U15 Schools Championship Before Losing to Magdalene College SURREY SCHOOLS’ CRICKET ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Supporting Surrey Schools’ Cricket (FOR DETAILS SEE BACK PAGE) www.ssca.org.uk OFFICERS 2014 - 2015 President: Edward Handley MBE Chairman: Phil Everest Vice-Chairman: Richy Riseboro Hon. Secretary: Simon Beck Hon. Treasurer: Mike Barry Hon. Competitions Secretaries: Phil Everest Jim Hammond Richard Riseboro Duncan White Hon. Primary Secretary: Charles South N.B. The Executive Council also co-opted Mrs Benta Hickley. VICE PRESIDENTS: J.D. Andrews B. Jones M.J. Stewart OBE B.J. Aspital R.D.V. Knight OBE D.M. Verney J.H. Edrich MBE A.R. Pannell D.M. Ward M.J. Edwards P.I. Pocock D.C. Haywood R.J. Somerford SURREY SCHOOLS’ CRICKET ASSOCIATION thanks the following organisations for their support and assistance during the past year ESCA, RAM International, Surrey CCC, Surrey Cricket Foundation, Surrey Cricket Trust & also thanks the following clubs and schools for the use of facilities Banstead CC, CoL Freemen’s School, Cumnor House School, Horsley & Send CC, Malden Wanderers CC, Parkside School, Reigate Priory CC, Surrey CCC, Trinity School, Whitgift School Chairman’s Remarks: The last year has seen the sad passing of 3 of our longest-serving Vice-Presidents, David Fletcher (previously Manager of Surrey YC), Denis Jacobs and, recently, John Cope. Denis, always a champion of young cricketers from State schools, and a founding member of the Surrey Cricket Council, maintained his enthusiasm for youth cricket right up until his death last November. His family have now established The Denis Jacobs Youth Cricket Trust to support talented young cricketers. Regrettably, our Hon Treasurer, Mike Barry, and also Duncan White, have been forced to relinquish their posts due to failing health. I thank them both for many years of valuable service to this Association, and wish them well in their retirement. Entries for the inter-school competitions increased again for the 5th successive year. The weather was also very kind, allowing all competitions to be completed on time, with the exception of the 3 Plate Competitions. Trinity & Whitgift won 2 competitions each, with the other trophies going to Reed’s, Fullbrook, St George’s College, Cumnor House and Rokeby. Surrey schools did not fair well in the National competitions. Rokeby take pride of place by reaching the ESCA U11 Hardball Finals Day, but could only finish 4th behind Twyford School, King’s Hall (Taunton), and Leicester GS. Whitgift reached the Regional Final of the ECB/ESCA U15 Schools Championship before losing to Magdalene College. In the ECB/ESCA U15 T20, Trinity lost to Dulwich College in the Regional semi-final, and also lost to Watford GS at the same stage of the David English U13 Cup. The Plate Finals were all due to be played in the last week of term and all involved Wallington CGS. The matches were postponed following the death of a Wallington CGS student on a school rugby tour to Canada. Pride of place among the Surrey CAG squads goes to the U17 Boys’ who won the Royal London U17 One-Day Cup. The U15 Boys’ reached the Final of the corresponding U15 competition before losing to Lancashire. The U14 Boys’ and the U13 Girls’ both topped their Regional groups. Further details of CAG cricket can be found towards the back of this booklet. In the professional game, Jason Roy made his England ODI debut, and Zafar Ansari was selected in a Test party for the first time, only to miss out through injury. Surrey took the Div 2 Championship to return to Division 1 for next year with Rory Burns passing 1000 Championship runs for the first time. The Curran brothers grabbed most of the headlines with Tom being joint leading wicket-taker in Div 2, selected for the ECB EDP squad for the winter and also voted PCA Young Player of the Year. Younger brother Sam started the season as Surrey U17 captain, was called in to the 1st XI in July following injuries to so many seam bowlers, and was ever present in all forms of the game for the rest of the season. He became the youngest player to take 5 wkts in an innings on First Class debut, and richly deserved his selection for England U19. There have also been honours for Surrey Women & Girls. Natalie Sciver is a regular member of the ECB Performance Squad, playing in all forms of the game. Bryony Smith has been selected for the England Women’s Academy, and Hannah Jones & Rhianna Southby are included in the England Women’s Development Programme. The Association acknowledges the support of Paul Taylor, Kim Price and the SCF Development Team, especially in working together to create the Schools Affiliation Package which is available to all schools affiliated to SSCA. The 4 Outer London Boroughs once again affiliated all their schools en bloc. The revised affiliation process created some confusion and additional work. It has been agreed to revert to the previous process for 2015-16. SCF also supports the annual Hobbs Trophy match, which, this year, reverted to the traditional 40-over format. The Surrey side, drawn from 10 different State schools, were asked to bat first. Freddie