The first leg was to ride to Thessalon, fuel up and then ride half a tank north on Hwy 129. Got stopped a little short, due to blasting along the road and rather than wait and wait again on the return, we just turned around. Then we were hungry; go figure. Rode to Blind River, lunch at Timmies and time for gas. Went to observe Keith’s brother’s boat sitting lonely “on the hard” in the boatyard. On our way back to the Soo, we ventured onto St. Joseph Island. Went and saw the fort and had lots of time before the gates closed at 5:00.

Milwaukee Rally The Rally is really two concurrent rallies involving the Harley Museum, the local dealerships and the casino. One is open to all brands and the other was a HOG® Rally. The schedule of the National HOG® Rally had lots of rides and event opportunities, , plus the Harley Museum and the power train facility. Because there’s this other rally also going on, the number of bikes around is huge. This was the first US National Rally in nine years. For $25 dollars we got a pin, patch, t-shirt, access to the museum, The Race of Gentlemen exhibit, tour of 3600 W. Juneau Avenue, access to bands at the museum every night, access to bands at every local dealer ever night, exclusive access to test rides of the 2018 model year Harley-Davidson’s and access to guided rides led by HOG® chapters. As for the demo’s they appeared to have 6 trucks there with the bikes, and a few were on display at the museum. The Race of Gentlemen exhibit at the Harley-Davidson® Museum was a must see. This was a 2½ month exhibit that ended on September 4th. The Race of Gentlemen (TROG) is something that’s been going on for a few years that involves racing on the beach in New Jersey using cars from 1935 or older, and motorcycles 1947 or older. American made machines with the look and feel of the vehicles they would have raced during the late 40s and early 50s. The motorcycles have to have 47 or older engine, period fasteners, period hand shift and foot clutch. Certainly conjured up the idea of travelling to New Jersey. The most interesting ride was a guided ride with about 70 bikes on back roads and interstates to Vandervest Harley-Davidson®. After a quick lunch we had access to Lambeau Field and the Packers Hall of Fame.

2018 Milwaukee Rally Every 5 years coinciding with the anniversary of Harley-Davidson® there is a rally in Milwaukee. Annually the local dealers in Milwaukee host the Milwaukee Rally which is essentially a three day poker run with the casino and the H-D Museum. Harley has said that they are planning for the 115th Anniversary. They have been dropping hints of what we might expect for the anniversary and other regional or riding rallies and have said that information would be forthcoming soon after this year’s rallies are done. Best I can suggest is to keep an open mind and wait and see what they offer. Meet old friends and make new ones at the Veterans Park Welcome Home Party with field games, food trucks and a beer garden on August 29, 2018 115th Anniversary Harley-Davidson Parade, September 2, 2018. Thousands of riders. Countless spectators. One unforgettable experience.

Tomahawk Ride for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and Open House I have heard about the ride, party and open house for years but have never had money, time and opportunity. Well by the end of the summer we had run out of money but had the time and an opportunity. That’s why we have “credit” cards, right? Part of the Harley-Davidson® manufacturing process is done in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. For two days they have an open house as part of the Tomahawk Ride. Part of the party raises money for MDA and part for the Tomahawk Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friday night they have a parade over an 18 mile loop. This year there were 732 motorcycles in the parade. We did one of the fun runs and spent more than half the day going places. I would definitely spend the full weekend there in the future.

My comments on ABC’s of Touring The ABC’s of Touring is a program of the Harley Owners Group®. It is part of your membership. There is no extra charge and one of the few benefits that you can use each year with minimal travel. In past years as few as 5 photos got you something. This year it still takes only 5 photos to get you something, but for more than that first level, it takes a minimum of 51 points for which you will earn a $25 Norscot gift card. Last year 26 points would have gotten you the base ABCs pin and patch plus the bandana and carabiner set. At 52 points you would get all that, plus a premium selfie stick. For the next level at 78 points or more you also got a waterproof duffle bag. My original thought was that the value this year is considerably less than even last year. I guess their expenditure is about the same for “prizes” as last year but I suspect that increasing the minimum number of pictures for the “second level” likely reduces participation, I hope that I am wrong. This change does let the individual choose which prize(s) they receive. Only about 1,500 people in North America have participated in the past years when you could actually look at the participant list. Maybe 10-15 percent of those are from Canada.

www.thunderbayhog.com

It’s also much harder to easily participate in our area since we have about three “counties”, where Minnesota has many more to choose from for that level of government.

I will be following the events on HOG.com for ideas on what to do next year. There a lot of places that you can get to that are two days or less riding time from Thunder Bay. That’s why we went some of the places we did, because they were “a day away”. The reason for HOG® is still to ride and have fun. We sometimes lose sight of that, when trying so hard to organize stuff. This summer we have definitely contributed to the economy. We rode a few other places; mostly to coffee shops, craft breweries or wineries. Next year maybe DDD will be the focus.

Time: 2:30 Distance: 170 km This route is 170 km and will take about 2 and a half hours plus rest or picture stops. The route starts and ends at Thunder Bay Harley- Davidson. This ride is a favourite with many motorcycle riders in the Thunder Bay area, both cruiser, touring, standard and sport bike. Devon Road to Highway 588 is 48 km of paved roadway, generally in good condition, includes straight stretch, curves, hills and lots of great scenery. Enjoyed best in the summer or fall when the winter sand has been washed off of the road. Be careful in spring because there may be hazardous conditions, including damaged pavement from spring washouts, sand on curves and so on. Watch out for animals, particularly deer in the morning and evening. Watch out for vehicles at corners, especially during season when you may encounter trucks with boats on trailers. The basic ride starts at Thunder Bay Harley-Davidson (Arthur Street). Food and refreshments are available at: Galaxy Bowling, AJ’s Trading Post, Silver Mountain Station, ice cream, coffee and restaurants in Kakabeka Falls or the Stanley Tavern. From Thunder Bay Harley-Davidson turn left on Highway 61 toward the border. Turn right on Highway 593 and follow to Silver Mountain Station. Turn right on Highway 588. In Nolalu you can turn left and follow Highway 590 to Kakabeka Falls or proceed straight toward Hymers. At Highway 595 you can turn left and get to Kakabeka Falls or continue straight ahead for Stanely.

