(Photo by Todd Williamson/Invision, file) (AP)—Netflix's newest original series will be science- fiction from the duo behind the "The Matrix" trilogy. Netflix announced Wednesday that it will stream "Sense8" late next year for subscribers. The series is the first foray into television for Andy and Lana Wachowski, the filmmaking siblings who directed "The Matrix" and last year's "Cloud Atlas." Netflix called the 10-episode series "a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted." The show runner will be J. Michael Straczynski, creator of "Babylon 5," which aired for five seasons in the 1990s. Netflix made its biggest splash with an original series last month with the debut of the political thriller "House of Cards," starring Kevin Spacey. 1 / 2 APA citation: Wachowskis to make sci-fi series for Netflix (2013, March 27) retrieved 27 September 2021 from https://phys.org/news/2013-03-wachowskis-sci-fi-series-netflix.html This document is subject to copyright. Abstract When Netflix launched in April 1998, Internet video was in its infancy. Eighteen years later, Netflix has developed into the first truly global Internet TV network. Many books have been written about the five broadcast networks – NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, and the CW – and many about the major cable networks – HBO, CNN, MTV, Nickelodeon, just to name a few – and this is the fitting time to undertake a detailed analysis of how Netflix, as the preeminent Internet TV networks, has come to be. This book, then, combines historical, industrial, and textual analysis to investigate, contextualize, and historicize Netflix's development as an Internet TV network. The book is split into four chapters. The first explores the ways in which Netflix's development during its early years a DVD-by-mail company – 1998-2007, a period I am calling "Netflix as Rental Company" – lay the foundations for the company's future iterations and successes. During this period, Netflix adapted DVD distribution to the Internet, revolutionizing the way viewers receive, watch, and choose content, and built a brand reputation on consumer-centric innovation.

Mannheim, 10.08.2020 ii Abstract Digital media has become ubiquitous and immensely shapes communitarisation, and thus identity construction. As media does not rely on physical border crossing to bring us in con- tact with different subject positions, traditional forms of mobility are not necessary to include people in transnational discourse and narratives of transnational identification. However, scholarly attention has been focused on discourses of transnational identities tied to tradition- al transgressions of national space.

  • Sense8 Roundtable
Moya Bailey, micha cárdenas, Laura Horak, Lokeilani Kaimana, Cáel M. Keegan, Geneveive Newman, Roxanne Samer, and Raffi Sarkissian Sense8 Roundtable Abstract In “Sense8: A Roundtable,” eight scholars, myself included, think through key questions regarding one of today’s most impressive trans-produced mainstream media productions, Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s Netflix series Sense8, which has yet to receive substantive scholarly attention. We analyze how Sense8 both follows and breaks from the Wachowskis’ prior approach to narrative; offers a distinctly trans* engagement with the histories of cinematic and televisual genres; often relies on western colonial conceptions for its global imagination and marginalizes characters of color; and theorizes contemporary media spectatorship in its appeal to affect and eroticism. We do so believing Sense8 to be an important cultural interlocutor, not only with regard to the exploration of transgender representation but also questions of sexuality, race, and capital in the global present. However, we also share a conviction that the series’ potentiality still leaves substantial room for growth. We take a critical approach to our collective analysis, seeing in the series a glimmer of the kind of global utopian envisioning very much needed in our ceaselessly dystopian present. The first season of J. Michael Straczynski and was the prime decree of those reviewers who were Lana and Lilly Wachowski’s Sense8 was released looking to witness a similar “seamless marriage on Netflix on June 5, 2015. The series’ critical of style and substance.”2 Those reviewers who did reception was mixed. Many found Sense8—which appreciate Sense8 were those who saw the series as tells the story of eight individuals from across purposefully demanding the labor of an attentive the globe, who, having recently been “birthed” by audience.

Abstract This quantitative study examines the diversity of women1 included in music videos with relationships between two women through a comparative content analysis. Informed by intersectionality and queer theory, this study investigated the racial diversity, body diversity, gender performance, and tropes present in music videos with queer women couples (n=473) through a quantitative content analysis. This study also compared the diversity and tropes present in music videos made by musicians who identify as lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, and queer women and music videos made by non-queer musicians. Quantitative data was collected and reported for musicians who identify outside of the gender binary (e.g. non-binary, gender non- conforming, agender), but they were not included in the comparative analysis2. This thesis reports that the majority of women included in these music videos are white (62.79%), thin (98.73%), feminine (79.07%). In addition, the music videos often contained themes that exploit queer women’s sexuality either by a non-queer artist trying to gain queer women’s viewership or by portraying queer women’s relationships as for men’s pleasure.

  • A 'People to Come': Sense8 As (Critical) 'Minor Cinema'
76 Bert Olivier Prof Bert Olivier, A ‘people to come’: Department of Philosophy, University Sense8 as (critical) of the Free State, Bloemfontein ‘minor cinema’ E-mail: [email protected] First submission: 4 November 2019 Acceptance: 5 August 2020 DOI: http://dx.doi. org/10.18820/24150479/aa52i2/5 Published: 31 December 2020 ISSN:0587-2405 e-ISSN: 2415-0479 Acta Academica • The present paper is an elaboration on the Wachowski 2020 52(2): 76-105 sisters’ (Lana’s and Lilly’s) prescient Netflix series, © Creative Commons Sense8, with a view to demonstrating its visionary With Attribution (CC-BY) character as far as a ‘people to come’ is concerned. At the same time it is argued that Sense8 represents what might be called ‘critical (minor) cinema’, insofar as it functions in a sustained manner to critique extant society in its hierarchical, ideologically compromised, racist, gender-biased, ecologically destructive guise, pointing the way to what society might be if a ‘different form of reason’ (Boyne) were to obtain at interpersonal, inter-gender and ultimately inter-species levels. The poststructuralist critical theory of Deleuze and Guattari is employed to achieve this end, particularly their notion of ‘minor literature/cinema’ and ‘assemblage’, in conjunction with a number of other concepts with which it is interconnected, such as the ‘rhizome’, ‘arboreal’, ‘deterritorialisation’ and ‘line of flight’. Briefly, what this strategy brings to light, is that mainstream society, with its defining ‘arboreal’ (tree-like, hierarchical) structures, responds negatively to difference of all kinds, particularly if such differences seem to pose a threat to its cratological supremacy.