Boys (Glyn) and Cam Waters (Howard) got off to a good start, but when both were out in quick succession Surrey were 40-2 from 6 overs. The scoring rate slowed and although captain Rehan Ratnasabapathy (Blenheim) was batting well, the Surrey score at the halfway point was only 104-3. Scott Boxall (Woolmer Hill) joined his captain and, after playing himself in for a couple of overs, took the attack to the London bowlers. With Man-of-the Match Boxall scoring 80 from 45 balls, and Ratnasabapathy going on to 81 from 85, Surrey scored 149 from the last 15 overs to close on 272-7. In reply, the London Schools’ side raced to 70-2 from 10 overs. Steady bowling and tight fielding by the Surrey boys slowed the rate and the London innings closed on 222 in the 37th over. There were 2 wickets apiece for Dan Collett (Bishop David Brown), Achal Srivastav (Wilson’s) and Freddie Boys. Thanks to Paul Taylor and Kim Price managing the day and making presentations. SURREY STATE SCHOOLS’ -- Winners of the Hobbs Trophy 2015 A big vote of thanks is due to our President, Edward Handley MBE, for his continued support throughout the year, and also to Simon Beck, Mike Barry, Jim Hammond, & Richy Riseboro for all their work during the year. Although I was fortunate enough to be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s OSCA Ceremony at The Kia Oval, it would not have been possible without the support of these people and all their many predecessors over 40+ years. The Association also acknowledges the support given by Whitgift School over many years in so many ways, including hosting finals and meetings. In particular, especial thanks must go to Val Baxter at Whitgift, for her continued support over this past year. Phil Everest (Chairman) School Competitions Report Competition entries for 2015 were marginally up on 2014. Among the schools entering for the first time were Collingwood College, Esher CE HS, Glenthorne HS, St Peter’s Leatherhead, Surbiton HS Prep, and West Thornton Academy. In addition, there were a number of returning schools (e.g. Cumnor House, St Elphege’s, & Woodcote Primary) The fine weather ensured that all competitions, except the Plates, were completed on time. The Plate Finals will be played at the start of next summer. Trinity also defeated Whitgift in the Final of the U12 Bunbury Jubilee Cup. We wish them well as they make another attempt on the National U13 David English Cup in 2016. Whitgift will also have a second successive attempt at a National title having beaten KCS Wimbledon in the U14 Anderson Cup to qualify for the ESCA National U15 School Championship in 2016. In the Final at Trinity School, Whigift posted a score of 189-3, thanks to 70* from Jac Cleaver and 61 from Billy Sewell. At the end of a very hot day, Sanjay Patel (66) was the only KCS batman to make a significant contribution as his team were dismissed for 142. Whitgift also took the U13 Watcyn Evans Trophy by beating St George’s College in the Final. St George’s will no doubt feel that they should have done better as their opening bowlers had repeated their semi-final performance in taking 5 early wickets, but then allowed the batting side to recover. The U15 NatWest County Cup, having failed to complete in the previous 2 seasons, was won by a powerful Reed’s side against City of London Freemen’s School. Speaking personally, I still have reservations about the need for this competition, but it seems that schools want it as I have already had 3 enquiries about new entries for next year.

SURREY CRICKET FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REVIEW Director of Cricket Participation Paul Taylor looks back on a year of change and great achievement right across the county. 2017 has been another incredibly busy year for the Surrey Cricket Foundation (SCF). In February, the Cricket Participation team restructured giving promotions to four very deserving individuals. Vicki Howard, Gavin Reynolds, Mark Babb and Harry Ellis were all promoted to Cricket Participation Officers with Vicki and Gavin taking on the lead for women & girls cricket and disabilities cricket respectively. Mark took the lead on our vast school competitions programme whilst Harry led on all events held at The Kia Oval. More importantly this gave us more resources in terms of club support. With Kim Price and Chevy Green also being club facing, we now have six members of staff working directly with our clubs, with Simon Hards taking on a coordinating role within club development. They have been ably supported by our community coaches and our administration team and whilst there are always continual challenges for us in terms of priorities, we have enjoyed some incredible successes. Our School’s programme, supported by Chance to Shine, has seen the game introduced to over 23,500 children in 2017. Across the Street projects, we again excelled in terms of delivery and the number of attendees. An achievement that has been highlighted by Chance to Shine across the country. Schools Day this year was held at the Royal London one-day match between Surrey and Kent and we saw just under 5,000 children enjoy the experience at The Kia Oval.