The dirty dozen!!! Len & Ruth Brickell, Brad & Karen Holbrough, Tom & Maryann Ginty, Joe & Gail Roussin, Kat & Gary Ward, Rob & Joanne Kavanagh What a great ride to Lutsen Resort for Meet in the Middle with Duluth HOG® Chapter.... 3 trikes, 5 bikes and a glorious day! Although temperatures were cool when we left, and most of us were dressed for rain, we got to Lutsen in 2 hours and 20 minutes, including the time at the border and gassing up at Ryden’s! Must be a record. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch with the folks from the Duluth Chapter and the Laurentian Divide Chapter (Eveleth). There were lots of stories told about any number of subjects. Always a fun event!

Wait five minutes, maybe the weather will be better! In spite of cancelling the ride on Friday evening, many hardy souls decided to ride anyway! We had 8 bikes, 2 trikes and 11 adventurous souls, who enjoyed a warm sunny day on the Gunflint. The road to the end was completely dry and fun to ride at posted speed. We saw several other bike groups enjoying the day too. We enjoyed a tasty lunch at Trail Center (ask Derrick who also ordered the pie, as did Len). A wonderful day to ride with old and new friends! Truly an example of Carpe Diem. Thanks for taking pictures Joslyn!

Many of the trees are just starting to turn colour. The absence of maples along major potions of the road, means very little red in the foliage. Periodically we would see a lone maple along the road with red leaves. Thank you to Joslyn White for taking pictures on the ride. She operates a selfie-stick with amazing skill too! We spent an enjoyable day with this group, and headed home across the border around supper time. Hopefully we will have a few more days like this to enjoy before we have to get ready for winter!

The Thunder Bay HOG® Chapter was represented at the Ottawa National Rally by Ruth & Len Brickell, Joanne & Rob Kavanagh, Val Lafontaine, John Fiddler, John & Kim Salamon, Frank Pascuzzo & his cousin John Pascuzzo, and Ian Macdonald (also from Sarnia). The self guided rides took us places we had not been; and evening gatherings were packed with attendees. Shuttle buses allowed us to enjoy the evening without worrying about getting around. By coincidence, we were able to see La Machine; the only showing in Canada. We caught up with the dragon and spider while walking through Byward Market, on the way back to our hotel after a Rally evening party.

The Story – The Spirit of the Dragon-Horse, with Stolen Wings “From the ninth level of heaven, Long Ma—a cosmic creature who is half-horse, half-dragon—keeps watch over humanity. But a sinister force that has taken the form of a giant spider slips into his home as he sleeps, burning his wings and robbing his sacred temple. From this time forth, the Dragon-Horse roams the seven seas in search of his missing temple. The giant spider, Kumo, takes refuge in Ottawa, the mother-city of all spiders. Buried deep beneath the waves, the temple remains concealed. But the recent work undertaken by the city to build Ottawa’s new transit line has disturbed Kumo, and she is forced to emerge from the ground. Her power depleted, the spider becomes vulnerable and loses control of the temple, which reappears in the city. Alerted by this apparition, Long Ma sets out on the route taken by Champlain several centuries earlier, with the intention of recovering his temple of travel, a shrine that he alone has the power to properly restore.”

Long Ma Part dragon and part horse, Long Ma stands 12 metres high, 5 metres wide and weighs 45 tons. Although his body is made of wood and steel, we quickly fall under his spell and with him on an ethereal level. From the top of his hooves, he trots with elegance, gallops, rears himself up and lies down. With his piercing gaze, Long Ma scours the crowd and interacts with them as his neck rises, lowers and oscillates from left to right. His ribcage swells under the pressure of his lungs. But be careful, the

www.thunderbayhog.com

warm breath coming out of his nostrils could quickly be transformed into fire coming out of his mouth.

Kumo Beautiful and repulsive, aggressive and gentle, Kumo, the giant spider, will give you chills. Her eight legs and body that synchronize as she crawls around town gracefully. Like a dancer, she wanders, steps over trees, streetlights and bus shelters… At rest, she is 5.7 metres high and 6 metres wide, but she can reach up to 13 metres when in motion. Fully outstretched, she is about 20 metres long. Will she extinguish Long Ma’s flames with the water deployed from her abdomen?

About La Machine Company La Machine is a street theatre company founded in 1999 and leaded by François Delarozière. Its conception is thanks to artists, technicians and theatre designers working together for the construction of unusual theatre objects. Today, La Machine develops many projects in the field of urban development as well as for street theatre. At the heart of La Machine’s artistic approach, movement is read as a language, as a source of emotion. Through each of these living architectures, the idea is to dream of tomorrow’s cities, and thanks to this, transform the way we look at our towns. To bring its creations to life, La Machine has set up two workshops, one in Nantes and one in Tournefeuille. They bring together many different trades and crafts from theatre and the arts, to industry and advanced technology. People and their skills are the very essence of the creative process.

Do you know your Harley-Davidson®?

By Paul Reubsam

The answers for this issue’s trivia questions are as follows: 1. The K-model was produced from 1952-1956. 2. The distinction Harley-Davidson® claimed in 1918 was the “biggest selling bike manufacturer in the world”. 3. The Hydra Glide was special because it had hydraulic front forks. 4.
