  • 2012 APA National Conference Mobile Workshop to Santa Catalina
2012 APA National Conference Mobile Workshop (W045) Santa Catalina Island: A Microcosm of Small Town Planning Issues in the West By Dale Powers, AICP, Immediate Past Chair Small Town and Rural Planning Division (STaR) American Planning Association As many of you know, different parts of the country face unique planning challenges not experienced elsewhere. In the American West, there are several planning challenges: x In resort communities with upscale housing, a struggle for affordable housing for residents who work at the resort exists. x Transportation is a big issue for residents of island communities with limited opportunities to work and shop. x Water is a BIG issue in the American West, with interstate compacts determining how much water each state can use, as well as controversy over agricultural vs. residential usage. x Balancing good land stewardship with property rights and creating economic opportunities for residents. x Accommodating growth in resort communities with geographic limitations for outward expansion. Each one of those challenges would make a great topic for a mobile workshop – especially with the 2012 National Conference being held this coming April in Los Angeles. To have all of those topics covered in one mobile workshop is a good use of your agency’s training dollars. “Santa Catalina Island: A Microcosm of Small Town Planning Issues in the West”, on Tuesday, April 17, does all of that and more! For much less than the cost of several mobile workshops, you will experience firsthand how Santa Catalina Island and the City of Avalon have addressed these issues. As well, your learning experience will be enhanced by the breath-taking beauty of Santa Catalina Island: (left) Avalon, California – on Santa Catalina Island; (right) Catalina Casino In addition to actually seeing how Santa Catalina Island addresses each of the five challenges listed above, you’ll also be intrigued by learning more about: x Why there is freshwater and saltwater service to each structure serviced by City sewer and water.

416 W. 6th Street San Pedro CA 90731 310-729-9828 www.VisitSanPedro.org We look forward to welcoming you and your clients to San Pedro! It’s a great place for a visit, a meeting, or an event. And we’re here to help you. We’re Visit San Pedro, the independent visitor services organization for the region that includes San Pedro, the Los Ange- les Harbor and Palos Verdes Peninsula communities, and Catalina Island. First-time visitors are surprised that there’s so much to see and do in our area. Whether it’s sightseeing, leisurely shopping, or adventure—or all of those—we’ve got what people want. And we’re in a great location to access all of Southern California’s tremendous attractions. Plus, we’re a great location to visit before or after a cruise. We’re home to the Los Angeles World Cruise Terminal, the largest on the West Coast. San Pedro is a great place for meetings up to conference size with really great services available. And we can handle very large events, like concerts, with plentiful space and great facilities. Our hotel rates are reasonable, our food is great, our attractions are plentiful. We have history, we have great service and a commitment to making everyone’s stay memorable and pleasurable. And please note that we are not a typical convention and visitors bureau. We do not receive government funding and we are selective about the businesses and organizations that we partner with. They must meet high standards of service so that we can recommend them without reservation.

  • CHAPTER 3. CULTURAL SETTING Introduction
Martinez, D. et al 2015 Draft Chapter 3: Cultural Setting. From the Metropole Vault Replacement Project Report. Prepared for Southern California Edison. Cultural Setting CHAPTER 3. CULTURAL SETTING Desiree Martinez (Cogstone) Introduction This section presents an overview of the cultural sequences, the ethnography of the Tongva and a brief discussion of the previous archaeological investigations conducted on Santa Catalina Island and within Avalon. Based on linguistic, ethnographic, and archaeological cultural affiliation, prior to the arrival of the Spanish, Santa Catalina Island was occupied by the Gabrielino (Tongva) people (McCawley 2002; Reddy 2006; Strudwick et al. 2007). In addition to Pimu (Santa Catalina Island), their geographical territory included large portions of Los Angeles County, the northern part of Orange County, small sections of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties as well as the southern Channel Islands of Santa Barbara, Kiinkepar (San Clemente), and Haraasnga (San Nicolas) (Figure 3-1). The term Gabrielino was used by the Spanish to identify Native Americans who were baptized at the Mission San Gabriel during the Mission Period (1769-1834). Prior to European contact, there was no overarching label that identified people who lived in what is now Gabrielino traditional territory. Instead, people identified themselves as belonging to a particular village. For example, early accounts state that Santa Catalina Island was referred to as Pimu (Pemú'nga or Pimungna) by the Native people who lived there (Reid 1968). Those from Pimu would have called themselves Pimuvit or Pimubit.1 However, as a result of their relocation during the Mission Period, most members of the Gabrielino community no longer identified themselves by their villages but by the term Gabrielino.
